What does it take to earn a legit version of the title "Hardcore Gamer"

I don't use the term "hardcore" because it makes me think of mall kids and the less I think of them the better.

Someone who is highly adaptive to new situations and can seamlessly move from one game to the next.

I have some alternatives;

Has spent rent/bill money or other 'proper' cash on games
Has an encyclopeidic knowledge of where all the hidden spots are in seemingly any game
Has at some point been invited round someones house for the sole purpose of completing a boss/level its owner can't manage
Can smoke a joint and snipe at the same time
Knows exactly how long they can leave their tea standing before its too cold
Fingers instinctivly hover over WASD when at a keyboard-even at work

I love that last one, i have to admit that i instinctively do that all the time.

Play everything on everything without judging. Just enjoying games in general.

Diversity is key.

Everything from Solitaire to Pac-Man in an arcade to anything on a Console/PC. A hardcore gamer just enjoys games in general.

I remember a few months ago me and my girlfriend would dispute about the fact that she was a hardcore gamer. She said she was, but I would to this day say she's not. She only played music games and maybe some Mario racing on the wii. But of course, this definition is a form of opinion. So, what do you think someone has to do or fall under to be considered a legit gamer?

Here are some ideas I thought of.

1.Have played all the genres
2.Have played with other players.
3.Has a game collection
4.Has their own sophisticated opinions on games.
5.Plays on a 3 day basis.
6.Have been inspired to do something by video games. Like join this forum.
7.Hopefully can aim a gun in a fps. Assuming they play them often.
8.Last but not least. Has thrown a remote of some kind some were.

So any ideas from you guys?

I would say, in conventional thinking, no, she is not. Why do I say that?

I am a gamer. I play games every day of my life. I study Games and Interactive Entertainment at university (major in design, minor in programming). But do I consider myself a "hardcore" gamer? Not really. And it's not just because I loathe the term.

It's because I've never been in a clan. I've never played game after game of CounterStrike (I've always found the game to be quite dull). I've never kicked ass at Call of Duty. I don't even like Halo. I usually play single player. I don't like to immerse myself in the underbelly of gamer culture that is XBL. Even when playing MMOs, I tend to be solitary. I never have any desire to get the best kill:death, or phat lewtz, or whatever. I hate online pissing contests even more than I do irl.

I think it's that e-peen-free attitude that keeps me from being "hardcore". I have no problem with that. I play games for entirely different reasons.

Well basically your whole list but to add something to it. They must go on a forum like this and check out news regularly and know what is happening in gaming world for this reason I don't even count most people as normal gamers because of this. If your a gamer you WILL be interested in gaming related news and seek it out the same as a sports fan WILL be interested in sporting news and seek it out.

Gamer - Somebody that plays games regular.
Hardcore Gamer - Somebody that plays games seriously. Buys things to improve his "game" like custom game pads/keyboards. Has strict tactics on how to play his game. Plays more than necessary just for Trophies/Achivements/Secret items

Hardcore gamer is the guy who has dedicated his life to gaming. Thats it. It could be only one game... but thats his life. I'm an avid gamer but i am no hardcore gamer, i do other things than improve my performance a smidge after a 10 hour sesh of Modern Warfare.

And he will get on these forums and let all of you know hes so hardcore he actually took steroids just so he could rage harder at all you noobs.

I think hardcore gamer refers to someone who will dedicate above and beyond the usual effort to play the game. Im talking about people who enter overseas tournaments and take things very seriously. In pokemon some people examine the aspect of stat growths calculating the variations in the nature of the pokemon, gender, base stats, growth stats, bonus points, effort values, which opponents give the best said stats etc. Which you need for tournamnet play but you don't need that much detail in order to complete the game.

I've never thrown a remote anywhere, the best would be mashing my keyboard, or slamming my mouse repeatedlyintothedeskbecausethegoddamnthingranoutofbatteries. Yeah...

Yeah I'd say you have some good options there. However you still need to define 'all genres' I still maintain that sports games aren't a genre just a subgenre of a sim game (because I hate them) - but I have still played them.

Another one you could add, but this is very hardcore is doing modding. I did that a few times, gave up all the projects though .

Well, most people are under the notion that "Nintendo" systems aren't for the hardcore anymore, as the company has geared itself more-so towards family games and third part titles, with the AAA titles few and far between. So i kinda took that idea in. back in the day.....having a Nintendo meant a lot more (predating the console war with Sony,Nintendo and MS) but not so much now. i own a Wii, but i really don't use it very much. and its also a Gamecube system..plus i also still have my Gamecube. i dunno..ultimately you think what you like. This is just what most people feel in this regard. as far as I'm aware.
