What does the word "hipster" mean to you?

In my social life, I'm called a hipster often. It's become a frequent go-to heckling amongst my friends. I don't try to be a hipster, nor consider myself one. It doesn't bother me to be called a hipster, I know I fit some of the stereotypes, so I can't blame people for the association. While I know what the idea of a hipster is,I do not actually know much about actual hipsters.

So I pose this question to you: What does hipster mean to you? Is it a social trend, a lifestyle, a mentality? Is it the kind of annoying guy that thinks he's better than you because he knows bands you don't? Please share your opinions and let's have a civil discussion, not a hate thread.

Pretentious, contrary, thoroughly punchable, terrible facial hair.

These are words I use to describe hipsters.

This needs to be here:

OT, to me it's mostly a word that gets thrown around a lot, I get called it too cause I don't have facebook and generaly am not too susceptible to trends and all my pants and shoes are well-worn and stuff, then people think I'm going against trends on purpose because oh so edgy; but it's more like I just let them sail past me if they don't seem too interesting.

In terms of music, trends, art, all of the above, or what?
Because everyone has at least one thing they liked before it became popular, I'd think.

Are these traits that all hipsters have, or a majority? && How do you distinguish a hipster from a normal person?

Disclaimer: I do not in any way intend to offend anyone with the following opinion.

The people I actually call hipsters tend to embody the negative stereotypes associated with the term. The pretentious attitude, the over the top and usually failed attempts to prove that they don't conform with society, etc. Ironically enough, just like many goths, their actions often just prove that they let society determine their choices after all, albeit in a slightly unusual manner.

As for those who remain, that is to say the more reasonable individuals that have similar superficial characteristics but are missing the toxic attitude. I tend to simply consider those people to be the newest generation of beatniks. Beatniks were a 50s-60s era social group with very similar ideals to the trend in question.

Eh, I give everyone the benefit of the doubt until they open their mouth.

Someone might like dress like a prat, but I'll only be an issue if they act like one too :D

I usually get called a hipster on the basis that I have (prescription) glasses and am out of the media loop. Like you, I don't go towards or against trends. I don't wear trendy clothes, I just wear dress shirts and whatever seems cool to me.

Yes. Any at all of the above. Of course, to be a true hipster, you have to brag about this fact too.

That's actually a very civilized and insightful answer. I knew a lot of goth kids back in the day that tried to prove society and trends didn't affect them, but went so hard against those things that they would avoid things that were trendy, hence making their lives directed by them. It's kind of ironic when people try so hard to be unique and all end up acting the same, like you said. I don't actually go against or with trends, I just do my own thing without any regard for it. My friend says that makes me a proto-hipster.

So to you, hipsterism is entirely about the "holier than thou" attitude?

What if an individual, in this case myself, tells people about bands nobody knows in an honest effort to spread good music, rather than to flaunt their "superior" musical tastes? Would that make them/me a hipster?

With ugly moustaches, unseasonsal clothing and a dreadful odor specifically, or does this extend beyond the expected sterotypes?

I see what's going on here.

You almost had me.

Nice try, robot.

You might be able to fool my fleshy brethren, but you won't get the information from me so readily.

I'm on to you.

Nah, especially if the phrase "you probably wouldn't understand" doesn't get said.

Of course, if you end up getting to be something of a nuisance by spreading music that is obscure with good reason you might end up getting called things other than a hipster. But that's always a hazard when sharing your tastes with others.

Of course, I might be a bit biased here. The majority of the music pieces playing on my primary Pandora station is either at least twenty years old rock of some description, is orchestral music composed for a movie, or is some relatively obscure band playing a weird blend of modern rock music and classical/folk music.

For some reason this has led Pandora to keep suggesting Broadway music in spite of my assurances that I'm not really a fan...

I assure you I'm completely organic.

Like hipster cigarettes.

I used to use pandora but it kept playing radio music and garbage.(Not calling all mainstream music garbage mind you ;P) My station was mostly for Pixies but now I own all of their albums so I have no reason to use it. Also to my dismay nobody will try out my music because everyone thinks "hipster bands" are garbage D:

I think a hipster is someone who does/likes what they want despite what society says. In that respect i consider myself a bit of a hipster, i like what i like and i dont care what anyone thinks. I dont follow the herd simply because its cool

Theres a bit of a stereotypical homogonised hipster image of the thick rimmed glasses hanging out in indie coffee shops and bars listening to mogwai. This may be the case but a hipster could arguably be anyone who doesnt follow the herd because they feel obligated to
