Yeah, noob or newb or nub, nubcakes, newbie, etc.

All mean 'new to' (insert task hear). Each with a varying degree of belittlement. for instance the OP is a newbie to the escapist.

I think we can agree newbie is the least insulting version.

Honestly I dont see a problem with the term, if your new to something dont be afraid to call yourself that. It changes the people your playing with expectations. Its only a problem when you play with newbs that dont admit it and do stupid things while saying they are pro.

In Magicka I play with newbies everyday and try to teach them spell combos and tactics, not only so they are more useful in our current game, but so they might in turn teach someone else in the future and keep the gaming going.

Explains it pretty well.

Newb is short for newbie, implies that you're just new to something, no reason not to get along well with these types as long as they don't slip into-

Noobism. Being a noob is when you act like a fool and bring shame upon everyone else, these are the fellows who give groups a bad name.

1. Term that is often used to define a new player, or someone who is unacquainted to the concept of gaming or a particular game, this generally being an online social interaction.

2. A term of derogatory that is used to insult or harass a player in an interactive social environment. It's use either comes from spite or the uneasy feeling of directed hatred.

2 kinds of noob,
The newbie: Innocently uninformed. Truly new to the game or genre. They want to learn to kick ass the way the other people do. Sadly, it won't happen as quickly as you want it to and may cost you a few wins. Don't rage at them. they are truly trying to compete with basically a lobby full of experienced people.

The n00b: Despicable gaming scum. Incorporates every cheap tactic to win and piss you off. It's almost as if 4chan itself infested your lobby for the sole purpose of sadistic trolling.
This is the best way I've seen it put.

Then there's also the Call of Duty version of "noob" which you are accused of being if you do pretty much anything online.

Me. I'm terrible at most videogames but I still play them because it's fun. I don't call other people n00bs because I have had bad experiences with the term (I was playing League of Legends and using a new champion for the first time in intermediate players-vs.-bots. I was dying a lot, so someone had the nerve to tell me to quit. If I could have switched sides momentarily, I would have just to kill him.)

Noob is the original Sub-Zero.

OT: I define noob as "new or inexperienced" but some people use it as an insult. Generally the same people who use "gay" as an insult.
This also damn it you beat me to that joke.
I was actually beaten to that joke twice.

This ^^ but instead of it being 4chan, since even the people from 4chan know how to troll and play a game, they are just parthetic losers who can't admitt to not being good at something that isn't all that important to begin with.

A better explanation

You're gonna get quoted so many times for that definition.

+1 for possibly the most concise definitions of those two terms I've encountered.
