Best thing to do every now and again. Better with a girl though.
Nice, man, nice.

In an MMO, fine. In most RPG's with shitty combat systems *cough*Dragon Age*cough*, it pisses me off. If the combat is awesome, I'll tolerate it.

in mmo's i think its stupid, if i WERE to pay monthly subscriptions, i better not be doing any stupid ass grinding, fuck that

but for games like jrpg's and stuff like that, i wont say it out loud but i kind of do like it, its an expected evil that comes with the game and over the years i've grown to really like it.

Grinding has gotten too overused to be fun at all. Wow alone has used grind more than enough to make up for it being over used in the entire games industry.

It's alright as long as the combat-mechanics are interesting. They usually aren't in grind'y games though.

If I have a clear goal in sight, and if it takes a short time, and if I only have to do it very rarely, then grinding is fine. Anything more then that and my attention span can't take it.

I don't really mind the grind because even if I have to waste 50 Murlocs to get their fins, I still get the XP from wasting 50 Murlocs.

Obviously there is the issue of maintaining challenge in the game, but its difficult to maintain a balance.

I'm pretty much a pure RPG only gamer and i find a sign of a good RPG is for it to be possible to complete but satisfyingly challenging without any grinding. So as long as you dont run away from any battles and have a decent strategy, you should be set to beat the game.

When it coms to superbosses i think, if you're confident in your ability to defeat it but dont want to because of the time it takes to grind, it would be wise not to put the time into it at all. You can do it, you dont have to prove it. Please remember this, but perhaps dont apply this outlook to other aspects of life!

As for MMORPGs. Certain aspects sicken me. I'm glad people enjoy it as a community but not I.

I don't count killing 6 of X to collect Y and give it to NPC Z as a grind. That's a quest, it's no different then a side quest. Grinding is when you go out and kill 5000 of X for no other reason then to grow levels. I can stand doing it for a little bit, but if I have to do it over and over then I have a problem. Sometimes you start to fall behind on levels in a game so you have to grind a bit, but if I have to do it every few missions, then the game is a bit broken.

No game should force you to grind at the cost of fun. Why should I grind boars for 13 days to get the drop that would make me king when I could be having just as much fun playing another game?

It's not something I enjoy, but it's a good time to zone out and chat with friends and the benefits can be good. Some of the most interesting conversations I've had while playing WoW happened while I was grinding.

If the combat is fun, it's even more fun to get something for doing it.

So I potentially like it.
i quit WoW because both of these didnt happen anymore when i went out to grind my face off.
Grinding was fun when i had like 12 quests to accomplish while doing so; and the occasional good loot and the money/quest reward made it more worthwhile than doing anything else.

In MMOs, grinding can go to hell. It's just some stupid artificil means of keeping you playing and gouging out more of your money in the process. This is I why I love Guild Wars and look forward to Guild Wars 2, because there hardly is any grind at all.

In RPGs, I don't mind it most of the time because MOST RPGs tend to have some special means of getting around the grind and allow you to get stronger and level up quicker through special strategies. I have never needed to grind much at all in a single player RPG because there is always a special trick in place to get around it. Only grind I ever have to put up with in them is stuff like skill grinding which can sometimes be tedious but it's never as bad as level grinding.

I've never had to grind in FF because I was always properly equipped, had the right strategy, and the right items with me to level me up fast.

I don't mind a little grinding if you get something good out of it, but it does get tedious after a while.
If the grinding is fun (god forbid) then I would try and do an hour or more.

I rather dislike grinding, especially when I'm playing a game and all I end up doing for quests is grinding. Weirdly enough, and get your helmets out, cause this is gonna get messy, but I liked Runescape like...a lot. And when I finally got over to WoW, I just didn't like it the same way. It seemed like I was only doing these grindy "kill this amount of that" quests, which caused me to lose interest. I don't think I really got any quests that were about anything other than killing a bunch of animals, or killing a bunch of animals to get past them so I could kill another animal. I thought Runescape (this being in foggy nostalgia-o-vision) had a nice balance of different quest styles, where for every one or two grindy quests there was one with some kind of puzzle solving element or the like. Maybe I just didn't give WoW enough of a chance, but I lost interest fairly quickly.
