You're from St, Louis too? The shooting only happened a few blocks from where I go to school.

It's horrible and sad, and obviously not a remotely proper way to respond to the incident. It completely distracts and undermines the significance of the tragedy, and if anything, makes it look like the area needs stronger police enforcement.

But the incidents should really be kept separate. Let's face it, a bunch of assholes just really wanted to steal shit, regardless of the shooting. The riots were just a means for them to do what they would always have done given the chance.

Are you cool with this too? Rioting and looting becoming a widespread thing damaging more property in areas not related to the shooting? Innocent people being harmed? Or do you feel this is just more "getting back at evil corporations"?

Back in the 2011 London riots I lived in one of the areas affected. I would have fully supported an Army presence that was authorised to shoot the kneecaps off every looter they saw. Watching people descend into a howling mob of apes is sickening, almost as sickening as the oblivious middle-class Facebook liberals lining up to defend the looters' conduct.

Private property was broken into, homes were robbed, small businesses were bankrupted and historic buildings set alight. That isn't "sticking it to the man", that's acting like criminals and brainless thugs.

At least one third of the Vancouver Stanley Cup riot wasn't motivated by hockey at all. There were agitator groups to try and whip up a drunken mob (helped by the loss of the local team) and a bunch of people who were downtown saw an opportunity to just steal everything they could while the chaos was going on.

Any riot is going to have a percentage of looters accompanying it. Before order is reestablished by the authorities, a lot can get taken. It's just opportunistic assholes cashing in while they figure they won't get caught.

I'm actually kind of in agreement. The people who take advantage of these things to try and gain materially are harming innocent people for no reason beyond they have the chance to and their own personal greed.

That makes sense. I mean that's why we have the death penalty for mugging after all.

In quite a few states you can actually shoot someone mugging you, so.....yeah.

I think it's important to clarify the direction of the looting.

If my house was being looted, then there's No Way that that's ok. (My stuff, you Fu*kers! My personal property!)

But.

If there were to be rioting, in a society which celebrated wealth and ownership of expensive items, and advertised them in a time of recession where the individuals responsible for the economic downturn suffered no loss themselves, and instead looted the public coffers to bail themselves out, wouldn't looting be justified?

If I were to loot, wouldn't I have more stuff? Would that be ok?

Is that a bit Raskolnikov? Perhaps.

My previous statements are not intended as a incitement to riot or loot. Except in the instance of a Zombie apocalypse (obviously) in which case, we need all the guns, bullets, tinned food etc. (That's fair enough).
