What do you think of Christmas?

People knock how commercialized Christmas is, and they're right, it really is. But I don't think that people realize how important to the economy it is. Like it or not, it keeps the economy flowing. A bad 4th quarter can cause layoffs for lots of companies.

Also, if you think giving material things to other people defeats the purpose of Christmas, well, that's fine. But I love receiving gifts, and I rather enjoy giving gifts too. I don't really see anything wrong with picking out one time of the year to spend most of your money on other people for a change, with the small expectation that they spend a bit on you as well.

Also, hating Christmas is for hipsters.

Meh, Shopping is hard and boring, Dinner is the worst possible dinner, and snow is cold, on the other hand you get presents... so meh.

Aw man, there are some fucking depressed people here. It's family. It's fun.
Well, when you think about it, this site does have a fair amount of negativity: towards religion, life, self-esteem, and apparently towards Christmas. It's something I've learned to get used to, though, since it's the most civil place I've found on the internet.

I like Christmas. It's a wonderful time of year, and it gives me an excuse to watch this.

Boring to be frank, neither myself (Atheist) nor any of my family (probably Agnostic but I cant really tell) has any interest in the religious aspect so all it boils down to is the tried and true formula of driving four and a half hours to my grandparents so I can be assaulted by drunk uncles (figuratively of course) and be forced to grin and bear it as I open terrible gifts that often relate in no way to me or my interests. The only redeeming part is that my mum gets a holiday and gets to see her family.

I dont care much about holidays in general. Don't even celebrate my own birthday. If i honestly out of own choice want to give someone a gift, then i can do that any day. And if i want to be nice to someone, i can as well do that any day.

So, what besides of people needing a kick in the ass, and consumerism, is the point? I can think of one: The overall atmosphere all around you where you live... people decorating stuff, how they behave - that only happens when many people decide to do something. But on the other hand, seeing as how commercialized it has become, the modern xmas atmosphere is something i'd rather live without..... so that leaves... umm.... no reason to like xmas for me, but instead reasons to dislike it.

Hey, we have a connection! We must be pale brothers or somethin'! :D

OT: The holidays make me a little uncomfortable, but I generally just tune out.

I like it because it lets me get out of work for a few extra days. There is more to it than that but thats the basic gist.

Like buying presents for people and seeing their face when they open it (I never get them anything normal). Plus its a great excuse for a party :)

The only thing I hate is that my birthday and christmas day are too damn close. People always try and pull the 'hey we got you one present instead of two because your birthday is so close to christmas' the answer back is 'You wouldn't pull this shit if I were born in November'.

It starts WAY too early. I don't want to hear Christmas songs even on Christmas, but around Halloween is absurd! The store I work at plays it non-stop starting on Black Friday. We hear the same song in about 30 different versions in the span of 2 hours. I really don't know why we have to have so many different versions, each more annoying than the next. And sure, I enjoy getting presents and I do tend to take advantage of it, but honestly, I could deal with out it. Ever year I'm trying to get my mom to just not get me anything but she's too stubborn to listen and is one of those parents that shows affection with more material things than in other ways. I don't hate the holiday per say. I hate the music, and the movies/tv shows and how it starts so early. I actually do enjoy getting presents for people, though I rather just get presents at random because I want to, not because some holiday. As far as the "family time" I'm still living at home, sadly at my age, so I see family every day. Though my brothers have moved out and sister is away at school, I can honestly deal without seeing them because I've been around them so much. Especially my sister...the ***** punkass.

It makes me feel jolly, putting up decorations and looking at them and what have you.

The presents are good too.

Christmas for me starts when I've travelled back home to the greater family, and ends when I'm back at work. The "commercial" and "religious" Christmas go by completely unnoticed.

To that end, I like Christmas. I find it less stressful then my day to day life and it's a welcome time of year.

I do hate hearing about it just after Halloween though.

I like Christmas because it's one of the only holidays that's been used for so many things and changed from it's original form, that The Meaning of Christmas is basically that Christmas can mean whatever the hell you want it to mean

- whether that's religiously based on
*An ancient Pagan holiday
*The Advent/Birth of Christ (retconned into the Winter to gain Pagan converts)
*Worshiping Santa Claus

Or just-

*A time to exchange presents with Family and Friends in a very cheesy/sappy manor
*To get drunk
*A Shopping Holiday where you celebrate Capitalism (why not?)
*Any other day with no meaning to you whatsoever (you Scrooge)

My tradition with friends the last 3 years has been a week long celebration with the 3 G's
-Gather together
-Get Drunk
-Give gifts

It's a great day to be an NBA fan. I completely favor anything that combines a day off work and five basketball games shown sequentially for twelve and a half hours.

As for that whole religious holiday/orgy of materialism, that can go fuck itself. At least the convenience store's open so I can get a Mountain Dew and some chips for the aforementioned basketball love-in.

I love Christmas. This year was the first year I went to school on the Friday before Christmas Break (Grade 12). I really enjoyed it. Everyone seemed so happy, and I learned I actually like school when I can just talk to people and don't have to work (which, unfortunately, amounts to about 95% of school).

Other than that, I love the lights, they make even the blandest streets look nice. And the presents and family time are a plus too of course.

I just get a really good feeling when I'm driving down the street at dusk, listening to (good) Christmas songs, and driving by all the houses with Christmas lights up, all while it is lightly snowing.

Wow, now I seem like a sissy man, heh.
