I personally don't call people noobs because I think that it is a little childish, but I was just wondering what people who did think is a good definition of one and I think a gaming site is the best place to ask this question.

I am not looking for a dictionary definition.

I think a noob is anyone who's new to something. That's it. The end.

Also welcome to The Escapist......stay away from the basement.

I view it as someone who has played a game for quite a while but doesn't have knowledge of fundamental things in said game. Also it's a word that makes people angry very easily so it makes for good goading material.

2 kinds of noob,
The newbie: Innocently uninformed. Truly new to the game or genre. They want to learn to kick ass the way the other people do. Sadly, it won't happen as quickly as you want it to and may cost you a few wins. Don't rage at them. they are truly trying to compete with basically a lobby full of experienced people.

The n00b: Despicable gaming scum. Incorporates every cheap tactic to win and piss you off. It's almost as if 4chan itself infested your lobby for the sole purpose of sadistic trolling.

I've called myself a noob. I am careful not to call other people noobs, because they may take offense.

When I called myself a noob, I meant: A person new to a thing. No pejorative at all. We're all noobs at some point. When I first started playing World of Warcraft oh those many years ago, I was a noob. I asked people questions, learned the things I needed to learn...then I wasn't a noob anymore.

I know some people use it as an insult. But I don't.

A n00b is a person who is either inexperienced or lacks skill. I am a n00b at most shooters, for instance (though for some reason I've always been decent at the CoD games).

newbs are new to the game. noobs are jackasses that refuse to accept help and generally have a bad attitude.

Mostly this. There is an important distinction between the two. A newbie is just inexperienced, a noob is someone who uses cheap tactics or overpowered weapons as a substitute for skill.

This is the best way I've seen it put.

Then there's also the Call of Duty version of "noob" which you are accused of being if you do pretty much anything online.

I'm like you. When I recreated a character in this MMO I used to play, I set up a stall titled "n00blet pimpage!" My shop had all these really awesome low level equipment. A couple midgame players passing by saw it and laughed.

Whenever I have a question in a gaming forum, especially one that's for a game that I'm new to, I'll usually title the thread, "So...anyone want to help a noob?" I've found that if you're willing to admit it and show a genuine interest in learning, people will help you and not flame you for being stupid. Then again, there's always the bloke that buys the endgame MMO account and then asks how to play the game *facepalm.jpg* I refer to those people as scrubs.

It's the opposite of a veteran, and it's also generally what experienced players shout abusively at me when I get a lucky kill on them.

A newbie is someone lacking experience.

A n00b is someone who refuses to learn from experience.

an utterly meaningless word now a days that is used to denigrate people who don't play the game at as high of a proficiency than the person using the term.

I was supposedly gonna say "A noobb is you.", but that would be a mean welcome. Anyhow, a noob is a name some faggots call people who are just starting around so that they can grow their e-peen. :D

Noob is the original Sub-Zero.

OT: I define noob as "new or inexperienced" but some people use it as an insult. Generally the same people who use "gay" as an insult.
