I was born there, I go there every year or so. It's a nice place, lots of beautiful open country, food is mostly good, people generally don't take themselves too seriously. I always recommend my workmates to go see it for themselves, since I think they would generally get a good impression. Also, mostly a pretty safe place, crime is not very rampant, wildlife kills relatively few people compared to your universal car crashes and so forth. I always feel very relaxed being there. Problem is, it is just so damn far from everywhere, the plane ticket is double the price and you have to sit for twice as long. It's a great place, but it's not twice as good as visiting another place that is half as far.
Man, the government there has got an amazingly bad reputation now. I was in a small town in Canada and heard two guys talking about the renaming Morphine to "Med-X" in Fallout III and it was like they were talking about North Korea. The funny thing was that this was during Steven Harper's whole proroguing parliament bullshit and we were also only 10km from the American border, where they lock you up for having a few joints in your pocket. Honestly, governments are inherently frustrating, the Australian one is probably less restrictive than most others, certainly most countries I've been to and especially the one I live in now. They let you say what you want about them and show tits and swear on free to air TV, they don't tend to lock people up on poor evidence or beat suspects and they prove free healthcare and cheap university education with near-free loans. Of course they like to threaten to censor the Internet every few years, but they have made less steps towards doing that than most developed countries. By government standards they are alright I guess.
