Entertainment and, too a certain extent, art.

It may rely on what you call art and it may seem like only entertainment but when you watch a movie you may be entertained but you are also appreciating all the little things it offers. The story, the character development, and hell, even for just the pretty explosions. Do you do the same thing with video games? Of course you do. Unless you enjoy pain and playing only to slowly kill yourself, in which case, I won't judge.

Video games are made for the same reason movies are made, to entertain us. Well ok, it's mostly to make money, but entertainment is in there somewhere.

Don't post just to say that.

For gamers: Entertainment, escapism, pastime, and arguably social pastime (multiplayer, etc.)

For the designers: Money, expression of art or style (think Killer7, No More Heroes), deliver a cinematic message and or experience (Hideo fucking Kojima and MSG 4), and sometimes aspiring to achieve a vision (Peter Molyneux and Fable 2).

They used to be made as a fun demonstration of software for nerds like me; then it all became about the money.

Subsequently games got a fucking LOT less fun after that.

It's called the gaming industry because it is just that: an industry. It's there to make money. If women-friendly games are released it's because they are a new target audience, for instance.

Games and movies are a good parallel.

You have the huge studios pumping out your layman games that the general populous eat up, you can think of them as the huge hollywood studios like Time Warner, etc. They're in it for the money and the money only. Then you have the indie crews, a small group of people wanting to make something unique and artistic; be it a movie or be it a game. Most of the general population either never know about these, don't care about these or is too stupid to understand these.

Entertainment of buyers and profit of makers, mainly. But like any other artistic medium, they can be used to express oneself or make some kind of statement.

Perhaps you could say why you consider this thread to be stupid, and your post will have a reason to exist. Because at the moment all you're doing is making yourself look like an arsehole.

OT: It's all a conspiracy! First, the aliens force people to create games to draw our attention away from the real world, so they can invade!
Yeah, entertainment.

Well the reason they're made is to make money...

Their purpose, on the other hand: a purpose that goes beyond the reason developers have for making them, I believe, is to tell stories. It's different for everyone, really, but the only thing that video games really offer that wasn't offered by anything else before is interactive storytelling. And when utilized correctly, it is amazing.
