He was trying to wind you up, and it also looks like he succeeded, as far as you going off to us to show us all the mean, stupid things he said.

As for what he was saying about gamers - about it being a low brow hobby for over-21 unemployed bachelors. As much as I'd like to tell him he's wrong, I'm an over-21 unemployed bachelor who plays games. My girlfriend is always telling me as much, so it strikes me that if I was going to take home anything from what this whole conversation, it would be that it wouldn't hurt for me to follow his advice and play games a little bit less.

People need to start learning other terms besides "troll" to fling around.

There are other, more appropriate terms for certain people. "Sociopath" would apply here. Some people take certain pride in being called a troll. But if you tell them they're being a sociopath, you have the potential to trigger an introspective, paradigm-shifting meltdown. Likely not though, depends on how long they've been a sociopath.

It sounds like you got severely trolled and went all the way to another forum to make a post about it.
You never really win when you're trolling, but you can cause other people to lose.

Clearly a troll and one the OP somehow got upset about enough to post a thread on a different forum about?
It's not about him. Troll or not, I still fear that many people actually do have this opinion about games. Same goes for racism, homophobia, misogyny and other types of bigotry. I am sorry for wasting our time.
It seem intellectually dishonest to compare racism and homophobia to people not liking gamers or gaming.

It's also just someone's opinion, they're entitled to have it just as much as most people here are entitled to enjoy gaming in whatever quantity or manner they desire.

I like it when people get on internet forums to tell me how I waste time in front of screens.

I enjoy this guy's attitude. He makes a point then dives into random tangents of personal, baseless attacks, all whilst claiming live and let live.

Just when I'd thought I'd run out of new euphomisms....

OT, we're kind of the first generation to not have been forced to put away our toys when puberty came up and forced into the standard social conventions or dating, marrage, and being social. I have encountered more polite versions of this attitude from family as they were concerned I wanted to stay home with a book instead of going with my cousin to the bar. Didnt' bother me then, and it doesn't now. If anything, barring intentional torlling, this kind of sttitude comes off very much like we invalidate him and hiis existance focused on getting laid by proving that we can have other purposes and other enjoyments in life.
The most ironic part about it is that "crushing vag" is actually more pointless than video games if you're using contraception. It accomplishes exactly nothing. It's masturbation. At least I learn something when I'm playing a game. My brain is working. People like him are content to just glide between sexual partners, which doesn't... do... anything. Self gratification.

Wow, so if I spend less time playing videogames and more time outside, I can meet douches who think that everything they don't like is a waste of time?

Also, he seems to know enough about videogames to be a gamer himself. There's a good chance he just described his own miserable life.

I think we'd all rather be crushing vag really...

Come on... be honest.
Some of us are not inclined towards females of our species though :p

OT: Think the guy lives under a bridge, y'know?

Anyway, ignore the fool, it's pretty simple, the bridge dwellers feed on attention.

I think what they are getting at is that adults shouldn't commit so much time to games, which they see as a childish hobby. Not to write off games entirely (after all, this is the escapist) but the fact is that a lot of games are childish (and I'm not just referring to the ones aimed at kids - most "adult" games are hardly as mature as they think they are) and I probably do spend too much time on them. Then again, I'm not entirely sure how I would spend that time otherwise.

For someone seemingly obsessed with "learning" he sure does butcher the English language with grammar and spelling mistakes. It's fine to make those mistakes but not when you're insulting someone's intelligence while trying to prove your own. You gotta word that shit properly, know what I mean?

Personally, I hate this type of attitude. You can't call yourself intelligent or less ignorant when you think this way. Seriously, the arrogance and stupidity radiate off the screen so much that I'm holding lead over my junk just reading it.

Let's forget the fact that he's bashing games, here. He's just not a nice person. I find it hard to believe he has the huge amount of friends he suggests he has and if he does, well, there goes my hope for humanity.

But it's not an unusual attitude at all. The gamer stereotype is suffering the same one that comic book fans are trying to shrug off. I feel that if video games were invented before plays or books we might be saying the same things about those right now. "Oh, written word? How sad."

Although, the thing I hate most is I can't talk to this guy and try to... I dunno.

To sum up: What a cock.

That's not exclusive to vidyagames. There's plenty of strokes of 'lowbrow' and 'childish' mass-appeal brush in books, television, music and most other pastimes, as you're most likely aware. Of course society's attitude towards vidyagames is that of hilarious misunderstanding and double standards, but a medium in and of itself can't be considered low-brow.

I've never really understood why gaming inspires guilt in seemingly quite a few of us, lawd knows I can relate.

That's what I reckon anyway.

Well, he's kind of got a point, to an extent. Too many of us do let gaming take over our lives to the point that we don't really have any other interests, and that is unhealthy.
Wouldn't you say that's true of anything else that takes up so much time, though?

I sound like I'm saying vidyagames can do no wrong; should establish that I'm not, but seeing as you can still find social interaction, use of thought, learning, creativity and all manner of other positive things in games (as well as other time-consuming pursuits), I don't see why doing it excessively should be treated as somehow 'worse' than doing anything else excessively. 'Course you don't always have something to show for it at the end, but the value of that depends on how much one values an end result. Some artists prefer to tear up their drawings after all, I can certainly empathise with that.

I love how I've managed to edit in a quote from the post that follows mine. I'm nothing if not an obsessive editor. Or maybe I just like things to be tidy.

Well, he's kind of got a point, to an extent. Too many of us do let gaming take over our lives to the point that we don't really have any other interests, and that is unhealthy.

However, I'm not going to take "carpe diem" from this guy because I don't get the sense he has a whole lot to brag about. You don't get to lecture other people on the value of learning if you dropped out of college. You don't get to lecture other people on the value of social skills if you can't get through a conversation without coming off like an arrogant, antisocial wanker.

Overall, the guy seems enormously insecure, and while some of his points may be valid of some people he's either overcompensating or trolling.

While they can sometimes be entertaining to read, stuff like this makes me happy we have mods here on the Escapist to prevent such slop from being posted here.

Sounds like my troll alarm has gone off.

I go by the policy that if someone tries to claim that they are "too busy crushing vag" (that actually sounds somewhat painful) they are severely compensating for something.

I think he should troll harder, he's quite bad at it.

Maybe if he had mentioned how his "vag-crushing" made him feel good about himself, and moved on to make himself look as misogynistic as possible, then I would have deemed him a worthy troll.

Um, what should I say? He sounds like a jerk who should be a) reported to the mods, assuming they're doing their jobs, and b) ignored forever after, whatever the results of said moderator-contact. Whether he's a run-of-the-mill troll deliberately trying to provoke an angry response or just a run-of-the-mill jerk who doesn't consciously realize his pathetic need to establish dominance over people he doesn't know, he doesn't deserve the validation of expending the energy to reply.
