I use it as an insult like asshole or prick. I tend to use the profanities mentioned more often though. Maybe it feels wrong since it has a homophobic undertone.

anly time i've ever heard the term "******" used was by my friend to make fun of his gy brother. He didnt use it s an insult on his sexulity, more just poking fun at him in a sibling way. same way as i mock my brother if he plays as a female or non-human character in an RPG, im not insulting females or Khajit by calling him a cross dressing furry, im just making fun of my brother for the sake of it.

Honestly I have a problem with it. I consider it to be a gay slur, the fact that it's most often said by immature 13 year olds online certainly doesn't help matters.

So, yeah when used in the context of an insult I consider it a homophobic slur. At the very least I don't say it myself.

As a ****** myself, I have to say that I take absolutely no offence to the word. But thats kinda just me I don't really get offended by anything.

I don't see it as much of a gay slur because its actually rarely used in that context and that meaning has almost dropped out of it.

If anything I attribute the word "******" to the extremely camp effeminate drama queen type gay people which is, unfortunately, the stereotype for gay people. So I feel as a "normal" gay person that the word really doesn't apply to me.

On a different forum, I recently read an interesting opinion. It said "Don't make fun of gay people for being gay. Just make fun of the flamboyant effeminate ones who dress funny and act like women. You don't choose to be gay but you do choose what you wear and how you act."

Make of that what you will.

I didn't even know what it meant until a few months ago, I always thought it was like dickhead or idiot or moron. It was the same when I learnt what bastard meant and even when it was explained to me I didn't see how "being born before your parents were married" was a bad thing.
We're taught that these bad words offend people but we aren't taught who or how. I blame the education system. :p

It's a nice way to point out the prepubescent kids in an online group, because that's where your mentality needs to be to willingly use any variety of fag or ****** as an insult.

It means absolutely nothing to me. It is one of those words that are used so much these days, that whatever 'deep' meaning it once had has been long, long lost.

It's a homophoic slur which causes me to instantly lose respect for the person using it.

There's no debate, really. If you want to act like an idiot with your friends, there's plenty of other words you can use to mock-insult each other.

Mmmmm I could use some ****** meat in me right now. So Juicy!

OT: Context is all and I think people should be smart enough to figure out what context a person is using it in. As Louis C. K. put it "I never called anyone a ****** because they were gay. I called them faggots because well... They were acting like faggots." I still call my friends and other things that I find stupid, or obnoxious etcetera gay, but I'm not talking about homosexuality. However that's just me I could be wrong.

I think that ****** got taken back by South Park. After you repeat something so often it just loses it's meaning.

I typically go by the rule of "if you have to use profanity, slurs, etc., then you probably don't have anything worthwhile to say" and that usually keeps me in the green.
Ad Hominem much?

****** is indeed boring, though.

Like the n-word, you're only allowed to use it if you are one. Otherwise, you're an asshole.
Double standards much? If I say "cracker" out loud I look like a moron.

There's a South Park episode the plot of which evoles around pretty much exactly the OP's question:

http://southpark.wikia.com/wiki/The_F_Word

It sums up very nicely how a lot of people don't even know the meaning of the slur anymore. I myself try to avoid using the kind of language I know could be hurtful; I know a couple of gay people, and while I'm not sure if they'd take it in a humorous way, I just wouldn't walk up to them and go "'sup, fags".

On the other hand, I'm not offended if it's used in a comedic context. British television in particular seems to love this... Just thinking of Father Ted and his smoking habit...

Sorry to offend the Supreme Ruler of Local Multiplayer, we didn't mean to be idiots for the last 20 years.

I was going to post a rant but I seriously don't have the time to continue pointing out how ridiculous your superiority complex. I honestly think that you might have not noticed how you worded that post, but come on... it was blatantly obvious that your wording was bound to make people want to call you that word we are talking about.

Never used the word before, and I've never seen a reason to. I just associate it more with 12 year old kids on CoD more than anything, so that gives me a reason not to use it. I'm also British, I don't know if it's more common in America, but nobody really uses the word as an insult, apart from aforementioned 12 year old children.

Question time.
If I started calling things I didn't like black, or any other racial slur regardless of their colour, people would cry "RACIST!". If I replied, "No, I just mean bad!", would you guys take that as an excuse?
Apart from the silly analogy that is completely broken, how does saying a word that has been repeated Ad Infinitum for the last two decades to the point people can't get to a consensus compare to being a racist?

Also, people who cry "RACIST!" are just massive idiots. It seems like today you can't even make a mistake with your wording, otherwise you will be instantly considered someone who defends slavery and discrimination. Some words, when in a sequence (like saying "I hate black people") still have their meaning. Perhaps if everyone said "I hate black people" all the time, it would end up losing it meaning after 20 years or so. But right now, it still means you hate black people. How does saying "******" strictly imply that you, for some reason, hate gay people and want them dead or whatever?

I'm sick of this HURR DURR POLITICALLY CORRECT bullshit in today's society, specially when I can't say "******" because it's a hateful word, but when a black person says it then it all "no, man - I am black and I am taking that word back".

So if I am white, I must be instantly regarded as a slave owner by saying a word? Because of the color of my skin? Because of my past? ISN'T THAT RACIST? ISN'T THAT PREJUDICE?

I find it's one of the most boring homophobic insults around. It's got none of the imagery of other, more literal terms, so it's much less amusing. Most of the time I hear people talking about fags it's cigarettes though.
