I'd love to see:
- DoW1 gameplay (but on an even larger scale dependent on army type i.e. 1 squad of space marines is 10 dudes, but 1 squad of guardsman is 25 at a minimum).
- FIX THE PATHFINDING
- Ditch that lame-ass DoW2 (maybe rename it Dawn of Wannabe, or Dreams of Pretension or something) and make a real DoW2.
- A multilayered campaign - space, air and land, have different theatre's of battle taking place at the same time rather than following one small army as it staggers drunkenly around a global map
- Persistent, developing armies ala Total War and similar games. I want a reason to get attached to my troops rather than throwing them mindlessly at the enemy and grinding out another 50 units. Unless you're playing Guard. Then that's exactly what you should be doing.
- Some real story mechanics behind the missions, rather than the fairly pathetic "take over the whole planet 'cause we said so" mechanics of DC and Soulstorm. That wasn't a campaign, it was just a graphically driven "Quick Battle" menu.
- FIX THE PATHFINDING
- Ditch standard resource management and either a) run on a global resource system that you use to build bases and recruit units into your persistent armies (kinda like what DC and SS tried to do and sucked so horribly at) or b) run everything on the only resource that really matters in W40K - TIME.
- Destructible terrain. I want my Earthshakers to be able to tear up the terrain, making it difficult for the enemy to cross etc.
- Smarter unit AI. Having a unit maintain its perfect square formation so that only half the unit gets cover from a crater or whatever is mentally retarded. Also, you should have more control over the AI of the unit, rather than the unit itself. This is RTS - Real Time Strategy. Not Real Time Handholding And Nosewiping. Micro belongs in small games. DoW should be sweeping and epic. I flat guarantee a Warmaster or Lord General does NOT send individual orders to each and every unit and trooper.
- Also, enough pretending that anybody is a nice guy or heroic in W40K. They're all psychopathic loonies and should be reflected as such.
- Shoot whichever writer came up with some of the ridiculous speeches etc. in DoW. Sphess Mehreens might be excellent comedy, but it's rubbish immersion.
- Make research global and persistent. Researching Plasma Guns (or whatever) every single map is ridiculous.
Private: ZOMG! Look, sir! A plasma gun!
Sarge: Didn't we have those last map too?
P: Yeah, but we zoned, right. That means we forget everything and leave most of our troops behind, sir.
S: Isn't that kind of a waste of resources?
P: Well, sir. That's imperial policy, sir. Something about making generals value their equipment or something.
