First: shoot him with the Dartgun, it does little damage, but it instantly cripples the legs, which eliminates the Deathclaws prime advantages (his speed and jump/lunge attack). Second: blast away.
New Vegas. No dartgun.

I've never played Fallout, but I'm pretty sure you can kill just about anything with enough well-placed bullets.
The problem is, this thing does not like it when you put bullets into it. It will communicate this displeasure by closing in on you at about 40 miles an hour and hitting you with a decapitating lunge that can knock you off your feet. If you're still alive it will swing it's 6 foot long arms around and decapitate you thusly. At his level he could pour all the bullets he can afford to purchase or carry (bullets have weight, and are expensive when you start the game) into the thing and probably just make it mad. To put in in traditional RPG terms, he has walked up to a dragon, armed only with a wooden stick.

And that was my first encounter with a Death Claw. havent gone back to sloan since.... I want to go back to explore it Escapist. How do i go about it?
You may want to reach new vegas (which is down that road) but I must warn you, that is a dangerous area. If you make it past that Deathclaw there are several more down the road, actively patrolling. Your best bet is to use a stealthboy (like the one the powder ganger leader in goodsprings has on him) and try to sneak by. But deathclaws are very perceptive. If you don't have the silent running perk they might still hear you move, or for that matter "smell" you or see your blur.
I would just avoid this place for now and come back with better gear and more levels under your belt.
If you insist on fighting it at this level I wouldn't use guns at all. I played on hardcore and went with unarmed skill to avoid buying and carrying ammo for the first part of the game. This will give you three skills, uppercut, cross and stomp (at level 80 skill) that when used in vats perform quick shuffles to various parts of your opponent. You will probably die a lot learning how to do it, but with boxing tape, a little luck, and a lot of skill you can knock out a single deathclaw, then kill it on the ground. Be warned however, there are groups of multiple deathclaws past him. (two groups of three on your left facing north, one group of two on your right) and claws who pat across the road.
Once on the road do not go right. Hostile super mutants live there who will butcher you. They are big, have a lot of health and their weapons (mostly big guns) make very large holes.
Do not go left. You will run into Cazadors near rocky outcroppings and open desert. Cazadors are giant mutated wasps that are VERY fast, attack in swarms, have a two foot long stinger that tracks movement well and lethal poison. At level two you could maybe take one with a good guns skill if you back away, firing rapidly and crippling the wings. They are weak against fire and a cross punch in vats when they rear up on their backs, while stepping sideways will work you around to their backside which counts as a hit to the wings or torso.
Even with these strategies I would avoid fighting any of these things at this point. Try to sneak, stick to the road, when the stealthboy wears off, run. If you need to alter something's patrol route, a silenced varmint rifle shot will get them to head to where the bullet hits. It's pretty much a long straight run to new vegas on it. You will find a place if you stay on the road called the "allied tech building" and run into a few gang members called fiends. Feel free to hunt them. They are no problem and their weapons sell well. Pretty much any way here will lead you towards an entrance to "Freeside".
As a personal tip, find the old Mormon fort. You will find the Followers of the Apocalypse there, a post-nuclear version of the red cross. You can do all their quests with 50 speech skill and when you hit idolized they give you a powerful lab coat (10 science, 10 medicine) and a safe house with gear (reinforced combat armor, hunting shotgun), refilling refrigerators for free food, clean water, free medicine and restful beds. They also have two vendors in the area who'll give you a discount on medicine and doctor services and buy your items at full price even with a low barter skill.
