I totally understand where your coming from but I do think furry PDA is worlds different than normal PDA. Both are rude, yes, but many would consider furry-related sexual/intimate acts as a fetish and we both know how most fetishes make people incredibly uncomfortable especially when witnessed in public. Another issue is that its not realistic to expect people to differentiate between two people dressed up as animals who love/like/etc. each other making out in public and two people dressed as animals making out with each other because their cosplay turns them on. The fetish aspect is what creeps people out, though I am sure I am just preaching to the choir here.
You are, of course, right. I would be totally uncomfortable if I was in a group of people who all had an affinity for a particularly niche fetish and all they did was talk about it, or worse, demonstrate it in front of me.

There are so many aspects to the fandom and it's a real shame that the most prominant is the sexual fetish part...

I have no issue with people partaking in a fanbase centered around bipedal animal people but I do get a bit irked when they're dressed as Fox and Falco dry humping each other at the hotel bar >.>
And therein lies the problem! When the world is exposed to behaviour like that as their only reference on furries... well, let's just say that some of us will not be crawling out of our prejudice-safe hidey holes any time soon!
I think you guys just have it far worse than most. Every fanbase has its embarrassing aspects/representatives. I'm a Mass Effect fan... nuff' said. D:

As long they don't shove it to my face (I choose if I want to look at it or not), I'm fine with them in general

Well, being one myself (depending on definition), I can't really say I'd dislike it. No, I'm not particularly deep into things, I can't see the appeal of fursuiting for example and would only wear one as a bankheist-disguise. And that's not even skirting the more... Interesting side of things.

And I do agree, there's plenty of... Less than reassuring characters in the deeper halls of Temple Vixia. But it's like that everywhere. While the weirdo to the slightly less weirdo is unusually high in that particular community, it still follows the same principle. Remember, there's always a CSI-episode featuring you somewhere. But in the furry business, the real nutters tend to absolutly overshadow the (relatively more) normal people minding their own business.
Hell, being an everyman in this particular group can often get rather ugly, as you sometimes end up pinned behind the angry internet-crusaders of Castle Chan (Where the just and pious knights where when all the other sexualisations of children's cartoons rolled in, I think we all know) and the afore-mentioned manchildwolves bursting out in well-rehersed drama over the whole thing. It's like being the janitor locked inside the asylum at times.

*Mumbling* Also, if I have to hear someone whine "fursecution" one more time...

Still. Furfag forever, I guess. *Flies the paw-print patterned flag*

It's probably like a lot of other fandoms or communities. Therefore, I assume it's largely a bunch of people who are enthusiastic about the thing they love, are generally friendly, and helpful to people who want to know more or at least want to know what's going on. However, in the middle of this are islands of snobs, jerks, enforcers of the ingroup, fan-evangelists(people who don't recommend but insist that you watch/use/play/pay attention to the fandom), and people who are way too easy to troll. Unfortunately, it's that second block that gets the attention and it's why the first block Can't Have Nice Things.

Closest I ever was to large groups of furries, online anyway, beats me how many I know irl, was years ago when I was in the Sonic fandom. I'm sure it's still the case now, but in the 90s the Sonic fandom was very welcoming to furries.

It creeps me out, but it doesn't affect me directly, so do whatever gets you off. I do find it mildly irritating when furries try to act as if they're some kind of oppressed minority, though. I've heard comparisons made to the civil rights movement, or to gay rights activism, and that's just absurd. If you want to stick your dick in Lola Bunny, though, then be my guest, just keep me out of it.

I see no problem with furries myself. My opinion is about as blank as if you were discussing canoeing or birdwatching, just a "I've never really done it myself, but if you're having fun then good for you." There's no reason why people can't or shouldn't admire 'furry' art, and I consider the suit-wearing thing to be the slightly hairier cousin of cosplaying. Even the sexual side that supposedly weirds most people out is really just something I rank as equal with most other fetishes, excluding particularly unique ones or ones that harm others (without consent).

Well, I am a furry so for the most part I like the fandom. :3 I'm not into the whole fursuiting thing and I think some furries have a bit of a victim complex; the fact that the term 'fursecution' exists is just silly. But yeah, other than that I like the art, webcomics, the porn, the role-playing aspects and a lot of the people/community (that I've met anyway, I'm sure there's plenty of assholes as is the case with any group) seem nice.

Each to their own. I wouldn't want them to mock me for my tastes so I wouldn't do it to them.
Unless of course they take it waaaay to far and want to have sex with animals or something, that's downright creepy and illegal. >_>

I'm not going to jump someone over what they like. To each his own, say I. Do whatever you like, and I'll be over here eating chips and not writing my papers.

I think it?s a perfectly harmless pastime, and it?s unfortunate that it has such a negative stigma due to just one insignificant sub-section of the fandom.
Unfortunately, that sub-section is both loud and flashy, and is therefor seen as the "default" furry in most people's minds.

I just plain don't get them. Having conventions and fandoms for anthropomorphic characters makes about as much sense to me as having conventions and fandoms for all the characters who wear skirts. It's a trait so secondary I just don't see the big deal.

Last time I checked, the word "furry" was an adjective, not a noun.

But times change, so I could be mistaken... *checks a dictionary* Nope, still not a noun.

I personally love anthropomorphic animals and their role in culture throughout the ages, but I kind of dislike the furry fandom AND people who hate the furry fandom. Why? Because it is an unofficial and unclear reference to a group of people that are linked to a style of art that has been around since the days of old Egypt, yet NOW everyone thinks it's some new fad filled with freaks trying to pervert everything.

Remember fables?
Remember Alice in Wonderland?
Remember Maus?
Remember Fritz The Cat?

Yeah, why not talk about Fritz The Cat, like a true hipster, drawing breasts on animals before it was cool. And there wasn't a single butthurt douchebag that was advocating it as "a furry masterpiece" or - alternatively - condemning it to be "the greatest furfag exploitation ever". No, it was seen as a gritty, unnecessarily explicit, yet unimaginably poignant satire on the mentality of the late sixties.

Those were the days...

Well, I'm a furry.

A lot of furries are really fucking creepy and need to learn what shit needs to be private.

Some are just pathetic drama-queens, insisting their cushy first-world-life is "awful" to anyone they meet for more than half a second.

I keep my furriness to myself and close groups.

It's not to say that I'm not messed up. I'm aware what I like isn't what a lot of people would like. I accept that, and do not force it upon people. However, that doesn't stop me liking it.

It's called a "Private Life", some people need to learn that, that's allowed to be a different thing.

It weirds me out a bit, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Just don't sexualise my childhood cartoons and we'll get along juuuuuuuust fine.
This is probably better aimed at the Rule 34 fandom.
They're the ones that set the standard for brain bleach warranted imagery.

I'm also of the "to each their own" opinion.

I've myself have come to read some webcomics that could be considered furry. I've noticed that many aren't above making fun of their own fandom and if they're mature enough to do that, then they can't be all that bad.

Ever since childhood (ie: in the land before the internet) I remember being really disappointed that there were no beast-races here on Earth with us...Where are the dog, cat, lizard and, bird people? I don't know much about the sea (nobody does) so I'm holding out hope that there are Mer-People somewhere but it really sucks that there aren't natural beast-people. Of course if there were, the term 'beast-people' would probably be on the same level of offensiveness as a certain N word.

When it comes to furries though, I prefer it when people are more like Inuyasha (ie: mostly human). I also love exotic skin tones, even if it means the entire epidermis is covered in a fine fur. I loves tails too...and have always wanted one. I don't really care for it sexually though (I have bondage for that)

When I think of the term Furry I think of Robin Williams.
Honestly though I do draw some anthro characters, as means to overcome my inability of drawing people properly. Then I found out it was a fetish, and I felt like a Tibetan with a swastika.

A few years back I hated Furries because they wouldn't shut the hell up about it and would insist on mentioning that they were Furries even in the most unrelated of topics (Kinda like last year's My Little Pony thing) but now that they don't bring it up constantly I don't particularly care what they do in their spare time.

I guess it isn't the demographic that I hate so much as the attention whores it seems to attract.

My opinion of this fandom is exactly the same as my opinions of every fandom that exists: Utterly Terrible.

Now, before you jump on me for that, I don't hate furries at all, and I'm fine with Fursuits, Fursonas and the like. It's the dark, unholy side of it (eg. yiff) that makes me want to look away in shame.

I have never come across any fandom that doesn't have it's idiots who take it too far.
