What do you want in a console?

I'm gonna fanboy the place up and say everything the ps4 offers. Demo any game, stream games to my vita (I'm on the move a lot), video capture, play gamz while downloading, etc. Of course, there's no guarantee any of these features will work well so I'll have to reserve my judgment. Things I'd like to see Sony change would be adding something so I can change my user name. It should be like steam where you keep your account name the same but are able to change your player ID. And the price should start at $400ish. And I think there should be multiple models, like a more expensive model with backwards compatibility

I would go back to cartridges. With cartridges you don't need a hard disk or DVD/Bluray drive and you don't need much RAM. You cut out a big chuck of the hardware cost compared to PC and can pretty much just have a CPU and a graphics card and it will run as well as a PC costing far more.

Of course carts are expensive, so they'll probably be limited to say 3GB while the next gen uses 50GB Bluray disks. But it won't make as much difference as the comparison between CDs and 32MB carts in the mid 1990s. The difference was pretty stark back then because there are so many things that can't be done with 32MB
Cool idea. I never thought of that. I'm guessing cartages must be a little more expensive to mass produce than disks but if made results, I'd be willing to switch

+Put game in and play, no fussing
+Decent deals on games, cheap digital content
-No god damned DRM
-FASTER updates, 15 minutes to update PS3 on fios? Then another 10 to update the game? I can download full games on steam in that time.
+Options, as in let me set my control scheme or the ability to NOT use motion controls.
+More Cross Buy.
-No stupid 25 number promo-codes that have to be entered with a D-pad because the console blocks keyboard use.

What they used to be, basically.

You turned it on, put in your cartridge/disc and played. That was it, literally. I don't mind them doing other things now, we are indeed in the "smart-device" age.. but X1 went too far. Also, the Kinect 2.0 creeps me out, a lot. So I guess I like it when my console is not, "Always listening, always watching".

Ding ding.
Also if I'm going to be getting a console then it'll probably be because of exclusives what with the whole having a good PC biz, so that would help.

No inherent DRM. Tangible games, sold as products not services. Good graphical quality. A comfortable controller. Free online capability. An easy-to-navigate store that is consistent with content location and format. At the very least, ability to be played just as well without peripherals as with, although peripherals being available isn't at all bad. Free game demos. Backwards compatibility. Inherent screenshot and recording software. USB ports.

I have a TV and a computer. I want to play games on my console.

More on the games side of things, one edition for at least a year after launch, at which point a collector's edition could be available, no DRM, does not require signing up to extra third-party services at any point, no extra content available at launch, DLC reasonably priced, physical copies available.

And measuring your heartrate...and memorizing your face...

Yeah, the mandatory Kinect is one of my two main problems with the XBone, the other being the fact that it effectively won't allow used/rented games. Why rent a game when you'll have to pay the full-price for it when you try to install it? Why buy a game used when you're going to have pay for it again to install it? It's their way of saying "no used/rented games" without ACTUALLY saying "no used/rented games".

Beyond that...whatever happened to the concept of a game console just playing games? I'll give'em a pass by trying to link in Facebook and crap since that's trendy right now, but no one is going to be buying a game console to watch TV...because most people can do that already without the need for a game console. Nobody liked Kinect no matter how hard Microsoft pushed it...why are you now shoving it down our throats? I swear, they pulled a page right out of EA's playbook by trying to "Broaden the audience" for the console by putting in a bunch of extra crap no one wanted. And I've got a feeling that just like with EA, Microsoft will end up alienating a large portion of it's consumer base by doing this.

Lots of great games, free online support, backwards compatibility in some form, no unnecessary social networking BS I'll never use, no required install of games that I bought retail.

BECAUSE THIS IS THE MOST WELL-DESIGNED CONTROLLER EVER MADE DAMMIT.

My Dream Console! How did you know?

And what would really improve on that is SSB Melee online all around the world.

I wanted them to be very convenient as the old saying that goes "you just pop it in and it works", that stays behind the curve in graphics and makes games less expensive, that has a normal controller and that is backwards compatible with the previous one if possible.
Basically this. I have 3 computers, every console of this generation and most of the last, and smartphones, tablets etc etc, I don't need nor want another device that can do everything, it's just redundant and stupid.
The console is there for the exclusive games, since the PC can take the gamepad any genre that works best with one I can already use on the PC which is always on, compared to the console that needs to boot up and I need to change channel to bring up (pc connected to 26" TV). When getting to the exclusive games become more trouble than their worth (and there aren't enough to justify the cost) then the console very quickly gets left on the shelf of the store, I am not going to waste money on a system that causes me headachs, especially one which its future is doomed (server requirement means that once their down the XBone will be a heavy paperweight).

All I want it to do is plug and play. A way to network consols would be cool. The only thing I want is a machine that plays complete video games. They should just release the Atari 2800 with HDMI and new content.

I'd love to have some hypothetical PSVita 2 with superior (like PC level) graphics, that would have 100% identical port of every new and old PlayStation game and I would like it to have better Web Browser (because Vita's browser fucking suuuuuucks). So, basically, I wanna fully functional console in a handheld form. And of course, many games, free multiplayer and no DRM bullshit.

LoL a XBone a disaster... that might be overstating things a bit. Sure escapists might be whipping themselves into a frenzy over things they really dont know anything about yet, but this wont be the train wreck the drama queens on this forum think it will be.

what I want in a console

1. Good Developer support and supporting good developers so the library of games can be good
2. reliability, No red rings, no massive network hack failures.
3. confortable, durable, accurate controllers
4. online capability
5. couch co-op

Thats it.
I'm so glad someone else likes couch co-op. Why is this no longer a thing?

I'd also like backwards compatibility. Just yesterday I was playing Final fantasy 9, in disc form, on my PS3.

I suppose the same thing I want in my PC only with a few additions. I want endless customization of hardware and software, a wider variety of games then I could get on any other system, cheaper games prices, the ability to mod just about anything I play, online and local multiplayer, game demos, and no DRM/always online nonsense

I use my PC and consoles to play games. So I don't care about TV, social media, and non-forcefeedback motion controls.

Pretty much what everyone else is saying. I would consider the PS2, SNES and Gamecube to be the top 3 most solid consoles I've had, each with good well-designed controllers, large libraries of games, and stability enough to go the distance (yes, even my SNES is still kicking, and I got it about six months after it came out).

That said, I would like for a new console to have internet capability closer to PCs where you can just use a menu to check when and why your connection goes bad.

Brace yourselves for this shocker but... drum roll please...

I'd like to be able to play games on it! =D

As in, I can buy games (for not ridiculous prices) new OR used, and put them in and play them. The ability to watch DVDs is nice too, as is the option to download games. More importantly than those though is a LARGE selection games.

After that, do everything I just said really well. Motion controls, social connectivity crap, all of that can just disappear.

Sounds like PC.

/PC master race.

But seriously, I agree with you. All gamers want is to play games, but consoles are trying to cater to everyone, nowadays, to the extent where "games console" is misleading. "Entertainment system" or "media device" might be more appropriate.

Wait a second, one more thing...

You put basics in basic terms? BASICCEPTION.

The PS3 still does everything I want a console to do. I'd love a new gen as long as its changes are worth anything.
