What do you think of Fan Fiction?
Personally, I don't like it. At all. I would if some of it was actually good. The concept is a decent one that gives writers some leeway to focus on story and not setting, but good god, most of them suck.

Most are set in high schools, or have the characters in different universes, or even have some turned into, like, kittens.

The Squirrelking fan fiction epic known as Half Life: Full Life Consequences is one of the only good ones, and if My Immortal is a troll fic, it's probably one of the greatest. But other than that...just...ugh.

Listen to this first sentence from a fan fiction.

"One boring school remembered that he had won a vacation to the was going to invite mostly all of his the teacher was checking the math test Sonic through a note to Amy's note flue over Shadow and Rouge's heads,good thing it didn't his note hit Amy's head waking her form her day-dream."

Eh, it depends on whether or not it's any good. Most fanfiction writers are indeed buffoons who couldn't write a decent arc if their lives depended upon it, but from time to time you'll find an exception to the rule. Some fanfic writers are genuinely talented but uninterested in creating their own world (or unable to); some are budding authors just trying to get their footing; and, rarely, they're full-fledged and established authors who are too bored/strung out to write anything else. Most of it is crap, certainly, but some of it is legitimately entertaining.

I've written some fan fiction in my many experiments as a writer. I find its the better to take a more open universe (for me it would be the Elder Scrolls Universe) and create a story in a set up universe than to butcher the story/adventures of set characters.

Basically, my tip to writing fan fiction is to be a fan of something with a heavier emphasis on setting than on plot itself.

Most are crap, like Half Life: Full Life Consequences (which, admittedly, is somewhat brilliant in its crappiness). But some that I have read are very good. I wrote an arc to one about Bioshock when I was bored and I thought mine was pretty decent. I even fined tuned it so it was an emotional, interesting story. It really depends on who is writing it.

As with everything, Sturgeon's Law [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon%27s_Law#.E2.80.9CNinety_percent_of_everything_is_crud.E2.80.9D] applies. So yeah, the vast majority of it is rubbish. But not all of it is. I, for one, have written some myself on quite a few occasions. I think it's a brilliant way for an aspiring writer to get some practice and some of it really is good in its own right.

I usually avoid fan-fiction because of the high (100%) rate of disappointment. I admit some of it is just terrible enough to get a laugh out of, but it's usually not worth my time.

Plus, its FAN fiction. Probably some random asshole with a high school education and some writing classes creating an alternative ending to Harry Potter where he's the hero and everyone is a furry...
But that was just the worst case scenario...

While I agree that most fanfiction is pretty dam bad, I also know that I myself wandered though all of it for something I was interested in and out of a few hundred, found two particular authors whose stories where perfect and I'm still following their updates so I think it's fine to say most of it's bad but their are some really good writers out their who make it worth it for those who find them,

Like anything else in any artistic medium it comes down to execution on a case-by-case basis. I've read some that have brilliant characterization and tell an interesting story while working in the confines of the canon it's set in and I've seen others that can only be compared to word vomit, but then again that would be an insult to vomit. It all depends on who's writing it.

Any fanfiction that has even mention of a Sonic character makes me want to chase that fanfiction down and shoot it with a G36C while beating it with an axe.

Ironically, I was bored one day and decided to read a pokemon fanfic (Serebii) and, get this, its surprisingly well done. No it isn't about Ash and co. Its more of this own trainer someone made.

Ironically, I am in the process of writing a script of fanfiction, I plan to make it as well written as I can so I can turn it into the story line of a game I may make in the future. (Maybe)

For me, fanfiction is strictly practice.

Otherwise, if you're gonna write a story that you want other people to see, is it really such a leap to make something unique?

If you were to press me, I would allow fanfiction if it were maybe in the same universe with the same title, but with new characters, a new plot line, and preferably a new time period. Also preferably if the leads from the thing you're fanfictioning don't show up. Or, if at all, VERY briefly.
