I've said it before: Freelancer. L4D was hyped, we were thrilled about Co-op survival horror and it isn't underrated. It recieved good ratings.

I am honestly surprised that Left 4 Dead is on so many people's lists here. Seriously, Left 4 Dead is, by no means, underrated, and ESPECIALLY not under hyped. I heard faaaaaar too much about it before it even came out. Personally, I think Valve is overrated, myself.

I'm going to go ahead and say Bloody Roar: Primal Fury/Extreme. That's my personal favourite fighting game, Primal Fury actually is. I really think the Bloody Roar series as a whole is underrated in favour of more "popular" games like... Tekken. God forbid. Now I don't know if Bloody Roar: Primal Fury was under hyped... but I think it's definitely underrated.

Indie game Eschalon: Book I [http://basiliskgames.com/book1.html].

The description on the site sums it up: "An epic adventure that you must face alone...a single-player RPG carefully designed to feel like the great old school RPGs of the past such as Ultima, Might & Magic, and Wizardry". By the fans, for the fans. I'm so looking forward to Book II!

The Punisher (2005). That game rocks. It takes both Max Payne games, stops them into the ground, sets them on fire, chokes them, throws them into the piranha tank and then send their heads through a table saw.

And keep in mind that I like both of the MP games.

The only thing the Punisher game is lacking is Barracuda. Sigh. Maybe for the sequel?

They could call the next game just "Barracuda" and I'd rush out and buy it no matter what. Better yet:

Barracuda: That's a thing most people find out too late, knowhumsayin?

Kessen 2. I loved that game and nobody I know knows about it. All they think Koei did was Dynasty Warriors.

The ironic thing is everyone is saying Psychonauts. It wasn't hyped at release but now everyone knows about it and how "underrated" it was. Funny thing happened that it was so underrated that it has now become overrated because everyone talks about how underrated it was... if that makes sense.

I would say Siren? I own that game and I don't even play it that much but no one has ever even heard of it... I mean of course people here have but not regular humans.

I quite liked Vexx and Wrath Unleashed for the Xbox but very rarely meet anyone who knows what I'm on about unless I physically pin them down and make them play the games.

Im gonna say Left 4 Dead, cause from where im around, whenever my friends and I got to talk about upcoming games, i mentioned Left 4 Dead a lot and they haven't heard of it until a week before release. Also on forums like this one, never talked about it, or knew about it. It turned out to be one of the best games ever made.

so what game do you think was the most underrated and had no hype game
beyond good and evil
psychonauts
stalker clear sky
evil genius
tropico

none had hype but most are on my favorite games list

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: SoC and Cs, Fahrenheit, Odin Sphere.
I have to ask.. has anyone here finished Clear Sky? Have they patched it yet? I want to be able to finish it, rather than get 15 hours in and it just die on me...?
But a lot of them have become famous as hidden gems. Stupid gamespot and their "Best Game Nobody Played". Beyond Good and Evil, Psychonauts, and Planescape:Torment get trotted out every time a topic like this comes up. They're over-hyped for being underhyped.

As for an underhyped (yet not over-underhyped) game I'd second Stranger's Wrath. It was a neat twist on shooters, had fantastic weaponry, and (in best Oddworld tradition) managed to be at once stupendously goofy yet epic as hell.

Paradox's strategy games (the Europa universalis games, the Heart of iron games, Victoria Empire under the sun, Crusader kings)

Farenheit (I'm not sure if it was hyped or not though)

Red orchestra

Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines

The Close combat games (I don't think they were very hyped, but I could be wrong)

I could list so many of the games I own...
...but that would just make me like Yahtzee.

Underrated? Probably the Phoenix Wright series.
Underhyped? Championship Manager series.
Both? For the sake of writing something I'll say Lego Racers (the original, PC version). Because you can make a skeleton with blonde hair and a ponytail and cover his kart in parrots. And then win races.
Plus the final boss is very challenging.

Beyond Good and Evil gets my vote, I prefer it over Psychonauts. Both weren't exactly underrated, but définatly underappreciated and weren't hyped at all. I'm sooo happy that they're making a BGaE 2, although I'm skeptical of the free-running-ish trailer I've seen. There were no animal people! And that city looked too...real, too normal.

Doesn't make them less brilliant.

No More Heroes for sure.
Left 4 Dead? Everyone around here seems to know and love that game. It definitely had hype.
I thought No More Heroes was THE most Overrated game of all time. All the critics highly rated it it despite the fact that it was essentially the most boring minigame collection on the Wii; and that's saying something.

But yes I too thought L4D got plenty of hype.

Do you people even know the definitions here. Underrated means that the critics panned it despite it being a GOOD game. No Hype means that there's little advertising or media attention paid to the game.

As for my answer: Valkyria Chronicles got no hype but was rated fairly.
As for underrated, I really can't say: game critics are notorious for overrating games not the other way around.
