I want a console that has none of those gimmicks that, I think, pester today's market.
Yes...
No wiimote.
No natal.
No third axis.
Old school console with new school muscle... That's what I would like... And free online play...

Ohh... And let me keep my Guitar Hero.

One thing I thought for the next-gen, a concept similar to a console, is a PC Operating System that has no "application framework layer" or 90% of the things a normal operating system would have to support all manner of setups, and just loads a rudimentary user interface to install or play video games.
The idea being that hopefully, this would massively cut down on errors, simplify PC gaming, and maybe even increase performance.

No more broken discs!
you can switch games without getting off the couch!
This is where the industry is headed anyways. I called it.
I would think that this would be the next step. You can buy old games from the PSP and PS3 stores right? Considering that music is increasingly being bought without the CD, would it be the same for games? There would have to be a way of making sure that you wouldn't lose the games if your console died on you.

Meh, I want mine to play games. Occasionally movies so I won't have to switch channels.

If we're going into speculation though, I want a minibar in mine. And preferrably a toaster, as someone said. And I want it liquid nitrogen cooled, because, hell, it's liquid nitrogen.
Bigger HDD and ofcourse an online service. And fucking backwards compatability, I can only keep so many consoles in my house before I start running out of place...

Firstly it is way too early to be talking about next gen, I don't expect to see anything till 2012 at the earliest, we are no where near done with this generation. But while I think about it:

Free Xbox Live

Dedicated servers used as standard

More cohesive motion sensing setup.

Backwards compatibility with upped resolution/anti-aliasing/Anistropic-filtering

Similar but improved architecture, so developers can use current knowledge in new systems

Reasonable launch price.

Not NECESSARILY every game in 1080p60, but choose 720p if necessary.

More customisable gamepads, like longer/shorter analogue sticks, even re-arrange buttons.

Haptic feedback on analogue triggers.

Easier to use surround-sound headphones/speakers - possibly via a built in amp

BRING BACK MOUSE + KEYBOARD SUPPORT!!!

3D... implemented on old Monitors/TVs... don't know how.

Hmmm, tough question:
-The graphics on certain PS3 games are still pretty awe inspiring, so a graphic improvement isn't that important to me.
-I'm on my second 360, so a machine that is built properly first time would be good.
-I'm not interested in motion sensitivity, all my experiences of it have not felt intuitive and I've felt an idiot waving my hands around. I wouldn't be surprised if motive sensitivity came back next-gen so how about an option to play with or without?
-Alot of my PS3 games run at 720p. 1080p would be nice.

As for games; some new original titles/ideas. If I pay full price for a game, I want a full story mode campaign. DLC is obviously unavoidable as is online multi-player, but dont let me feel it's not at the expense of the story/game I've paid for.

Wow, everyone's thinking so inside the box, the most out-landish desire has been 'a console that plays all current-gen software' - not even one that can handle all past software. Heck, people even just want a box with a disk drive and a traditional controller. Wow... console gaming sounds really fun, guys :p
I think it shows that we just want our games to work haha.

I'm hoping we don't see this happen for a while, as I've already emptied my pockets on the current generation and really don't want to have to start over.

Although Microsoft should probably pay someone else to do theirs.
(Edit: I think they're watching me, my 360 just thought Guitar Hero 5 was a movie...ugh)
And even though it's useless to mention PLEASE STOP THE MOTION CONTROLS.

Why the caps on gen?

I don't want a new generation yet. I'd rather they get accustomed to the current, and make fantastic games for it, than rushing forward and forcing devs to work with whole new toolkits and game engines.
Same here.. I'm tired of jumping through hoops every time a developer decides to be innovative.. Calm down and enjoy what we have for a little while..

Backward Compatibility... After all the things I've downloaded on my PS3, Wii and 360, I certainly hope they will transfer to the next console and I won't lose every arcade or virtual console game I've spent money on. It'd be nice if Xbox caries over your gamertag/achievements too.

Other than that, and the obvious faulty hardware issues, I don't think much really needs to be added as far as consoles go. I'm sure they already are working on faster processors and better graphics cards so we can get more games with cutscenes more amazing than your average movie yet gameplay less fun than being hit by a brick...

As a 360 owner, I'd settle for a system that doesn't curl up and die during my tenure as its owner and some legitimate backwards compatibility.

Native full HD.
This mainly.

Most games are rendered at 720p or less (sometimes much lower res) on current consoles and upscaled.

next console starting with a decent amount of onboard ram: current gen has 512MB vs the average PC at launch having roughly 2GB plus 256-512mb GPU ram.
lately the lead on the PC is immense, being roughly 4GB + 1GB GPU ram average... Would mean less loading screens and/or better quality textures.

as for other things:
User replaceable HDD on all models (like the PS3's HDD), preferably large and not locked-down/propriety like in the 360
Reliability - more in the PS3's range
Looks - not ugly like the PS3
Controller - as comfortable as the 360 pad (the PS3 one is horrible!)

More downloadable full titles. a more steam like service would be awesome.

Hopefully the server would keep track of all your information: gamer tag, trophies or achievements, account info and purchases, etc. In the event that something goes wrong with your console, you can contact them and they can restore everything you lost.

Blue-ray catching on just like DVD?

I think not!

Also, I'd like Sony and Microsoft to merge together so the console wars could stop.
it could, never know, if Sony want to be greedy fair enough but one day their will be no DVD's and Blu-Ray will be all over the shelves, one day developers are going to need the drivers to play them.
HD DVD didn't stay for long, now did it?

Blue-Ray players are also shit expensive. Chances are that there will come better alternatives before they catch on.

When it comes to Blue-Ray players in consoles, it's also expensive to build that in. And the Wii has shown that clever innovation also sells.

Saying that DVD's will be gone one day is very plausible, but I doubt that Blue-Ray players will be the only thing fighting for that spot.
Agreed, plus Blu-ray players still play dvds, an advantage videos never had, so they'll doubtless last a lot longer as some people might opt for cheaper dvds rather than blu ray for some films. Plus blu-ray is still hardly a universal format, so many great films have yet to be released in blu ray, Star Wars being an obvious example, and it took star wars years to even reach dvd (2004 I believe)
Sorry, but Blu-ray players aren't exactly expensive anymore... Can pick up a decent model for around 100 pounds now. Since getting a new TV it's all I buy, the quality of sound and video is staggering. Of course if your're watching on a 28inch Standard Def CRT it's pointless, but it's the only way to get the most out of the new high end hi def screens out there.

On topic:
Better graphics (Yes I care)
No motion gimicks, I don't care.
Good development platforms so it will be easier to make high quality games by allowing developers to better realize their ideas.
Don't fall into the 3D trap just yet.
