Our wacky, abusive neighbors who keep trying to push fake communism on us from our doorstep. At least that's how I view the government.

I live in Hong Kong, so while it's a part of China it has an entirely different system. A lot of people here prefer to identify themselves as HongKongers rather than Chinese, and they like to stress the separation between them and the 'Mainland'.

The people in China are okay, but here there's a big stereotype that everyone across the border are rude, selfish bastards who keep coming across the border to hog hospital beds and empty shops of milk powder. Not entirely unfounded, as my own mother saw this Mainland couple letting their baby shit on the sidewalk just outside our apartment once, but I'm sure there are plenty of decent Mainlanders. Things work VERY differently in China, so it's not surprising a lot of them are oblivious to social norms here.

Noodles, martial arts, the ?one child policy?, the Great Wall, Communism, going to take over the world sometime in the future, really smart kids that are good at Maths.

Of course, those are all stereotypes from all the TV and film I?ve watched, and what I learned in GCSE Geography over two and a half years.

I am interested in visiting China (but not living there), as well as learning some of its languages. I?ve always been fascinated by both Chinese and Japanese history and culture (although my interest leads moreso on the Japanese side of things, because video games and manga/anime and craziness). Just not so much the politics part, at least until Communism came into effect. Because I?m not a fan of Communism in practice. It sounds like a good theory, until you realize that?s just not how humans work in society, and it's just a dictatorship in thin disguise.

Rice, poverty in rural areas, overpopulation and pollution in metropolitan areas, communism, human rights violation.

I don't know how pervasive any of these things are, and I realize that my first thoughts are likely the symptom of propaganda to some extent, but they're just things my mind associates with China.

I've never been to China, so for all I know it could be the most wonderful place in the world, but unfortunately, most of what I know about China is negative.

My views of Chinese people and their culture on the other hand is more positive.

What do I think of?

I really over-used these guys, I mean, three is usually enough to take out a fairly large chunk of an army, but thirty is just getting me warmed up in some saves.

Also chopsticks.

Democracy!

Yeah, I guess that's a weird one... First thing I thought when I saw the thread title though. I think my brain is being sarcastic today. Or that it did in fact think of the record Chinese Democracy... I've had a long day... OK?

Let's see:

1 - War. I've a weird feeling the US will be fighting China in my lifetime. (Can't wait. /sarcasm)
2 - Shaolin monks
3 - Lead-based products.

Yes, this all sounds racist, but meh.

When I played that game during Grade School age, I thought those things were real life weapons.
Alas, real life military forces cannot be that awesome. Then again, these tanks are freaking slow despite their firepower.

Honestly, the first thing that came to mind when you said China was the musical theme from Mulan. The second thing was pollution. The third thing was the Chinese Buffet not far from where I live. I'm suddenly hungry.

First thing that comes to mind is always the way that have a war that kills over a million people every century or so. Other than that, in no particular order:

The Taiping, the Opium War, the Nien-fe rebellion, the Boxer revolt, Sun Yat-Sen, the horrors of the revolution/WWII, Some awesome action movies, Confucianism, Mao, the great leap forward, a tendency to pirating other peoples ideas... Well thats all for now.

I think about how many people go over there to teach English. I hear about people doing this so much.

I guess I'm pretty literal-minded. I thought about the geographical location of China, then I pictured a map of it and its flag.

Street vendors selling all kinds of creatures on sticks, shady government practices, poor working standards, and an environmental disaster.

I've not got much experience dealing with any actual Chinese people though (other than the occasional tourist), so I don't really have an opinion to generalise them with yet.

Um... not a whole lot.

I love the food, the language sounds pretty and is on the list of what I wish to learn one day. And the women of Chinese descent tend to be pretty damn gorgeous.

That's it.
