1939-1945
instead of making a WWII game they actually just did WWII.
okay, jokes over.
I'd say the best years of gaming were probably birth of Super Nintendo to end of Playstation 2 (1991-2006). I know that's 3 generations of gaming, but those were some kick ass years of gaming.
pinnacle of gaming? that's a tough one. It'd either be N64 or PS2. The N64 really introduced the 3D world, but the PS2 perfected it. (The PS1 did do 3D, but it still really relied on 3D characters moving along a 2D background, and most of the PS1 classic games were 2D.)
The reason I cannot give the title to N64 era is because of games like Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, just to name a few just from the PS2.
The reason I cannot give it the PS2 era is because of Ocarina of Time, GoldenEye 64, StarFox 64 just to name games from the N64. It also needed an adapter for 4 players; I guess that's just points against it. If the PS2 had 4 player built in support it might have done better.
I'm still leaving out games like Symphony of the Night, Chrono Cross/Trigger, Zelda: a Link to the Past, Tekken series, Street Fighter 2s, Megaman series, Megaman X series, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasies, Pokemon series, Sonic Adventures, Sonic, NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, Halo*, Zelda: Twilight Princess, F-Zero GX, Super Mario Bros., TMNT Arcade, TMNT Turtles in Time, Super Metroid, like I've said, just to name a few. I know I've missed a bunch of awesome titles.
*NOTE: okay, Halo haters lets face it, Halo was basically GoldenEye 64 on steroids. Okay campaign, awesome multiplayer. that statement applies to both. Get over it.
You can see why I'm hesitant to shorten the time frame from SNES to PS2. those years were awesome. It was really hard to not include the NES, but ultimately the SNES was everything the NES was, but Super. I'd also include the Genesis but it was making fun of the NES and that's just not cool. 16 bit picking on 8 bit? Really? That's like watching 8th graders picking on 4th graders. You better watch your back because NES's big brother will show up and put you in your place and he's Super. Okay, last time I'm doing the Super Nintendo is Super joke.
Also, we have a LOT of great games in the current generations and it is a shame to not recognize those as well. However, I am not including them in the range because the systems themselves don't have gaming as the heart of the console. Gaming for the PS360 is more like the liver: still very important but not the focus. Look at Xbox, their focus isn't on the games, but their fancy way of getting through menus and connectivity between people. Look at PS3's tagline, It only does Everything. That's nice, but I'd like a system that has it's heart in gaming, not multitasking.
Personally (read: I don't care what everybody else thinks) when I'm gaming (reading a book, watching TV/film) I like to escape from this world into the fantasy world. Do you know how hard it is to stay in that fantasy world when the achievement/trophy thing or the ____ sent a message thing pops up reminding me of the barrier between realms? I have the same problem when the phone rings.
[Console]: [____ sent a game request.]
Me: What is wrong with you ____? can't you see I'm busy? [Console] even told you I'm not playing that game right now.
Then after that I have to get back into the game world? kinda sucks.
The Wii on the other hand is a very strange beast. hard to describe. Best way I can put it is that the Wii, like the PS360, the Gamecube, the Dreamcast and a few others is that they are good but not great. I'd like to give the PS360 and current gen games more credit, because they have some legitimately great games, but I feel so disconnected from the worlds they create. I'm trying to listen to a cutscene then *BLEEPBLOOP* Achievement Unlocked, completed mission 4. ANNOYING!!!
