I find it hard to relate too, nothing in the lyrics speaks to me.

Pretty much this. I'm sure there's some good stuff in the genre, but I don't have the inclination to sift through all the crap to get to it. Too much "bustin' cops," and "bangin' ho's" for my taste.Zhukov said:

I like non-rap rap, for lack of a better term. I have three songs in my library that would count as rap. Sort of. The one that most people would know is Weird Al's White and Nerdy. Which is pretty standard rap, but without all the distasteful themes that usually accompany it.
The second is Décollage from Alizée.
It is far from my favorite song from her. Not even my favorite song on that album. But it isn't completely horrible. Being ten years removed from any French classes, I don't understand half of what she's saying anymore, so that helps.
The last song, well, it used to be rap, but the version I have most clearly is not.
I can't stand the normal version of the song (see also: whatever the name of the song was that was parodied for White and Nerdy), but this is such a wonderful deconstruction of the attitude around the song that I can't help but laugh at it. Which is at least a positive reaction to rap.

I just find it boring. And for the most part a little too grandiose. I just think most rap tries to be big and fails hard.
Honestly...I love most Underground Rap/Hip Hop. The only stuff I haven't liked is the "I'm a ruthless gangsta who'll kill you" artists; who don't rap about anything else. Ever.
So, I've bought all of Immortal Technique's and Vinnie Pazienza's discographies...which is something like 6 albums each.

I don't like modern rap. But I think there was rap in the 80's and 90's that was actually quality music, particularly lyrically. Then you also occasionally stumble across folks such as Beck or Gorillaz that do rap and it's fun and harmless.
The last rap song I heard had a part where the singer wanted to cut off a woman's head then rape her. Eh...I know there are good rap songs but the bad ones are just so common that I don't want to even search for the good.

OT: Don't think of it too much. If I like a song, I like it because it moves me; the genre doesn't matter.
EDIT: One question for anyone regarding rap music:
There is the occasional rap song I can tolerate and i'm sure there are some good ones out there, but it doesn't appeal to me, I prefer rock, I don't mind heavy metal, instrumentals and jazz, SOME pop music. I take music on a song by song (or artist) basis, rather than listening exclusively to or dismissing an entire genre
I can mostly say the same for Metal and it's Emo, fuck the world messages. And Country songs that pretty much go on about nothing. Every genre has tons of shit in it along with the good stuff. You Don't particularly like rap. Fine. But calling the whole medium mostly drivel just shows a high level of ignorance and bias I only see in the older generations.ThreeName said:

I think just like every genre Rap can be really good and can make you think, but I don't really seek to listen to it, nor delve into any Rap that isn't played on the radio.
I've learnt to appreciate it more in the Pop universe, it has essentially fit into the whole Pop thing. Although even that can go sour for various reasons, such as T-Pain's "5 o'clock"... /shudders.

Usually, no I don't like it. Because 90% of the stuff I hear on the radio here seems incredibly generic to me. I really don't care or wonna hear about the next guy or woman rapping about troubles with the other sex and drugs to the same repetitive beats.
However, I know there's some good rap out there, I sometimes come across a piece that I like, usually when the text is set to a relatable or original situation and the beat is catchy. Can't specifically say I go out to look for it because of the overbearing volume of crap that I hear.
I usually like rap more when it's placed inside a total performance with melodic music as well.
