What do you think of Gamestop's selection?

I have quite a few Gamestop stores where I'm from, and I really like them. They usually have the new, hip games and stuff, but they also have entire sections for PS2, DS, Gameboy Advnaced, etc. I really like it.

I don't know about you, but I love the staff at my Gamestop. They are usually very easy to talk to and are always in a good mood.

As a mainly PC gamer, Gamestop (EB Games) has repeatedly nudged me closer and closer to allowing Steam to take all my money. I used to really... really prefer having a hard copy of my games but the sheer lack of choice I've found in every store and the curiously high prices have caused me to walk away in disgust. The breaking point was last spring when I pre-ordered APB for the same price as Steam and the APB website was selling for. I was supposed to receive a key upon my pre-order which would gain me some exclusive content (some clothes and a nice car) AND allow me beta access. The clerk said he didn't know where they were and knowing how futile it is to get upset with the sales staff, I left it at that but continuously called them for the next two months which was a fruitless endeavor. Then, upon release, I went to pick up my game only to find out that Gamestop had jacked up the price another $15 dollars that I was expected to pay, higher than any other retailer or DDS. It was at this point I got a full refund (which I'm grateful the clerk gave to me without hassle) and begun my girlish love affair with Steam.

I'd say about 60 to 70 percent of my local gamestop's inventory consists of used games. Since I don't buy used games (or opened "new" games) I don't shop there. The large department stores nearby are more likely to have a game in new condition than my gamestop, and at a better price, too. They've also got tons of guides and third party peripherals. I don't know how that stuff can be profitable.

Kmart gets new release just as reliably as my gamestop does, and they have $20 credit deals. If I want an older game, Best Buy and Target have some pretty insane clearances every once in awhile. The rest is filled by amazon, where I earn points on my credit card. I can also get online codes there and use my discounts on those, too.

When I'm looking for a newer release like Mortal Kombat or Portal 2, Gamestop is usually my best bet. Not only that, but they have awesome preorder bonuses. If I'm looking for a game that has come out within the last 4 years, Gamestop is where I go first.
However, anything older than that, I go to Vintage Stock. They have an enormous selection of games for almost every console. From NES to Xbox 360/PS3/Wii, they usually have it. The only thing is that they don't sell PC games, but that's why I have steam.

The stores around here very rarely have anything I'm looking for and I think their prices are ridiculous. I normally walk into a GameStop and immediately walk back out after seeing how damn expensive a used game is.

So, in short, I think it sucks.

The one closest to me is actually pretty good, although if I want a DS game then I might be screwed. There's a few people that work there that will let me know when they have a used game that I want, and might help me out if I need it.

Also, they actually play games. I know I've lost like 10 mins just talking/bitching about some game that one of use happened to mention. I will say I won't trade games there, I don't like being ripped off.

I keep getting real mixed reviews about the trade-ins. Sometimes it seems great but other people are getting ripped off. I've always gotten pretty solid deals considering that I understand they still need to make a profit. What are some bad deals that you guys have gotten?

Never had a problem with them. I know they don't carry old games (that's fine, I know they aren't that kind of store), so I just go to another franchise store (or Amazon) for the old stuff.

I was in one about 3 days ago.
Half the store was preorders with huge empty boxes taking up the shelves. (which is a big no no if you know retail)
Some lady with her kid was buying DNF in front of me. She asked the clerk if it would be ok for the kid. Clerk says "sure"

They really dont have many older games. I just go in there hoping for something different to pop up lol.
My mom was with me (I'm 29 lol) and she wanted the alice game. I was showing her the preorder for MW3 and arkham city to get it for my step dad.

I have to say, I used to absolutely love how every time I wandered into my local Gamestop, they'd have almost any game I'd ever want...but lately...I've gone in there more and more only to be disappointed. And even on their website they don't have some of the games I'm looking for. What do you think? Do you usually rely on them or do you prefer to go to other sources? And for the record, this is probably the best Gamestop for quite a ways. If they don't have a game, they end up having to refer me to one over 20 miles away half the time.
well unless you're looking for some original Xbox games or REALLY old PS1 games then i don't see why you should be disappointed at all.

what are you looking for that's never available near you?

They always have a great selection with cheap prices. The customer service is fantastic as well. They almost always have the game I'm looking for, and if they don't I just go to Amazon.
I will admit the customer service at mine is about as good as it gets. I know every person there on a first name basis and they're always friendly and helpful. It just seems like lately they're having trouble getting a hold of a lot of games.
There's a couple of things that factor into this... every week we get RSBs and a lot of times send out a TON of product to other stores. We get other product in too, but it's random what we get. But, one thing that's nice, is we can always order games from other locations for you... whenever I'm looking for some RPGs I usually have to order them from other stores, and since I'm really picky I need the original case and stuff too, so if someone ever orders something for you you can ask for that too. What's nice is ordering stuff in the store means you don't have to pay shipping either :)

Most recently it was Valkyria Chronicles. Before that it was Okami-Den, Just Cause 2, and a few others a month or two back that I'm having trouble recalling. But I used to NEVER run into the problem at all. And seeing as I don't have credit card access right now, not even being able to buy it on their site is pretty disappointing.

Absolutly terrible, all they sell is the top 10 games.
Quick question why do you have to fill 3 shelves with the same game case? And also their pc selection has been getting worse and worse.
Last week, and this is no joke, all the local gamestop had in it's PC section was WoW + expansions, The Sims + expansions and football manager 2011.
Staff in every gamestop i've ever been in have been dicks too.
Man, the gamestops near you must be dead in that case. I can explain the three shelves with the same case thing, though. We get marketing kits from corporate and need to have them exactly how the book looks, otherwise we get in trouble. They want eye catching displays for the new and upcoming titles so people ask about them or just see them and buy them. It's marketing. Dunno what you mean about the top ten titles only though. We have two stores here and while one is really tiny they still have hundreds of varied titles.

Ah. Lack of access to a credit card IS really troublesome (especially when we're living in an era that wants to move towards digital distribution... thanks a lot Steam.) But you can easily get around it by buying a gamestop gift certificate and using it to buy games online (yes, you can do that). You'll end up paying a little more for shipping, but if it says "Add to Cart" on the website, you can buy it online with a Gamestop Gift certificate (or a powerup rewards card if you have store credit, and you can still get your 10% discount when you input your powerup rewards card information). Other than that, you can always purchase a Visa Gift Card and buy stuff online with that.

Like I said, they don't even have it on their site("Unavailable Online"), or else I'd have used my PowerUp card which has plenty of money on it. So I'd have to get a Visa gift card like you said to try and buy it from somewhere else. That is a solid idea though, so I can just give that a shot, thank you.

i have an ASTOUNDING selection at my local gamestop, and the people there know me by name as well, so no problems there. And if you're a PC gamer, just go to steam. if you REALLY want to buy PC games from Gamestop, buy a gamestop gift certificate and use it to buy stuff from the website. they have a website you can buy from you know...

if you're talking about PC games, then yeah, they don't have the greatest selection. They have a metric TON of games, but usually not PC ports, its mostly older or PC centric games
