I think realism(you know, realistic war shooter crap)is a bit boring. It seems to have nothing new. What would you rather have, a MP4 carbine, or a upgraded gravity gun? Realism somewhat drains it of imagination, but kids at my school were really annoying saying that MW2 WAS THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME DUE TO IT BEING REALISTIC. WTF! Do you guys think realism is overused now?

I don't mind realism in games. Hell the reason why I love CoD 4 is because it's realism was actually quite refreshing for me. I've been playing too many fictional games and when I played CoD 4 I was blow away on how 'different' it was.

Its kind of hard for me to explain but I think realism can be just as fun/entertaining as fiction.

Realism can be fun, however someone must inform the game makers that I live in the real world and there are more colors than grey, brown and black. Plus if the game can give me a good story that explains why I can use a gun that shoots unicorns I will have no issues shooting people with unicorns.

I do agree that when you stick with the realism tag you lose many options that can make a game fun. No gravity, portal guns, setting your game in the future or even a different world do not have to be sacrificed for realism. There must be a way to make a good mix.

Now I want a Unicorn gun.

MW2 is anything but realistic. I like the game but bloody hell, at least give the guns some sway and freakin' recoil.

You need to distinguish between real and realistic. Real is what you would see in the world outside. Realistic is something that doen't necesarily exists or ever will, but if it would exist that is how it would be. So am I interested in games that portray something real? Sometimes its easier to connect to something that is similar to you and it helps, while sometimes it is quite boring. On the subject of realism however - that is always welcome because it makes the illusion that much more believable. Gunblades and fighting with giant keys just doesn't make much sense to me?

CoD 4 was great, but realism is a bit overused now.

Realism is an aesthetic choice. I've played some realistic games that I really enjoyed, but I've also really enjoyed some non-realistic games. It's not what you have, it's what you do with it. I would like to see some more games that are non-realistic and uber-stylized though.

I think that no matter what, a game will not be realistic. You can respawn irl, you only have one life. I think that the term realism is in many cases overused. I do however, think that in many games it is important.
If one wants to promote video games as art, you need to be able to reflect real life (not every game has to, some games can be abstract). By showing real life, the game can move people in a different way than a abstract one. So i think that it is important to reflect and suggest realism in many games and using the umbrella term "realistic" to describe games that attempt that is appropriate even if it may seem "overused."

I'm bored of it, but it could be fun if everything wasn't dark. I like to be able to see what I'm shooting.

I agree. While it was great at first its now just becoming stale.

The only thing that I seem to think when realism is brought up is getting shot twice and dying.
Maybe some people find that fun, but it just makes me long to be playing as a TF2 Heavy again.

I know, the first time I switched from Halo to play MW2, I got my ass kicked in single player. I was annoyed that your health was so PATHETIC. I like being a tank-like badass such as Master Chief.

COD4, realism... really?

What do we mean by realism though? I assume we're talking "true to life" i.e. taking 1 bullet means incapacitation or death, you can only carry 2 or 3 guns and a limited amount of ammo, guns are accurately modelled on real life counterparts, ballistics are accurate and weapon fire/handling/reload is accurate to life... Americas army style or something like that.

Well personally I think that there is enough room in the world of gaming for all permutations and combinations. Realism? sure why not? the down side is that it tends to attract elites and the game (online) can quickly become inaccessible to new players.

on the other hand if we're talking about games that look realistic like farcry 2 for example then I think for many games realistic looks are essential. your suspension of disbelief can be greatly aided by the game's visual concordance with life simply because you have less that you have to get used to or accept, and so there is less of a barrier between you and the game.

I don't mind realism, but it's when the only colors in the game are brown, black, and grey is when I get a bit disappointed.

Usually in those games, I have to turn the brightness up, so at least I get to see some brightness instead of dark, depressing grey all the time.
