A love letter to Rock and Heavy Metal with flawed, but enjoyable, game play. Introduced me to a lot of great bands I'd never heard of before. Sadly, most of the game's problems stem from legal issues taking up resources and time that could have gone into the game. You can tell the story was meant to be much longer. There was even going to be a whole other faction but that got cut.

I love it dearly, but it's pretty much broken with the RTS crap going on later on in the game.

It's a bit like Ass Creed after it got severely schizophrenic.

But it's got awesome and fun voice acting, some of my personal heroes and a metric shit ton of awesome music in it, so I find it really hard not to like it.

But, yeah, the game gets pretty raw, rough and random towards the end.

I enjoyed the hell out of parts of it, but the RTS stuff drove me nuts.

Also, and this is just my wild speculation, but it felt very unfinished in the story department.

It was set up PERFECTLY for the 3 act structure: Act 1, the hero arrives, explores the world, wins a fight against the baddie.
Act 2, girl goes bad, world gets deeper and darker, hero loses.
But then instead of act 3, it just sort of ends.

The really annoying part is that it was all set up for 3 acts in terms of the enemies as well.

You got the hair metal guy for fight 1 with his glam rockers, the girl is fight 2 with her death metal emo kids and it was all set up to have Tim Curry be the final fight in some kind of hellish wasteland with his satanic metal cultists.

I know if you go back to the original area, it's kind of like that, but it wasn't nearly enough. I wanted the blasted face of Mars. I wanted a massive towering demon skull fortress built into the side of a volcano.

And yeah, the fact that more than half the game was shallow RTS battles was pretty annoying.

But still, the voice acting alone makes the game worth it. Add on that kickass soundtrack, great hack-n-slash gameplay and fun characters and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Even more than that, I would agree it's one of the most important recent games simply because of how beautifully original it was. Like Bob said in the recent big picture, things like that need to be supported even if they're not all that great because otherwise we'll only get more sequels.

Loved the characters, loved the setting, loved the music, etc.

Except - just like most people here - I had a bone to pick with the actual gameplay. When it goes action/adventure, the game is pure awesome. When it starts with the RTS-elements... Things get kind of messy. It has some nice ideas, but in my opinion, it just doesn't come together.

Plus, and this might just be me, I have never noticed them marketing the game as an action/adventure/RTS title. Before its release, all I ever saw was the first part of it - right before you enter the "open world" - which is all hacking and slashing and summoning lightning with your guitar and dropping a Deuce. So, I don't know, screwy marketing?

I guess I was expecting more of a Devil May Cry/God of War kind of game, but infused with delicious Tim Schafer humor and galvanized with a thick layer of metal.

I was rather dissapointed. From the demo I expected a pretty cool open world hack n' slash themed around metal. Instead what I got was a game that someone crammed an RTS into. I felt the game was great, right up until the first RTS battle; then I just kept hoping the RTS element would go away.

I liked it, though it could have been better in a few aspects, like the Tower combat.

Good characters, interesting setting and story, pretty fun.

Kind of an odd spike in difficulty after the girl goes to the baddies. The army of Black Tears was tough as shit when I ran into them. They beat me twice.

If they made a sequel and just focused on ramping up Eddies own hack and slash and guitar magic combat it'd be great.

Also, the ending seemed...rushed? Like, I felt like I was just about to begin actually learning some really cool shit about the main bad guy and the girl and was expecting there to be more, but all that was there was a painfully easy final boss fight. I honestly thought that I'd hit a cutscene at one point where he'd become his "true form" or reveal he had just been toying with me and then fly the coop. Instead I lop his head off. Bing, bang, boom, the girl is saved, Eddie goes on his way as an epic nomad.

The main thing I like about it was how it stuck so closely to the theme of it basically being band warfare. Just all these little touches that make the world feel "real". The "Fans" are your resources, you gather them with Merch booths, and your base for each battle is essentially a stage. I really love the feeling of being in a actual world, and I think it capture that pretty well. The cast is pretty great to, with Ozzy and Lemmy Kilmister being fun little cameos, and Jack Black having one of his better, more bearable performances. Not to mention the sound track, which is an amazing anthology to rock and metal.

Also, one of my favorite main menus in any game ever.

Gameplay is kinda meh. But I am willing to let it go because I love the world that the game creates.

I thought it had the makings of an awesome hack and slash game but yeah they fucked it up big time with the RTS nonsense.

I loved the game at the time, and still do, but I sold it when I found that I was putting it in my xbox to listen to the sound track and crusing around enjoying the sites then actually playing it.

I am hoping it goes on sale during the steam summer sale though, give me an excuse to play it again.

Yeah I loved it, the setting was great, I loved the story and the voice acting was great but it really should have been a hack n slash only, the RTS stuff was horrible. Plus that soundtrack was amazing.

I really enjoyed the setting, visually, and in that it was interesting to explore. And the humour was pretty okay, Jack Black is at his best when he's doing rock/metal-based stuff rather than crap like Gulliver's Travels. He's still hardly great, but at least he seems to be enjoying himself.

The actual gameplay was pretty bad though, both in terms of the hack n slash stuff and the RTS stuff. Just awkward in general.

Worth a rental, I guess.

It's one of my favorite games of all time. I just loved the aesthetic and theme of the game. I had my share of outrage and "if only's" while playing it but it was just pure fun to me.

I did play it on easy because I do that regularly but more importantly, because I can't play rts games well so I knew I wasn't getting the experience they had at least tried to design.

Liked it up until the point where the strategy elements came in. I had to fight some giant spiders on some mountain and tuned out. Shame, as there was some great cutscenes and production values.

Controlling the game with a keyboard and a mouse is painful, but I like everything else.

Weren't the spiders long before the strategy elements came in?

Anyway, I liked the game quite a bit. Yes, even the RTS parts. But I will freely admit I'm a Schafer fanboy.

Should've stuck with the hack and slash and went the Zelda route and cut out the RTS parts entirely.

Absolutely loved the story, setting, characters, and the MUSIC.
Slough Feg, Brocas Helm, Manowar and Iced Earth. Tim Schaeffer must really know his stuff.

I thought it was absolutely fantastic. It's too bad Tim got completely carried away with the design, and he only had enough resources to make half the original game. Oh well, we all know he would never make that mistake again...
