To me, a hipster is someone who liked it befor it was cool.
In terms of music, trends, art, all of the above, or what?
Because everyone has at least one thing they liked before it became popular, I'd think.
Yes. Any at all of the above. Of course, to be a true hipster, you have to brag about this fact too.
What if an individual, in this case myself, tells people about bands nobody knows in an honest effort to spread good music, rather than to flaunt their "superior" musical tastes? Would that make them/me a hipster?
Everyone should try to spread good music methinks. Buuut, I'mma run a scenario by you.

There was a Halloween party I went to a few years back, started having a conversation about music with this one guy. At some point he mentioned a band I was unfamiliar with. I said something along the lines of, "Ah, never heard of 'em."

I was expecting him to describe the style of music or something along those lines at that point. Instead, his reply was "Yeah, I listen to a lot of bands nobody knows about." At that point I just turned my back on him and walked away. 'cause he was a total jag.

Eh, I give everyone the benefit of the doubt until they open their mouth.

Someone might like dress like a prat, but I'll only be an issue if they act like one too :D
So to you, hipsterism is entirely about the "holier than thou" attitude?
Pretty much. But they must also dress like a prat :D
With ugly moustaches, unseasonsal clothing and a dreadful odor specifically, or does this extend beyond the expected sterotypes?
I see what's going on here.

You almost had me.

Nice try, robot.

You might be able to fool my fleshy brethren, but you won't get the information from me so readily.

I'm on to you.

I don't quite understand what you're insinuating.

Better watch your back.

There's more passive aggressive GIFs where that came from.

Theres a bit of a stereotypical homogonised hipster image of the thick rimmed glasses hanging out in indie coffee shops and bars listening to mogwai. This may be the case but a hipster could arguably be anyone who doesnt follow the herd because they feel obligated to
I guess by that definition, (The first) I am a hipster. Like you, I don't care about the herd or the opinions of others.

As for the second, I've never even been in a coffee shop, but I do have thick glasses (Prescription, they were the only ones that I liked that were affordable, and they certainly are not Ray bands or whatever the kids are wearing these days) and I love Mogwai but only because a dear friend showed me them.

I've never actually met someone who has done that. When I hear "I've never heard of them" (Which actually happens a lot, because like I said, I usually try to spread the music around) I describe them and compare them to more popular bands they might know, to the best of my ability, at least.

I'm not familiar with a lot of popular bands aside from what my exes have showed me.

I find the only requirement one needs is to embrace a contrary lifestyle for the sake of being contrary.

Proving the latter is difficult but often times the subject gives themselves away either through admission or overwhelming occurrences.

So a hipster is only a hipster if they're different on purpose, in your opinion?

I know plenty of people who could probably be considered hipsters but aren't really that bad.

Regardless, I generally give it a negative association. Generally I find it to be someone who tries so hard to show that society doesn't have any control over them that they end up proving that society completely controls them. I have friends like this as well, and part of me just wants to punch them at times (in a friendly manner of course). Maybe it's because every time they talk it is obvious that they are forcing themselves to do something because they want to prove something about themselves (i.e. they're completely self-absorbed in an elitist image of themselves), whereas I know plenty of people that do it simply because that is who they are. When you have enough friends on both the "I'm a hipster because that's who I am" side and "I'm a hipster because I want to show how independent I am" side, then the divide between the "good" and "bad" ones becomes more apparent.

By my reckoning you are a hipster. If you dont follow the herd or care about other people opinions and have your own taste then you are a hipster

I hate this attitude of doing something deliberatley because its uncool. Thats not a hipster thats just someone who is being deliberately obtuse. If its uncool and you like it dont be ashamed, similarly if its popular and with the heard but you like it then theres nothing wrong with that

Edit: its ok to wear thick rimmed glasses and its ok to listen to mogwai and go to indie bars and coffee shops but doing it simply because you want to be different and edgy makes you no different to those who try too hard to fit in

I have a single friend who refers to herself as a hipster, albeit only in jest/self-deprecating humor.

As far as other people I know, I don't know anyone who intentionally fights the crowd, or at least any who will admit it or that are obvious. I also know one other individual who is called a hipster about as much as I am, but he seems to be truly doing his own thing and receiving flak for it.

I personally only call other people hipsters as a joke but I often hear it as an insult.

I can live with being a hipster. I can also live without being a hipster. Neither would change how I do things, so I guess I am.

I don't understand individuals who intentionally go against trends, or try to not fit in in order to fit in. I like people who can be themselves and not worry, like me, even if they aren't like me. Trendy or not.

I think this is the least you can expect from someone. Part of my understanding of the term hipster is that you have your own tastes and opinions so naturally you shouldnt judge other people for theirs

No, they're different WITH the purpose of being different. Someone can be different and that doesn't make them a hipster, it's being different for the sake of being different that makes someone a hipster.

It's almost like there's two flavours of ice cream. Vanilla and poo. Everyone's taking vanilla but the hipster takes poo. Not because he likes the taste of poo but because he wants to fight the current for the sake of fighting the current. He picks poo because everyone else is picking vanilla.

He's not contrary because his tastes are different - contrary IS his taste. Contrary is the objective.

If one doesn?t meet that criteria for something then they?re not being a hipster about something.

They can, however, just be a dickhead.

Someone who is trying to seem more unique/intelligent/cultured than the masses via pretending to dislike anything that is popular and throwing out obscure references because calling some one and idiot or uncultured for not knowing some obscure media they know of makes them feel above them. At the very least it's someone overly proud of the fact that they "don't conform" and look down on those who do not share their taste.

There is nothing wrong with disliking what is popular and liking what isn't. That doesn't make you hipster from how I understand the term. Its the attitude around it that makes someone a hipster. It's going against the grain for the sake of it.

Having spent a fair bit of time lurking around Metal threads/reviews, you tend to see that pejorative thrown out by people who are just as supercilious/iconoclastic/pretentious/superficial/contrarian as the people they're decrying all the while failing to see the irony. So basically I'm less concerned with what constitutes a hipster and just stick to hating arrogant people in general; it doesn't matter to me whether you're being a smug elitist prick about Blasphemy or Animal Collective, if you're a self-absorbed arsehole than I'd prefer not to associate with you. I prefer to judge by behaviour rather than aesthetics if I can help it I guess is what I'm saying.
