What do you think makes a good game? A gripping storyline? Great Gameplay? A balanced game? An addictive game? A game with a great online community?

Tell me what you think

I like a little bit of an open world with exploration. I don't care for it being "too" linear
and I don't need to be held by the hand. Fun and with a community of support. Mods would be an added bonus.

As much as I love a good story, great graphics and deep and relatible characters, you really only need good gameplay.

Just look at Demon's Souls. It doesn't look that great, there is no character development and no story whatsoever and it's one of my favorite games of all time because its gameplay is some of the best around.

If it's fun. That's it. I need nothing more, graphics, sound, gameplay, plot, it's all irrelevant as long as I'm being entertained.

I take the same tack with films and other forms of media as well.
Gameplay, Plot, Sound and Graphics are what entertain you. If the game was devoid of all four you would be playing a static white field.... If it was devoid of ONE you would likely not be having fun either. No plot would mean just walking down a hallway shooting stock monsters. No sound would get to you after awhile. No Gameplay or graphics mean no game at all.

Back on topic...

When everything clicks really.

Take Killzone 2. With the exception of the last boss fight i wasn't to particularly fond of i feel its one of the best shooters i ever played. Why? It has simple, gimmick free gameplay. Its based on using guns to put bullets in enemies. It sets a nice atmosphere. The story is a flat "Go kill dem offworlders!" but for the most part the dialogue between the characters is believable. There is no silly quirk i have to master. Its just a fun run and gun supported by interesting locations and funny little quips between the characters on screen and some incredibly tense shoot outs where two or three bullets can mean your dead. Does the game have faults? Of course, but i am willing to forgive because i have so much fun.

This goes for most every game. I like simple yet challenging games. Kingdom hearts stuck out because it has a very basic gameplay, beat things to death with blunt instrument, yet on hard mode(at least in the first game) bosses are mind blowingly hard. Maleficent in Hollow bastion in her dragon form caused a number of thrown controllers in rage as she lit the ground on fire then proceeded to thwack me to death in three hits on my solitary space of non burnage while Goofy and Beast were already smoldering corpses. The game itself is simple but getting through the battles is incredibly difficult. In the end on hard mode even basic enemies could one two punch you to death.

Pretty much that. When all aspects of the game center around being fun. Not showing off some gimmick they used to sell the game.

Well, when I said those elements were irrelevant, I didn't mean they could be absent, I was more talking about how it doesn't matter what those individual elements consist of, as long as it comes together in a cohesive whole that entertains me.
Ahh alright then. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

While many things are important to me in deciding if something is good, the most important aspect to me is gameplay.

For me personally, motion controls,
A great story, an artistic or aesthetic element to the game that makes it unique (Okami, Eternal Darkness), a stunning soundtrack, and good controls.

Graphics mean very little to me.

I like all types of games, and it could be for any particular reason. A great setting can overcome mediocre gameplay. Perfectly balanced gameplay can overcome a bland script and storyline. An excellent storyline can overcome a cliche setting.

If a game has one gripping aspect for me, and none that truly break the game, then I'll probably really enjoy it.

Community and replayability.
Nobody wants something to get boring and I can't stand being alone.

Can't summarize. Total of 170 factors involved. Often people who like a game can't summarize every single reason it's fun.

Gameplay pure and simple. All the other factors are just icing on the cake.A game can have crap graphics and sound but as long as the gameplay is good then it's a good game imo_On the other hand a game can have the most beautiful graphics imaginable and the crispest clearest sound but if the gameplay's no good then it's a bad game and those other things become irrelevant.

You want me to single out the one thing in a videogame that makes it awesome for ME.

Jeese... why not ask me to rewrite the entire works of Shakespear without a infinited amount of monkeys, typewriters, and time to assist me...

If I really had to pick out what really makes video games for me is a great storyline. I love solid gameplay, well-written characters, beautiful enviroments and the like, but if there isn't any story, it's just not as a good as a video game with good gameplay, simple but strong characterisation, and decent graphics. (I remember Skies of Arcadia as a great example of a great game that has awesome story, decent gameplay, intresting and well written characters, and decent graphics (Excellent for it's timeframe.)

But even then, this doesn't apply to all games. I can't give that as a reason for why I like... say, Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer. It wouldn't make sense.

So I guess I would have to say it depends on just what kind of game we are talking about. If we are talking about an action orented game, then I would defently want exciting moments, intense combat sequences, and a great challenge.

But if we're talking RPGs, then I want beautful enviroments, suprises around every corner, plot twists that drive me crazy for hours, well written plotlies, suprisingly deep characterisation.

The game needs to be immersive & aaddictive and nearly nothing else, because if you get into a game and tim disappears and then when you stop you want to play again, surely this is a good game!
