It seems like during the 1950s many people imagined that life in 2000s onward would be full of flying cars, jetpacks, personal robots, moon vacations, underwater cities, Virtual Reality, Holograms, food pills, and so on. Why have these predictions failed to come true? What happened? Where are these kinds of technologies?

actually there were attempts to make a helicopter pack a while back. turns out having whirling blades above a soldier's head is not a good thing.

However, a human can reprogram instantly and recover.

If a auto-driver bot glitches in a repeatable way, then there's nothing you can do but watch every single car using that program crash as you desperately try to recall the cars.

Speaking as a programmer, I would sooner trust an angry sixteen-year-old fresh out of driving school before an auto-driver.

I think you seriously underestimate the rate at which software bugs occur and also the fact that computers are made by human which are faulty.
