My parents are in their late 50s/early 60s and live in a rather technologically unfriendly area of the UK.
My mother, while intelligent, believes it will essentially suck her in and never let go if she uses it more than once every few months. She's fiercely intelligent and has always loved reading and discovering new things, and she believes that websites and computer programs are designed to draw people in. She also over complicates everything she does by stubbornly refusing to educate herself about this one topic, and uses an archaic free BT internet service, so that every time she uses the internet she has to go through the complicated process of running a disc, and calling to have her password reset. She basically views it all to much trouble for something she is convinced she will become addicted too.
My father, ever the pragmatist, while dyslexic and "stupid" views it as a tool like any other. He's always the first to call me and ask me to look things up online for him. My mother's attitude angers me most because of its affect on my father.
Edit : I should also mention that my mother believes ALL the old horror stories that have ever been mentioned. In her world the internet is covered by popups with hardcore porn and violence, any website that you enter your information into is going to steal it, and dangerous people lurk in every corner ready to take over your computer with their hacking skillz.
