You've pretty much gotten all the responses you need here, I think inu-kun said it best.
You brought a message that people generally disagreed with, and voiced a mild opposing opinion from your own point of view. Some disagreed with the fact you didn't share an opinion so they left a downvote. Keep in mind that some who disagreed with the opinion probably also left an upvote for the for the news and high production value meaning it's probably less of a 50:50 disagreement and more of a 40:60 disagreement. Being less professional might have resulted in your downvotes outweighing your upvotes.

What I want to know about though who are the people that leave dislikes on completely innocuous videos. Someone's cat video, someone's humble gameplay video of whatever, why the hate?

youtube, man. the community was always bad, and only getting worse. Some people will leave a dislike on a video simply because it had none when they stumbled upon it... a fate that becomes an inevitability if some well-meaning but naive fool in the comments leaves a comment to the effect of "Wow! No dislikes yet!", which... also becomes an inevitability the longer a video rolls without them.

I lean on youtube for entertainment at work, so I'm more familiar with it than most... but I've reasoned I'm better off not trying to rationalize the "why" of it all. my nihilism and misanthropy are bad enough as it is.

From what I know if a video starts getting too many dislikes all the while not getting too many views, YouTube will essentially bury the video and never recommend it. Not sure if it's still like that.

Like most tools in the world, it can be used for either good or bad. <- obligatory neutral message.

As for me, I hardly ever use the Like and Dislike buttons on YouTube videos, thus far I have only Liked videos that I actually-genuinely-100%-really-super-duper-Like and I use the "Liked Videos" list to get back to those videos from time to time and because I don't want this list getting cluttered, I usually don't just Like any old video. I should probably just move the super-duper-Like videos to a separate Playlist and be done with it, but eh, Je suis tres lazy 😔💦

I also hardly ever use the Dislike button either, unless I find the content of the video to be sketchy or of shitty quality, even then I will most likely ignore the video. One example of a video that I did dislike is Smosh Games' Honest Trailer for Crash Bandicoot because it felt just waaaaay off.

As for the example given, I wouldn't dislike a news video for reporting on a piece of news that I dislike, but I can see how people would do it. For some people it's a way to voice their opinion against the subject being discussed. A human eye can very well see that the dislikes are not aimed at the news caster but at the subject matter, now the question remains if YouTube's ranking algorithm is smart enough to see the difference.

Popular youtubers will inevitably have positive scores because they are almost exclusively watched by people who already like them, and these are the people bother to like/dislike. If someone doesn't like said popular youtuber's video, they'll click dislike and never watch another episode of that guy's show. These dislikers get drowned out quickly.

The only time this isn't the case is when popular youtuber's fans discover a video criticising said popular youtuber, than they flock to that video and mass dislike it. This happens often with Contrapoints, a person who makes very peculiar but exceptional (by youtube's standards) talking head videos - she criticises a lot of the MRI/skeptic youtuber types, and thus gets vote slammed over it.

I mostly use Youtube for tutorials or something to that effect; if it was useful I'll like it. I never dislike stuff - if I don't like something, I'll watch something else (though because of my viewing habits, almost all recommended videos are tutorials anyway, and there isn't much to dislike about someone trying to help you with something.)

I think Idiot-di-stupid name is oblivious to the consequences of his actions. I also think Advertisers are overreacting and shouldn't be withdrawing support for all of YouTube because of people like Idiot-di-stupid name. They should just withdraw support from those specific channels. If they can't do that, YouTUbe should give them the ability to do so.
Anyway, as for the like/dislike buttons, I only ever dislike something if it really pisses me off otherwise I just move on.

Well I do used the like button to keep track of the videos I liked.

I only used the dislike for petty trivials stuff to express myself on that video. Just to be clear, I played Fire Emblem Heroes and there are these stuff battles which there are guides to it. Most guides I've useed are the p2w related units used in the guide which I am f2p. I know it's petty seeing how the dislike doesn't do anything and there are more likes than dislike so it's harmless for those.

I don't think I ever used it. I add a lot of videos I like to lists I make though. If I don't like something I just ignore it and move on. Which is also why I never left a single comment on a youtube video, because who needs that shit.

Anyway, speaking of "the triggered" I notice the same trend in people who follow the youtube/instagram/whatever accounts of rich kids/millionaires/billionaires and their super hyper exotic cars and excessive life style. I just recently found out this is a thing, and I was amazed by the number of followers these rich guys have, for doing... I don't know, for being rich I guess? And the amount of comments idolizing them or defending these assholes when they do something stupid in traffic is just depressing.

I can only hope this behavior comes from children who don't know any better, but I know that isn't true because people will fight over the dumbest shit you can imagine. PlayStation vs Xbox, Consoles vs PC, Iphone vs Android, Website A vs Website B, Car Maker A vs Car Maker B, sports, etc... ultimately I think the like/dislike bar is just another tool in The War of the Triggered.

It's a pretty old phenomena, though I commonly see it attributed to the 'millennial' generation for some dumb reason.

In the end it's the advertisers fault, when you have ads on a platform designed for people to upload videos without any pre check besides copyright you'd have touchy content whether it's a guy saying ****** and immediately apologizing afterwards, political shitheads or ISIS recuitment videos. And thinking about it, this isn't a Johntron event with a full lecture, this contrevercy is by people combing through his videos looking for something to attack him with and using a single heat-of-the-moment remark for it.

But this is because the majority of those are children, I can gaurantee most of the views are by kids getting hyped on games rather for looking to political news and opinions.
I agree in a way that it is the advertisers' fault, but in another way I don't. When they're sponsoring someone, that individual is not just taking their money with no strings attached. In fact, no one who is currently working is doing that. Most contracts have their own form of Brand Protection, as if you comport yourself in a manner which they find distasteful, you can be reprimanded or summarily fired.

Now, where it is the Advertisers' fault comes down to backing an individual who goes live for a good percentage of the time, and is young and immature. That is an adverse risk if I ever heard one. It was stupid to think a child like that would be able to continually stay on message, but that's where they found themselves in. But if Bwana Pie signed those agreements (even with Youtube when he got monetized), his actions are his to suffer on.

Now, I should state this: I have not put in my opinion about the ACTUAL Pie-Seonsaengnim Word slip situation. Because it is as follows: I don't really care that he dropped an N-Bomb. I don't care if he fully hates all non-white people or he just listens to a lot of rap and thinks it's cool to say. I do not care about the videos he makes or how popular he is.

I'm using this as an fairly recent example to point out a matter that I truly don't understand: What people use or think the like/dislike button is for.

If we want to get into my politics, I simply don't get why a lot of people want to use the N-word. I don't understand why they are so concerned. Every group has limits attached to it. This is nothing new. Noone Examplehead might have a hot wife, and all the friends agree. And in fact, the common group joke is that every person in the group would rather come home to Examplehead's wife than their own.

But not one of them in their right mind would go to his face and say "Hey, Noone... you remember when you got drunk and you said that your wife was a hot little w**** and she did you right. Well, I believe it and I would let her do me right as well". If the husband disagrees with that kind of talk about his wife, you crossed the line.

Meanwhile, while he might permit that talk with his friends, he might frown upon it when his postal worker comes up and says just 'innocently' "Hey, Mr. Examplehead, you have a really sexy wife". Line crossed. There are always degrees of what is permissible when you're dealing with other people. The same is with every group of friends, group, association... It's nothing new.

Why certain people have picked being able to say the N-word as their hill to die on, instead of me being able to tell those certain individuals and the entire world how I do their hot wife in absolutely sinful ways is beyond me.

... What's that? Because it would offend THEIR sensibilities and that the line that shouldn't be crossed? Hmm. Interesting.

Lastly, I wouldn't take your guarantee. I spent a lot of time with kids at my previous job as a Para. They are miniature versions of their parents. Children shouldn't have politics at 5, but when you have to put boys in a time out because they were going to little girls saying that "President Trump doesn't like you, President Trump doesn't like you!", and then say they shouldn't be in trouble because the president says it's ok to act however you want to girls... it's safe to say that you can't just overlook stuff because you think they do not grasp it.

That actually reminds me of another thing I wanted to mention in regards to Idiot-de-stupid name (Pewdie Pie). It seems if you become famous enough you can do or say whatever you want and you'll still have legions of morons lining up to defend you.
