Because it killed my friend!

And by that, I mean older than me (I'm graduating) but he's still in grade ten, he doesn't have any survival skills, the ONLY TIME he ever gets off it is to sleep and go to church (He's more or less dropped out of school). That's the only time I ever see him!

An in game problem I have recently slammed into on the Anub'Arak server: The economy has turned unplayable bananas expensive. 30 gold as the starting bid price for a piece of 25th level mail leg armor is not acceptable, and there are only 2 or three items in the 20-30level range because so many people have advanced beyond that.

It seems like there aren't any non-hardcore people on the line anymore, which makes it hard to find someone to adventure with in out of the way places like "The Wetlands" a place I have gotten bogged (excuse the pun) down in for the last 6 levels because most of the quests there are hard without at least 2 or three people making a run at them. It is not to much to ask for 2 or 3 people to help me kill an encampment of Dark Iron Dwarves.

So yeah, that is my issue: I have only ever gotten to level 28 and I wish more people were like me in that regard.

As the game got older a lot of of individual creativity went out the door. The game became solely about getting gear to get more gear. The vicious cycle grew more and more prominent, and unless you had a solid circle of friends to invent methods of fun with, the "moar gear" mindset would keep the community cold.

Everything slowly lost its luster, and everything deteriorated into a meta-game. Eventually, controversy and schism were the only interesting things to pay attention to. Nowadays there are no truly heroic happenings. Everything has lost its gravity. Nothing is significant anymore. I wish I could be less vague, but unless I'm specifically asked for a list, there are just too many examples of all this to discuss.

I played it for 3 years, the reason why I hate it is the addiction. Seriously, I haven't played it for over 2 years now, and I STILL feel withdrawals from the game. STILL.

I hate it because I never see my buddy anymore since he got it.

It is deliberately designed to be addictive and exploitative of peoples' obsessive, compulsive nature and it sucks peoples souls out through their eyeballs in a way no other game/MMO does.
I 100% agree with that, I noticed i was getting sucked into it, and my mom made me quit playing it that was a good thing.

The problem with WoW is that it's designed to get people addicted. The Cracked article explained it perfectly. People get addicted because there's always one more piece of loot, and because not playing will make them feel like they're wasting 15 dollars every month, so they come back to it.

That's a fallacious comparison that assumes that people have nothing else to buy, and that they'll immediately stop wanting other games simply because they play WoW. While this is true for the hardcore, it's hardly the only way that owning the game works out for people.
The point was that playing WoW is less expensive then playing other games or even other hobbys. I don't see how you buying other games somehow makes WoW more expensive. If you pay for a WoW sub and then on top of that buy a ton of brand new games then of course you're going to be spending a lot of money, but how is that WoW's fault?

Again, unless you buy only 1 or 2 videogames a year, WoW and mmo's in general ARE cheaper to play then other videogames.
you know, the money argument is a pretty bad one i think, a game doesnt get better or worse cause it costs more, they are 2 different things imo

It's incredibly, incredibly boring.

I played it non-stop for 3 fucking weeks.
If it's so boring, then why did you play it for 3 weeks straight? That seems like an unreasonable thing to do.

Monthly payments are made for Xbox Live as well, although 3 times cheaper, you still pay for your online... unless you have a PS3.

Grinding is part of the game, if you don't like like it, don't play it, and don't bother us who do enjoy playing it.

If it's addictive and people lose their lives over it, that means that Blizzard did their job, because they're doing this to make money, and they are making a shit load of it. The only way people get that addicted to something, is if it's really good... like heroin, or crystal meth.

And as for graphics, they won't be as good as console, or high-end PC games, because it's so much bigger than those. It's mind-bogglingly huge. I can hardly get my head around how immense it is. Walking, it takes about 25 -30 minutes to walk across the Barrens, and that's about an eighth of Kalimdor, one of the islands, then Azeroth, then Northrend, and Outlands. It would take months just to explore them, nevermind do the infinite amount of quests available. And it's fucking fantasy, not a World War 3 shooter. Realism doesn't play as big a role in fantasy games.

Well thats a subjective thing. I'm not saying WoW is somehow better because of it's cost. If you don't like the game you wouldn't play it even if it was free.

Someone stated the game was too expensive to play and I'm just pointing out that it's really not any more expensive then playing other games or having other hobbys.

Casuals, only the ones that beg for everything to be available to them and bosses to be easier. I personally could care less about "hard" modes if the devs didn't give into every whim of the casuals and made bosses hard to begin with. Now don't get me wrong I was (note the past-tense) a casual but more of a hardcore casual my guild was one of the top 3 casual guild on my server because while raiding we took it seriously. So in a nutshell the "casual" casual.

-Now if they made the game hard again I would jump back in almost immediately.

It has the problem that all MMOs have for me- there's too much grind and boredom.

It's just not a game for me- as I'm sure all the things that don't interest me are things that other people look for in a game.
That and I just don't have the time for it.

The game, as a phenomenon, greatly interests me to learn about, though. It's cool to hear about the simple facts of WoW and its user base and other stats involving it. It really has become a World.

Nothing is wrong with it. But using a private sever is, because Blizzards product is being used by others for profeit, whether it be by "donations" for better stuff or just a cheaper subscription.

It's quite ugly. In fact, it's very, very ugly graphics wise. I have no idea how it's so popular.

A lot of my friends play World of Warcraft and last year I gave it a go for a few months to play with 'em but I wasn't at all impressed. Now, do realize I love Guild Wars and basically it was me complainin to my friends "Gosh, I sure this game was more like Guild Wars" but here are were my complaints.

The game is ugly. Let's not lie to ourselves. The game is ugly. Cartoony... sure. There's not much excuse for it... I mean, no crying about spilled milk, sure, the game is as it is but there are much better looking games from that time period that also run on quite reasonable computers specs. The game's ugliness is a fault, unless you happen to really like that sort of artwork. I don't get you then. I've played on a MUD for a number of years, so graphics ain't everything but if something's an eyesore then that's worse than having to use your imagination in my book. Hell, it ain't until Lich King where you don't look like a rainbow vomited on you. A couple levels in Burning Crusade, I found myself wearing black pants, blue chestplate, red gloves, and green shoulder pads.
(full post = #104)
I enjoyed your post and thought it was funny how we seem to be opposites when it comes to GW and WoW. I believe the issue I take up with gw is that you commit to 8 skills before leaving a town which have to be designed with a strategy in mind or you'll fail. You then approach pretty much every mob with this pre-determined strategy and fight them all the exact same way. Now i know that WoW's combat isn't any better, it all ends up being a DPS race, but at least i have the options to change my strategy and adapt on the fly to best kill the enemy i'm fighting now. There may not be much freedom but i value the ability to change tactic during combat more than i value having many different possible tactics that become static when in use.

Anyway, i'd like to say that i can't agree with your first argument about how the game is ugly... ok it is, graphics are quite horrible and outdated, HOWEVER i disagree with your argument that it matters. I really don't care how pretty a game looks (and some of the scenes in GW are freaken beautiful) i care about how it plays. Honestly i feel that graphics come secondary to mechanics in the majority of cases, mainly because the majority of games cannot think of something creative to do with their graphics. What I mean is that unless the graphics directly affect the game play then they do not matter to me, and in GW and WoW, they're just eye-candy. I will admit though, that there seem to be different types of gamers who value their graphics more than others, i am not one of them.

The rest of your points though, i agree with, gear should not be your motivation, it simply creates barriers between players who then cannot participate in raids (because gear ends up being more valuable than skill or even a willingness to learn the fight), and find themselves no better than fodder during PvP.

It can easily take over your life unless you exercise some self-discipline.

The fact that its so damn easy now means that there simply isn't enough end-game content - there is, technically a lot, BUT you can zoom through most of it now with little effort.

Also, Deathknights.
whats wrong with DK's? SAD FACE.

OT: I play it again but I am not a no life. I just like always getting good shit. I hate the grind and I just said fuck to my warlock when I got WOTLK and used the DK.
