So this semester at college my group of friends and I always sit in the same area on our Wednesday lull doing test problems and just hanging out. On that same day behind us is this giant group of what I would call social misfits playing pokemon cards, talking obnoxiously loud about dungeons and dragons, and watching adventure time on the tv.

while today, a buddy of mine who can be very introverted suggested we go out later this week(rather than gaming at his place) for a change. and that his idea of going out is playing lazer tag, where 12 year-olds usually hold birthday parties.

what I ask you guys is what do you think is appropriate for someone to enjoy at their age? in addition to where they enjoy it and how much they indulge?

I think that as someone gets older than have to let go of some things, while limiting other hobbies one would call childish in moderation.

I mean I am a pretty big anime fan, and believe that the medium has a lot of depth to it and pulls of things western media never could, but i dont argue the fact that half of the time it is cartoon figures in fighting robots. and that it is subjective to what age group it is aimed at. I also wouldn't go about watching NGE with speakers at full blast in the school library or walk around cosplaying outside of a convention.

Capcha: do you shop at canadian tire? holy shit how does it know that!!

better question what do I think wouldn't be apropriate? and even then its motivations that are the big thing, like its pretty creepy if you enjoy MLP because you want to screw ponies

of coarse enjoying certain things is one thing...but somtimes you want somthing more "sophisticated"

I'm sorry, I am an adult and am allowed to enjoy whatever the fuck I want (within legal boundaries).

My father is in his mid 50s and this year, for Christmas, has decided he wants Lego. He is getting the shit out of some Lego and we are going to play with it all freaking day.

'Growing old is mandatory, growing up isn't'.

IF you want to be some bitter old fart, feel free use imaginary lines to decide what is and isn't 'appropriate'.

The rest of us are going to be the HAPPY and COOL old farts who play video games and call their grand kids 'noobs' on CoD56.

I have out grown actually playing with action figures, but that is about it.

I like doing lots of stuff considered "childish". I am already a freak so people don't usually care.

Out of curiosity what kind of things would you think someone needs to let go of?

Fuck yes! I haven't had Lego in years but that has me jonesing for a really epic build. Gonna go see if I still have the engine parts...

To quote XKCD, we are the adults now, we get to decide what that means.

This sounds about right, well put. There's no such thing as being "too old" to enjoy something, obviously you might want to keep childish habits on the sly in certain occasions like job interviews though.

I'm 30 and I still watch cartoons. As a matter of fact, I love cartoons. I'm hardly the example of a socially outgoing individual though. I also don't talk about what are considered unconventional likes for my age around other people either.

For me it's not so much what you like, as how obnoxious you are about what you like. If you're constantly talking about videogames and anime, like all the damn time, then I'd ask you to kindly shut up. Not that I actually would since I'm bad at confrontations...

Very much this! Also weirdly my father has also asked for Lego this year. He said he wants it to build around his train set. We are going to have so much damn fun with it!

I'm not that old, only 21, but goddamnitall I will enjoy what I please and I always will! :D

The problem is, the gap between "mature" and "for adults" is increasing.

Just slapping tits and blood onto a movie doesn't make it "mature", it makes it childishly immature, because it assumes that's what adults like.
At the same time, Pixar and such are creating engaging stories without any of these, and can be enjoyed by all ages.

Your father is awesome. I'm 22 and I still get Lego, and I plan on collecting it till the day I die.

If it's legal, then whatever the hell you like.

Although personally the only things that I like that the general population would think I am too old for are computer games and anime. Or rather, the fact that I prefer them to going out clubbing etc.

Key word there mate. What is enjoyable is entirely up to the person looking for enjoyment. Age or gender don't matter, people can do whatever they want. The way of thinking you are putting forward is outdated and obsolete.

And dude, laser tag is fun! Should people your age only be allowed to play paintball instead? Why? Because it costs more?

Whatever the hell I want as long as it isn't illegal.

I'm 20 years old but if I want to play video games, watch cartoons, read comics and collect action figures then I will.
