What do your loved ones think about your gaming?

I have had several frustrating moments when my family members saw me playing with my N64 and pointing out that every game that I had was essentially the "same". Now I mostly game on the PC but tension about the subject has only gotten worse as I got older. I also play when I am alone to avoid the senseless altercations.

Does your family understand your gaming? What does your family or loved ones think about your gaming habits?

*EDIT: I can see that there are generational experiences. Games have been around since the mid 80s. The people who played in the 80s probably have kids of their own and are more accepting as parents. My parents already had an Atari gamer before I came along but my brother fell out of his habit before I jumped into gaming. Maybe they thought that I would grow out of it like my brother did.

They don't mind, in fact since I live in Penzance it is either this or drugs, and my mother agrees that this is a pleasant alternative.

My parents are fine with it. I've even tried to get them interested in gaming, and managed to get my Dad to try Resident Evil 4 on the Wii.

My family used to go on at me wasting my childhood, and I should go play outside more with the other kids in my street.

Ofcourse, now I'm all grown up and doing well at uni, and the kids down the street eventually turned to drugs and crime...they don't complain quite as much. Gotta love vindication.

Totally get the 'every game was the same' jibe, I'd usually counter with 'well most of the music you listen to is the same, most of the films you watch are the same', then they explain how there are subtle differences you won't notice at a glance, realise it applies to games too and they they'd shut up.

I was a pretty smug kid, now I think about it.

QFT. i had the same exact experience. only my parents threw in the 'oh but its so expensive...' line. then we had this conversation...

me: how much does it cost to rent a movie?
mom: about 5 dollars.
me: how long does that entertain you for?
mom: about 2 hours.
me: so paying 50 dollars for 50 hours of fun is less efficient than renting 10 movies, 50 bucks for 20 hours of entertainment.
mom: ....

they think it's all just bland and shootey, although i'm trying to get my mom into it using Fallout 3 and a bit of brainwashing.

Every game I play is the same, because, you know, GTA4, Halo 3 and Oblivion is also set in an Undersea Madhouse.

Other than that, my parents don't mind what I do, as long as I enjoy it.

My mom likes to mention how all I do is play games, and how I need to work more, blah blah. Well, I have a part-time job, which is more than quite a few people can say, and it's my summer break before college, so I'll be a lot more busy in the months to come.

She gets pretty annoying.

My mother is an English Lit. teacher so you can only imagine how much she disapproved. She was so pissed when my dad bought me Mortal Kombat for me when I was 7 years old. She came around a bit when I was 17 and actually became slightly interested in Resident Evil. She even bought me a PS2 to play DDR on along with GTA: San Andreas (oh the irony). Then I discovered WoW and it was back to hating video games...but then I quit that and I'm getting into game design so for once the subject matter of video games is appropriate dinner conversation.

Thats a good shout :p

OT: Parents don't care either way, never really have. Gf doesn't really mind, and joins in occasionally, but when ever she comes around there are generally better things to be done.
