You know the stereotypes: kung fu, chopsticks, communists, jackie chan. But what do YOU GUYS think about China? You know, history, culture, politics, and things that interests you.

Oh yeah and fyi I'm Chinese, so your opinions are appreciated.

Delicious cheap food and even more cheap electronics.
Seriously you can find almost anything there if you look in the right place, mice, computers, headphones, phones -cough-, and so much more other shit you probably don't need but want anyway cause why not?

Never again. I was there for 6 months a few years ago.

I found that while there I could have a great time at any point...if I willed myself to. I had to ignore a whole lot which by the end of the 6 months I was simply unable to do any more, so I left.

That being said I'll still recommend a two-week sojourn to Beijing in the winter (and only the winter) as a holiday destination. It's pretty amazing to visit. I wouldn't live there again though (China, not just Beijing, I didn't live in Beijing).

I think "Who the fuck said that?"

I swear, when I catch the arsehole who keeps breaking into my flat and yelling out random country names I'm going to belt seven shades of shit out of them

Uh... Lu Bu?
Well, I'm hopefully going there for an expedition in 18 months, if I can raise the money. I love the history, and I'm looking forward to trying the food. My father tells me all sorts of stories about the food there- rats ribs, live fish, hundred year old eggs and more.

About 25% of my university. Going to the UK as an international student seems to be really popular - and Chinese students are probably the largest group.

I'm also thinking about the Chinese New Year, which I think was yesterday or the day before?

And even then, only if you don't have asthma... a week in Beijing without a face-mask is a free ticket for lung cancer... though I agree. Most places in China are great for a holiday, but I can't stand living there. Whenever I go to Hong Kong, once I'm there for more than a week or ten days, I have to either go to Australia or come back to the UK, because I'll be bitching about the humidity, bored out of my head because touristy stuff is kinda rubbish most of the time, and/or picking fights with taxi-drivers and scribbling 4's all over their licence plates.

Attractive women, the color red, awesome food, pushy salesmen, crowds, tea houses, pollution, noise, beautiful art, beautiful language, hideous street language, knotwork and wall hangings I don't understand, the smell of MSG, opulent restaurants, hole-in-the-wall restaurants that rival the quality of most places I've ever dined, friends who would bend over backwards for you, business partners who will rip you off in a second if you give them the chance, students who are brilliantly creative and a joy to work with, students who are utterly spoiled and unwilling to put any effort into their work who you have to watch like a hawk to keep from cheating on EVERYTHING.
With a pinch of salt, I agree with everything you've said... except the 'attractive women' bit... dunno why, can't find Chinese women attractive. If an East Asian woman looks as though she's Chinese (Vietnamese colleague at work comes to mind, she's cute as hell, pity she's married) but isn't Chinese, that's OK. *shrug*

OT: Hmmm...

Fascinating past; boring present; apprehensive future.

Is that what that is? Dammit it's been two years and I still smell that when I sneeze!

There are worse places for air quality than Beijing.

Zhengzhou, where I lived, had as-far-as-I-could-tell zero moisture in the air. I had a persistent cough for the entire time I was there. It 'miraculously' cleared up within days of returning home.

I think the Great Wall, and the statues that were found where Qin Shi Huangdi was buried. I don't know why I think that; I just do. :-/

I generally don't think too many nice things. I'm not really a fan of China.

#1: Pandas.

#2: How the Chinese government ban things that I consider to be quite strange. (e.g. skeletons in videogames, conveying time travel..)

#3: Tea!

#4: How I have yet to meet a Chinese person who isn't an exceptional gamer.

#5: Kanji, and how badly it terrifies me (particularly since I don't have an excellent grasp on hiragana yet).

#6: Beautiful music and architecture.
