Fallout New Vegas: It's the best of the 3D Fallouts. Anyone who's subjective opinion says other wise is objectively wrong.
What horrible cretins do you hang out with who don't agree New Vegas is the best modern Fallout game? Sure, the occasional troglodyte will say Fallout 3 was better, but I've never found that opinion to be widespread.

OP: Not a video game, but Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition. A lot of people give 4E a lot of shit, or so it would seem, but it's actually a hell of a lot better than 3.5 and 5E in a number of ways. I realize that saying it's better than 3.5 doesn't mean much, since 3/3.5 is arguably the worst edition every put out (which doesn't mean it's bad, just not the best). 4E's not perfect, but I don't really understand the hate.

I'm guessing (without looking up the numbers obviously) New Vegas sold quite a bit less than Fallout 3 or 4. I don't really think the "mainstream" is into actual RPGs, the ones that focus on actual role-playing. It's sorta why games like Divinity Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity had to be Kickstarted.

I only played a bit of DnD 4e but it has some serious problems if you play it straight without changing the rules mainly with regards to low damage outputs with high HP pools, it makes fights drag on so long. Low-level 4e was great and so much better than 3.5 but playing high-level 4e without house rules is pretty bad.

I've got to wonder what circles you've been hanging out in because the general consensus I've run across is that New Vegas is the best Fallout game since ever.

New Vegas sold about as well as Fallout 3, if the Wikipedia articles are to be believed. It wasn't revolutionary, though, like FO3 or Skyrim, so maybe that's why no one really talks much about it? FO3 was the first 3D Fallout game, which is a big deal because suddenly you can cash in on the FPS crowd. And, of course, Skyrim was the first Bethesda game that didn't look like shit. New Vegas still looks awful, even with mods, and it didn't really introduce any radical changes, save for actually being any good.

As for 4E, I can totally see that. I don't think I've ever been involved in a D&D campaign that's gotten beyond level 5 or 6 (various reasons, I swear I don't just TPK every group when I DM). I've been playing in 5E for about a year now, but I sometimes bring out the 4E handbook to homebrew old rules into 5E. The combat just felt so much better. I like 5E, but the combat is pretty fucking boring when you get down to it. Plus, the distinctions between the various mage classes are almost non-existent. Nobody ever uses 1st/2nd/etc. level spells except against bosses, in my experience. So there is literally no reason to play anything other than a warlock and get a ton of cantrips.

Genuinely fantastic campaign from 3 different perspectives. Pvp that captured the feeling of Aliens perfectly.
Yeah but the assassinations were SOOOOO slow. In fact, for the Alien, which relied heavily on stealth in the game to survive, it was almost a death sentence.

I'll go with Fallout 3 since everyone seems to ignore it nowadays and i'll also chuck in Fallout tactics aswell. Both games have stolen a hell of a lot of my time over the years and while i do like all the series i find these 2 to be the most underrated and least talked about.
Not sure I follow, since underrated would mean it was not successful. Given that it was Fallout's first romp in 3D, this was the make-or-break test in that area. Since the franchise has seen continuation, I would say the only way for it to be underrated is that if people who have given it a good amount attention were not giving it ridiculous amounts of attention.

I've likely written it before but Witchaven was pretty much hated:

I loved it. This scary blue face would just appear on the screen for no reason other than to scare you.

1995: I had a 120 hz Pentium Gen 1. I don't recall how much RAM but it likely was under 16 Meg of RAM. I think I had a 16 Meg of RAM video card. Worked well enough.

Really? People talk about FO:NV CONSTANTLY! It's brought up at random on one forum after another, far more than FO3.

While I agree that it is objectively better than FO3, due to the various factions and options for the endgame, I have to say that I just had a lot more FUN with FO3. It was my first FO, as well as one of my first video games, and I had so many epic moments playing it. That's why complaints about its nonsensical story just bounce off, since the plot wasn't really the point.

My underrated game has to always be 'Dragon's Dogma.' I've written this before on this board, but I have to repeat: I've never played a game with so many gaping flaws that I would still recommend so highly. The story is deeper and more metaphysical than the (to me at least) highly overpraised 'Bioshock Infinite,' not least because I actually cared about these characters, though I admit the story isn't terribly well told, and doesn't REALLY fall into place until the second, recommended play through. The game's various systems blend together to produce some of my most memorable gaming moments EVER! I'm so high on 'Dragon's Dogma' that I'm buying the game again on PS4 next week just to encourage a sequel.

Of ALL TIME? Space Invaders.

That was the game that started it all. Now look at it...languishing in obscurity. Forgotten by all you Millennials who never had to schelp uphill in the snow both ways to the arcade and shell out a quarter for one-and-a-half minutes of pure electronic bliss.

Where's my gritty Space Invaders reboot? Or the FPS version that puts me in the thick of all that gory Invader action? Or the RPG that reveals the Invaders' sinister motives?

Ah fuck...I forgot to take my meds again.

For about 5-10 minutes back in the day, when I briefly played the singleplayer in an Internet cafe.

So basically, no.

I'd like to, but it's pretty much impossible now, given that it's PC-exclusive (so second-hand copies are in short supply) and it isn't on sites like GoG. Not to mention that even if I downloaded it illegally, I'd likely have to go through the usual rigamarole of getting it to work on my PC.

Shouldn't be any rigamarole. LithTech Engine should run decent.
