A game is bad if its made by Turbine. XD

I kid, I kid. What I've always hated is if a game's story gets in the way of the gameplay. Gameplay is the most important thing in every game, IMO. Therefore, the story and the gameplay should go hand in hand (see CoD 4) or there just shouldn't be a story at all. Mass Effect lost some points for it story, since it complimented a roller-coaster of a game with a few brick walls on the tracks. Half-Life, however, never leaves the view of Dr. Freeman and so the gameplay isn't damaged during story sections.

If you really like a game just for its story, then its kinda failed as a game. If you want a riveting story, just read a book. XD

Quest 64.
Horrible combat system, and a storyline to boot. I was young, foolish, and looking for a decent RPG.. GIVE ME BACK MY DAMN MONEY!
If this is any indication, I have massively different standards from the norm. I really liked that game (and still do).

The most important part of a game is the gameplay because lets face it, games are supposed to be fun. If your having hard time with the controls and find some things too repetitive or unbalanced then thats a poor quality game.

Another thing is how challenging a game is. If you can beat everything in the game on your first go then it will grow old fast.

If the game has terrible controls just to make it seem more challenging.

OR

If the storyline/ acting is absolutely terrible (Look at Wind Waker for a bad storyline in my opinion)

OR

If it is just so repetitive that it just becomes annoying after awhile (And trust me on that one I own the gamecube version of Crazy Taxi- Why?)

Now, to have a subway...

Quick Time Events (though sometimes a game is good enough in other areas that they can be tolerated: God of Wars, Shenmue)

Shallow Gameplay when the meat of the game blurrs together.

Tedious Minigames like mowing the lawn and pumping gas arbitrarily thrown in.

Programmer Laziness: sometimes you can tell that they didn't finish making the game.

In other words No More Heroes is a really bad game.

Things that make a game bad:

Having to rely on luck rather than skill to do well.
Shitty cameras, they just rob all the joy out of playing what otherwise could have been an excellent game.
Limited/no control configuration, because when will they fuc!#&* learn that what works for one person might not work for another.
Uninteresting combat/gameplay, I almost went with repetitive, but as long as the basics are fun, I don't mind doing them over and over, to an extent.
Story getting in the way of gameplay, because even if the story is resident evil pathetic, I can at least have fun PLAYING the game, but when the story is so important to the game, as well as awful (star ocean, I'm looking at you!) there is no avoiding it.

Bad physics EG. Kicking someone and they just fall down or fly 700 feet into the air. Unless it's the spartankick mod. That always wins.

For me it's less scientific as to what makes a bad game, I've enjoyed some pretty terribly rated games before, if the game does not engage me and make me want to come back and keep playing for any length of time, it's a bad game.

There are different levels of this too, for instance RA3, while I was playing the campaign, it was a decent game, but I don't really feel the draw to go back and play it again, turning it into just an OK/mediocre game to me.

But some things are tough to overlook, regardless of mindless fun. such as obvious bugs and imbalances, lack of any challenging content, no replayability, horrid voice acting, and a game that is simply put on the market to show off pretty new graphics technologies.

Framerate issues - No I don't mean in MP where it relies more on the connection but in SP games that can't run at a steady pace. If you are developing for a console then you better test it and make sure the hardware can run it since we have no way of upgrading the hardware to run it right. This should be basic but all to often they can't seem to get it right.

New characters - I enjoy getting a new character to play. One with new abilities and whatnot. What makes it go south is when you get a new character and then thrown right into a huge or difficult battle with no time to get used to him or her.

Patches - I can understand needing to patch a MP portion of a game. There is no way a dev can account for what millions of people will do together and what sorts of exploits they can find. For fucks sake there is no need for the SP portion of a game to need a patch. Don't set a release date til the game is ready. I am not giving you 60+ bucks to test your games for you.

A game can only be measured by how its parts work together.
No individual part of a game can be generalised as bad without the context of the games it has appeared in.

Controls have killed a game for me more than anything else. Repetition is the next thing. FEAR 2 bored me. Too much of the same stuff.
Any time a game is difficult because of bad design(Men in Black 2: Alien Escape) that's another thing that makes a bad game.

I can't believe I bought these games

star wars super bombad racers
Dog's life
Mystic heroes
Bionicle
Bionicle heroes
Army of two
Transformers (the new one)
Spyro a heroes tale

A bad game depends on its genre and its faults like transformers (the old one)was fun but had a stupidly high diffulculty curve but it worked but if you put that on a game like the red star where you dont get upgrades it ruins the game.

other examples like a useless story good: Seek and destroy. Bad: Bionicle heroes
A very complecated story Good:Final fantasy X. Bad: Metal Gear solid
Being a massive franchise Good:Rachet and clank Bad: Command & Conquer
Having repetitve Combat Good:Ring of Red Bad: Army of two

Ultimatly A bad Game Is one you cant relate to i.e A World of Warcraft fan Playing Gran Turismo
