It would be X [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/326.166262], followed by XIII [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.203989-Sassafrass-Reviews-Final-Fantasy-13-English-360-and-a-small-extra], VII and X-2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.291553-Sassafrass-Reviews-Final-Fantasy-X-2], in that order. VIII and IX I did play but didn't finish so I can't say and I haven't touched any of the others really. :p

VII, followed closely by Tactics. They are my number 1 and 3 favourite games respectively. IX rounds out my top 5 and X rounds out my top 15.

Very recently I've been playing through 9, and I've enjoyed it a lot more than most of the FF games I played. I've played 3/6, 7, 8 and 10 before, so I'm not entirely knowledgable about the rest of the series, but it's the only 3D one I've played that felt like the upgrade from 2d to 3d the series needed, unlike 7 and 8 which changed the style of both graphics, story and gameplay too much for me to consider them Final Fantasy games.

Problem with 7: Cloud weilds a sword bigger than him and PHEONIX DOWN THE FUCKING ***** WHO DIED

8: Highly hot-swappable characters, giving them little uniqueness apart from the overbloated, angsty teen storylines they each possessed and their specials they can dish out ad-nauseum when they have low health.

10: Vooooooooice actiiiiiiiiiiing.

Nine just seems to have got it right for me. Zidane actually looks like he's heaving the weight of his dual-bladed 'thief swords' in both attacks and his victory stance. The story has seemed like an extension of various fairy tail stories, the main one being a distressed princess rescued by the prince stories. My only problem with it is Quina... Fucking Quina... Although he/she was awesome in battle!

I only have two, XIII and Echoes of Time. EoT was good and had a nice story, as XIII, I still need to finish it. That's, however, gonna take a while because school just started for me.

X with VIII following VERY close behind.
VII would be next.
Crisis Core and XII would be after that.
X-2 is last.

XIII doesn't even make the cut for being on the list, it was that disappointing.

As for the others, I've only played the intro section to IX and Dissidia. I found IX very entertaining and Dissidia to have very average combat that I didn't really care about.

And to you above me and most likely below my post.....

AGAIN!!!!! For the MILLIONTH time. Phoenix Down: "REVIVES FROM KO"

KO = KNOCKED OUT

KNOCKED OUT = UNCONSCIOUS

SHE IS DEAD. DEATH IS VASTLY DIFFERENT TO UNCONSCIOUS.

The sooner you people get this through your THICK (extremely thick) skulls the better!

That is all.......

VI: Easily one of my favorite SNES rpgs
Tactics Advanced: My childhood
VII: I didn't like it very much, but I actually beat it, so I guess I liked it more than the others.

Toss up for me between 7 and 9. 7 might be pure nostalgia factor and the fact that it was my first Final Fantasy, and the first RPG I spent significant time playing. But, sometimes I think 9 was a better game as a whole.

VI, my favorite of the series and a SNES classic. Followed by X and XII (which seems to be the smallest minority).

VI was my first FF game and I loved it to pieces, too bad I don't have it anymore....

XIII is my other favorite, I liked it well enough and I played the hell out of it.

VIII is my favourite closely followed by X.

VIII was just a great story and replayable many times.

X Had a tonne of things to do and kept me entertained for hundreds of hours on single playthroughs.

go play 9, it was good. i got that game for x-mas that year and was one of my favorite games. was being because i have this tendency of lossing interest in things after i beat them, seen them etc... has a good sound track and i liked it better than 8. it had that old ff feel about it before 8, 10, and the others started their quest to futurize the games.

It's fun to make fun of and how did one stab kill her, she's taken multiple stabs, set on fire, frozen, shot at point blank range and number of other things and it takes like 10+ of those to knock her out and then suddenly she gets killed with one blow. Truthfully it doesn't really bother me I have bigger complaints then that for the game, still like it though.

If for my favorites 9-12-7-Crystal Chronicles-10-6-13-legends, I haven't played the rest.

I've only played 4 on my GBA and 7 on my PS3. Of the two, I like 4 a lot more. I was disappointed by the fact that you can only have 3 people in your party at a time in 7.

Never played the S/NES releases or XII. Really need to get around to doing that (after I play through Shin Megami Tensei, Live-a-Live, and so much else...)

Anyway, my preferences:

IX>VII>X=XIII

Rating X and XIII just about even. Neither had particularly good plots, but XIII had an intriguing combat system and X was far better at hiding its strings. Every other flaw or positive note about either game has a corresponding one in the other (both have awful male characters, for instance). To be honest, I'd put Tactics on the level of FFIX (if not higher) if I didn't consider it cheating. Too different from the main series.

For the record, FFVII isn't overrated. All the media surrounding that game and setting have indubitably soured people on Cloud and the gang, but if you look at the game and the game only, it's nearly perfect. What people seem to forget about it is that it was every bit as comical and cheery as the other installments. Sure, there are some dark and/or unnecessarily melodramatic and overbearing moments, but it's hardly "emo" the whole way like XIII was[footnote]Not entirely accurate, but it had some awful pacing and no good relief. Even VIII had some comic interludes and the occasional charming character, despite being largely terrible...[/footnote].

Instead, it's fairly inventive fantasy (no orcs/undead/orcs with funny names) told in a steampunk setting with some minor sci-fi elements. While the combat is old hat now, I remember having loads of fun with it back in the day. [small]Also, Tifa[/small].

But IX is still better. That's not a point against VII, IX is better than a great deal of things. It's just so damned charming. Everything in the game is beautifully crafted to deliver a simple story with a surprising amount of depth and care. Even when extremely common RPG tropes materialized, they fleshed it out enough and played it confidently enough for it to work.

Granted, the character designs are a little weird. Not bad, just weird. Fortunately, the graphics had advanced to a point where the 3D models didn't look (as) ridiculous anymore.

[sub]I also don't get the hate for characters like Yuffie or Quina. They're festive! They're not as silly as Vincent! Phoenix Down cures KO, not death![/sub]

Most everything before X was enjoyable (VIII less so), with VI taking a commanding lead. Everything X and beyond...well, let's just say they weren't my cup of tea. Because I don't think warm piss makes for good tea...
