Yeah I know half of you are joking....but you know that china has no interest in conquering the US. If they did their own economy would collapse. China owns a lot of US debt, but our money is whole worth something as long as the country is sovereign.

If china invaded with military force and succeed (which I would be surprised given how much money the US spends on the military), they would enjoy a few weeks of over lordship until their own econ fell apart and it would result in BOTH countries being destroyed, not to mention the ripple effect the two giants falling would have on smaller countries.

Yeah china is smart enough to know this, which is why it will never, ever happen.
This is also why there won't be another war between two super powers in the near future. Everyone is too reliant on each other, thanks to globialisation of trade. In the 1910's and 1940's this didn't matter so much, and imperialism and conquest actually kinda worked. It doesn't anymore.

Warfare is relegated to squabbles and skirmishes for a good long time.

There are a few ways I see the US heading.

A) An outline of the situation presented in the novel 'Fahrenheit 451' by Ray Bradbery. But somehow more tragic, and with alot more soylent green. Loan debts and constant fear of imprisonment leave people fearing to protest, while the rich finally pull off that coup-de-grace they have been trying to swindle on the middle class since the 60's. People are either doing forced labour in prisons for commiting paltry crimes (which is happening now BTW) or are driven into the military for food.

B) History repeats itself and the US seperates after a civil war into the north and south. Obviously the first thing the south does is invade, and the country is overrun by something that looks similar to Caesar's Legion From Fallout: New Vegas except without all the cool outfits.

C) Total apocalypse! Humanity is destroyed by a combination of 'solar storms' a.k.a space radiation leaking in due to Ozone depletion; 'red tide' crisis a.k.a a toxic species of plankton that cannibalizes other plankton, killing all life in the ocean, and anything that eats anything from the ocean; Frequent asteroid collisions sparking megavolcanic eruptions, also caused by Ozone depletion; Heat waves; Nuclear waste from wars; and juggalos.

D) Aliens swoop down and save our asses at the last minute, sadly only for probing.
Or:

E) None of the above. The USA remains to have issues, but for the most part the country is still well operating and fully functional.

That's what will happen.

Nothing will be different.

If everyone actually paid attention to politics and voted accordingly, we wouldn't be in this fucked up mess. The sane, moderate citizens have always outnumbered the fringe right and left wingers, but we are apparently too complacent to give a fuck. Reap what you sow mother fuckers. Sloth is one of the seven deadly sins and you don't need a Bible to understand why.

If things start going to shit I have no doubt we'll start rioting and who knows maybe a revolution. Hopefully it won't come to that.

Glad someone gets it.

I don't see any states seceding, or states being added in 10 years, so the US should look exactly the same in 10 years.

As for geopolitically, it should be around the same - look people, no matter what anyone tells you about China or Japan, our GDP is still almost twice theirs, and that's for a good fucking reason. The only reason China exists anywhere close to its "economic powerhouse" status, is because we buy all that shit. They're not self-sufficient.

And who protects the world's shipping lanes again? Who makes sure that Western Europe needs a negligible military?

Nothing should happen to drastically change this status in the next 10 years. Whatever moves China/Russia come up with, we'll try to counter them. Whatever moves we'll come up with, Russia/China will try to counter them.

And to be honest, whatever domestic issues we may have, there will be far worse outside this country in the next 10 years. Water crisis, food crisis, liberalization, etc. won't affect us anywhere close to the level it will affect places like China, India, etc. The most absurd thing that could happen in America in the next 10 years, that's actually technically possible given all of our information, is a war or a pseudo-war between Texas and Oklahoma over water supply. That's the craziest thing possible, and I wouldn't put my money on it, but it could technically happen.

I'm curious to see what people think the US will look like in 10 years. How pessimistic or optimist are you towards the country's future?
Like it is now, except we're even less relevant on the world. Hopefully we'll have some sort of decent social security on par with other Developed countries.

Lets face it, our current situation isn't a "recession": It's how our economy will remain. Endless policies focusing on economic growth rather than stability are what have brought us to our current state. The US can't grow any more.

Hi. Oh, don't mind me, I'm just here to see how many trolls put a picture of the DC Wasteland.

On a serious note? Just the fricking same. I look out my door and my town doesn't look any different than it did 60 years ago, barring design and fashion. It's all the same crap polished and shined for the next generation, like it'll always be.

Pretty much how it is now, except with jetpacks.

Seriously, get on that future people, I want my goddamn jetpack. It is the year 2011, why do we not already have freakin' JETPACKS!?

Seriously: I reiterate what I said, I can't really see it changing much. Maybe the populace gets a little fatter, maybe we get a cool new building, maybe some stuff gets knocked down.

I predict the country will still be standing though.
We have jetpacks allready.

They just suck and it takes 10000+ to build one.

Read the comic Doctor Sleepless.

That is my answer.

We will be living in the"future" but we will lack the gadgets that we thought the future would bring. Where is my jetpack, or flying car graffiti will be rampant. Kids will be modding there body. The private sector will be running alot of the free world.

It will be a Science Fiction writers wet dream.

Well I know in 4 years we'll have weather control devices, hoverboards, hovercars, instant-bake pizzas, fax machines, and other technological marvel.

1. A new vacation home for the Republic of China
2. The Capitol Wasteland Except Everywhere Not Just the Capitol Wasteland.
Why would we be a vacation home for Tawain?

They kind of need us you know.

American Universities will have a much larger Chinese population. I don't mean Taiwanese/HK/ABC Chinese. I mean mainland Chinese.

Pretty much what it looks like now. You 'mericans might be Republican, but whatever. As long as you don't invade Canada or Mexico.
