Three Words, TOO! MUCH! YAOI!
Good GRAVY I'd call it insane with just how much of it there is, but so many fans tend to go beyond that! And don't even get me STARTED on the mental gymnastics the authors tend to jump through to "justify" their character butchery!

It's just so difficult trying to find good writing in such a giant heap of ****. Seriously, with about 19,000 fan fics written for one series, there are only about 7 that I actually read. People need to learn how to spell first of all, then they can go on to learn how to use grammar, and finally; they get to learn how to write a compelling story. Most authors just ignore all these things...
Healthy, until you get into completely sick and unnecessary details being proudly proclaimed to those who don't even understand who you're proclaiming about.
A vast majority of it is crap but on occasion I've stubled across some good ones written by people with real talent. I find it fun to write but I'd never put it up for people to read cuz I'd be way too embarrassed. As for the My Immortal one, that it a classic example of something being so bad that it's good. My boyfriend and I could not stop laughing whilst reading it.
Fanfiction is fine. What pisses me off is people who group the entire thing into the My Immortal category, and proceed to express only derision for my choice to pursue reading and writing it as a hobby. Those people suck.
Besides, it's all pg-13 on Fanfiction.Net, so if you know how to look properly (Search query: >10000 words is ESSENTIAL. You miss out on a lot of good drabbles and short stories, but it's a necessary sacrifice- If someone is willing to write more than 10000 words, it has probably recieved some legitimately good feedback), you'll get a good, more or less clean, story.

I was all prepared to impress you all with my knowledge of the two most humorous fanfics ever created: Half Life; Full Life Consequences, and My Immortal...and was promptly ninja'd by the OP.
OT: I don't know, the vast majority of fanfics are absolutely abhorrent, but I will say this. On occasion, you will find something fascinating. You will find, amongst a sea of fictions that are, arguable, absolutely horrific in their own right, a fanfiction so nauseatingly bad that it comes full circle to the point where it is actually perceived as amazing. These are, and forever will be, the only reason to even bother yourself with fanfictions, in my own opinion. For examples, see above.

The opporise side of the coin, however, is that which must not be named.
I myself have written one and a half fanfictions, and I found it quite fulfilling in its own way. I think we all do it in our heads, to some extent--whether we realize it or not. The only difference between fanfiction writers and everyone else is they actually make the effort to flesh their ideas out and write them down.
I also think it's a good way to hone creative writing skills. As a visual arts student, I know all too well the benefit that can come from using examples from the old masters, and at times downright copying their works in order to better understand them (and to provide inspiration to myself). I don't think fanfiction writing is too different from that. They're putting their own spins on characters and storylines. Sure, a lot of it is fluff and crap, but it's sure a lot more beneficial than Farmville in the long run.

I quite often read Fanfiction and soooo many are fantastic...all this bashing is pointless and its pissing me off quite frankly....I've read more than my fair share of great stories that take the characters I love from the usual gamit(movies, books,games, anime, TV shows) and weave well writen narratives, that have great action, drama, romance and even suspense. (thanks to cliff hangers and most coming on a chapter by chapter basis) I could link drop atleast 4 here right here and now that Im reading which are either still in progress or already finished that Im throughly enjoying just as much if not more than books in print that I paid money for...
I have yet to find a written fanfiction that was decent without being a parody. However, fan audio dramas and fan films can be quite good. For example, this series of Doctor Who audio dramas by Darker Projects, and this Indiana Jones audio drama by Pendant Productions. They're both pretty good, and the Indiana Jones one is a better sequel to The Last Crusade than Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was -- and this is coming from someone who liked the fourth Indy film.

The first one is that they were made well after the owners of the intellectual property in question seemed to be done with it for good, so that the fan productions were a love letter to the series by fans who had had decades to pour over the finished product. The other is that, rather than being the wish fulfillment of one person, they are a concerted effort by a group of people, all working towards a common goal, and each capable of checking the excesses of the others. It makes a huge difference in terms of quality.

I try to stay away from it, except for Half Life: Full Life Consequences. It's so bad it's awesome beyond all description.

Well theres a fine line between what people call fanfiction and something that gets included into canon.
That said, the majority of what I've read is pretty crappy. I really think that a lot of the writers of fanfiction could make good stories, but working within the constraints of someone else' work is really holding them back from being creative and making their own characters, instead of making existing characters seem awkward and unlike what we already know and like about them.
