Getting caught with pot makes you a criminal because it is illegal, that is pretty straight forward.

What makes you think that marijuana should be held to a different standard.
The fact that it is not a deadly drug, is not addictive and is rarely ever linked to the common harm of anyone. I smoke pot almost every day. I've never robbed anybody or beaten anybody, never raped anybody, murdered anybody, I don't carry weapons, I don't pick fights, I don't threaten people. I am, aside from my possession and usage of marijuana, a fairly law-abiding citizen. In essence, I do not harm anyone or violate anyone else's rights. So why should I be considered a criminal for owning and smoking a plant?

In other words, the real question is *why* it's illegal in the first place. CaptainEgypt seemed to be saying that the only real danger in pot is getting caught with it. Laws are supposed to protect us from harm (with the words 'protect' 'us' and 'harm' obviously up for debate). If the only harm in an activity is running afoul of the laws against it, those are laws are obviously unjustified.
This. This. This. If you didn't understand it the first time you read it, read it again. This Cheeze guy is right and you can try to argue with him but it's really just a waste of time.

1. You should be considered a criminal for owning and smoking an illegal plant.

2. Cheeze didn't say anything really worth arguing.

So... So he's been banned because he was smoking pot? What, while swimming?
Forgive the obvious joke, but wouldn't it be more fair to give him even more medals for winning?

But, see, you haven't refuted anything I said. Alcohol causes more violence, injuries, and fatal car accidents than marijuana is even capable of causing and it's legal. Keeping marijuana illegal is just as unrealistic and wasteful as the prohibition of alcohol had been back in the day.

Or are you of the opinion that legality is always a firm measure of what is actually right and wrong? I don't see how you could be. It's ridiculous to say that something is okay or not okay based solely on whether or not it is illegal.

Hmmmm. I agree, doing illegal things does make you a criminal. It's hard to argue with that logic.

In a society, yes laws would state what is right and wrong. In terms of everyone for themselves than no, right and wrong would just be subjective.

I think you are either f*cking naive or willfully ignorant if you think the law determines what is right and what is wrong. If you are the latter, than you're just another disgusting polyp on the body of the human race. Either way you need to open your f*cking eyes, open your mind and start f*cking thinking.

Medication infected with the AIDS virus was deliberately and knowingly exported from the USA to France and Africa and has ruined the lives of THOUSANDS of haemophiliacs. This action was totally 100% legal and was approved by the FDA.

Seroxat is an antidepressant (or SSRI) that was developed by Glaxo-Smith-Klein for children and teenagers in the 1980's that is very similar to Prozac but cheaper to manufacture. GSK's own laboratory and human volunteer tests reported that the control group given a placebo had a more positive reaction than the group taking Seroxat and in many cases the Seroxat group reported suicidal thoughts and feelings. GSK's marketing dept decided to ignore this and instead published a complete success report. Right now Seroxat earns approx $2Billion a year. NOBODY KNOWS JUST HOW MANY TEENAGERS, ADULTS AND F*CKING CHILDREN HAVE KILLED THEMSELVES OR OTHERS BECAUSE OF A LEGAL DRUG.

Law clearly has nothing to do with whats right and whats wrong and IMHO Phelps will be back for the London Olympics, because the good ol' USA will want more medals.

Why would he not have been suspended.

He broke a law, regardless of how unjustified the law is.
They cant simply say "Ohh yea, you got caught with drugs, but your famous so laws dont apply to you"

He got what was coming to him for being dumb, he even let a picture get taken of him.

1. The first part was childish, but it was amusing to read.

2. So either someone lied to get its approval, or noone cared. Not much to do about it now.

3. I hear that story with every antidepressant, I really don't see any reason to care about someone companys greed. If noone knows, than why should someone care?

4. Sure it doesn't, because nothing is right or wrong we should just do whatever we please, like kill people. Come on, it would be fun.

To Cheese:
Yes I should be considered a criminal for helping a slave if doing so is illegal, now whether I would care about being labeled a criminal is a whole other thing.

Fact of the matter is, he represents our country in his chosen sport, and he should therefore be held to a higher standard. It's what he signed up for. I think it's all blown out of proportion by the media, however, and he should not be demonized, nor made to look like a bad role model. It's not a mistake he made, just a choice, and he's in hot water because of it.
