Prog.

Why?

Because Protest the Hero is apparently Prog.
I wasn't the only one who thought of this as an avatar. But mine has snow! >:D

OT: I can't decide. I love (almost) all of them! Death, Folk, Power, Thrash, Industrial, Black, Progressive, Doom, Symphonic, SO MUCH METAL!! I don't like anything "core" though.

Um... non-metalhead here... Exactly what is classed as "metal"? Does industrial count? If so, I'm going with that.
Depends what you mean by industrial. If you mean industrial like SPK and Throbbing Gristle, then no, that's not metal. If you mean industrial metal that gets called "industrial" like NIN, or Rammstein, or KMFDM, then yes, that's metal.

Am I on the right track here? I've heard :wumpscut: be compared to NIN...
What Maxwell said, but to elaborate on the :W: vs NIN comparison:

There are some similarities, but many differences. Wumpscut's written entirely with synthesizer modules, samplers and drum machines - only occasionally using guitars - and is marketed more towards DJ centric nightclub venues. Comparatively, Nine Inch Nails is written with "real" instruments like electric guitars, bass and rock drums peppered with interspersed electronics, intended for a live rock concert venue performance.

Aside from being "dark", they two are kinda ying yang in a lot of ways. As far as industrial metal or "coldwave" as it's sometimes called, you're looking at acts like: KMFDM, Ministry, Sister Machine Gun, Acumen Nation, Die Krupps, Cyanotic, Cubanate, Pigface, Revolting Cocks, Slick Idiot, Pitchshifter, Punish Yourself, Colbalt 60... etc (to name a few you might investigate if curious).

My favorite form of Metal is the Progressive Death variety. It's got all the brutality of Death metal with the breakdowns and cookie-monster vocals with immense technical skill, introspective lyrics, and sometimes complex musical arrangements.

Between the Buried and Me, After the Burial, Born of Osiris come to mind.

Currently, lots of Folk Metal. Folky folky folky metal. With Jonne Jarvela, the manliest man in manlidom.

Also some Zelda Metal.

I like bands from pretty much every sub-genre of metal, though like anything else, every genre has its mix of good and bad bands. So I wouldn't say any of them was the "best"

My personal favourites genre is thrash, with death and doom close behind.

Power metal and its various offshoots would be the one I'm least into, but even then there are bands that I like for various reasons (Rhapsody are hilarious, for example)
