It is none other than the soul of Marcellus Wallace. The bandaid on the back of his neck is hiding the spot where they took it out.

I was just looking through the forums and saw a thread titled something along the lines of "what's in the briefcase". Expecting it to be about Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece- Pulp Fiction- I clicked the link. Instead, I was disappointed to find it was about Team Fortress 2.

So, I decided to start this thread for what I thought the other's intent was:

What do you think is in the briefcase Marcellus Wallace wants?

I would personally interpret its golden glow to represent immense wealth, to be gained regardless of the required means.
His phylactery, thats right, he is a lich.

The answer is shared with the "Who created god" question...

Some questions are better left as questions

Ha! That's what I was hoping for when I clicked on it.

Anywho...it's a 35 watt light bulb reflecting off a mirror.
Yup, just like the powder Uma Thurman sniffed was really suger.

But back in my fantasy world where things don't have to be literal I always say it's the disanbodied soul of Marselus Wallace (spelling error'd). The big ass bandaid on the back of his head was supposed to be some kind of clue or somethingand the code to the case was 666. Plus that was the popular response when I googled it a couple months ago

I had the exact same thoughts about that thread. I always thought it was really great that they never showed what was in the briefcase, because it really didn't matter what was in the briefcase. It was the effect that the briefcase had on the characters that was important.
EXACTLY
QT even said that he never intended to revel any sort of contents in the case

WARNING: the actual answer to the question, relayed to me from someone allegedly 'in the know', follows. You may not actually want to know this, as it is not in the film for a good reason. It may have the effect of wrecking the film a little for you, if you believe it. And I guess it may be completely wrong, I cannot vouch for the reliability of my source.

The briefcase contains Marsellus' soul. Hence the importance of the package to Marcellus and the white light, etc. This part of the plot was excised from the movie somewhere between the initial script drafts and the final print because it was considered a bit too "ghost-story-ish" and would be received poorly by audiences who wanted a more gritty, realistic film. Also, as previous poster has pointed out, it's not really necessary to know what it is. Not knowing also adds some mystique to the film.

You'll notice that Marcellus always has a band-aid on the back of his neck, this is related (i.e the audience is meant to imagine that perhaps his soul was extracted using some kind of witchcraft or other method that left a lesion on the back of the neck).

Sure, QT has said this isn't true, but then he wouldn't admit to it anyway, because admitting to it defeats the whole purpose of not putting an explanation in, in the first place.
