Ok, so I have a friend who has recently picked up a computer that can actually run something more than Civ3, and is looking to broaden her horizon a little.

The last FPS she played was Redneck Rampage back in the days when cooling your GPU with LN2 was seen as "excessive" and not "necessary to run Crysis at playable framerate".

So, my question is which FPS would you recommend for someone relatively new to the genre - I am looking for something with forgiving mechanics but equally a good story.

My obvious standout ones are something like Half Life 2 which obviously has a superb story and is first class representation of the genre, but is it really the FPS that you would start someone off with?

My other option was something like Halo (the first one) which I think could be more forgiving in the gameplay - aiming with what are effectively tracer rounds using the plasma rifle while you get used to mousing and the Master Chief's shield providing a cushion so that mistakes aren't so heavily punished (it's as powerful as an Overshield if you set the game to Easy) .

My other option was Fallout: New Vegas since the story is excellent and you can practice FPS aiming but have the backup of the VATS system to help you out (and later, your companions, although they can be *too* helpful and do all the work before you've unholstered your gun sometimes), and the RPG element of the game is more familiar to her (as a former D&D player/board game geek etc).

I should mention the system in question is a Macbook Pro 13" (2.3Gig Core i5, HD3000 GPU) running OS X but also can dual boot Windows, so we're looking for things that will run on that sort of hardware. Not bleeding edge obviously, especially the built in GPU, but it's respectable for a fair few games, especially with the details lowered).

What would you suggest?

Start with going up against AI.

Bioshock or Fallout 3 is a start.

Then move up the list.

Halo is a great game to begin to master for FPS style. (And because its awesome)

My first FPSs were Halo. If I was able to beat them on Normal all those years ago, it must've taught me something about FPSs.

The first Halo. It's where I started myself. Because of the regenerating shields, you don't always have to hunt for medpacks unless your health drops really low, and for the most part ammo is easy to come by. AND I do believe it runs on a Mac.

I'd forgot about vehicle control! That's another benefit to Halo it seems.

Yeah, you could do a lot worse than Half-Life 2. I'd start there. Any of the Halo games would also be good for a newbie, since they're generally highly polished and the barrier of entry is low.

My first was also halo 1 for PC. (Gets flashbacks) Good times.
It did run on a Mac, but I do believe they stopped supporting it. But it should run on yours, even though running an OS on top of another OS is pure evil, it doesn't take much to run on low settings.

Seriously though, go with Halo. The first Halo is pretty good in terms of story, and is easy to pick up and play without too much difficulty, especially on easy.

Another choice would be something like Left4Dead, especially if your friend likes zombies. It's good for newbies because the enemies don't shoot back at you, and there's tons of enemies on screen so you really get to practice your aim. Especially when playing on easy, just tell her to go slow, and try as much as possible not to miss. This is even better with something like the Romero mod which makes it so that zombies can only be killed by headshot, but they move slowly. Left4Dead will really teach her how to prioritize targets (special infected), and work as a team without shooting each other. The added benefit is that you can be right there playing with her in coop and showing her the ropes.

start off with Team Fortress 2 or Combat Arms. both are free and fun to play. combat arms can get a bit old though. TF2 is MASSIVE fun, and gets very addicting. other than that, i'd go with Half Life 2, or Counter Strike: Source.

Half-Life 1
Call of Duty 1
Serious Sam 1
Left 4 Dead 1

They all represent different types of FPS games without being too bloated by superfluous mechanics. They're all very simple games.

Half-Life for story.
Call of Duty for modern shooters.
Serious Sam for classic shooters.
Left 4 Dead for co-op.

You can find each on Steam. The game with the highest specs is L4D.

If you want to try out tactical shooters, consider Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30. It's Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six lite.

I'd say Halo would be good.

But not Left4Dead. I started someone on it and they got too freaked out to keep playing.

I'd suggest DOOM 1 or 2 for a few reasons.

The main being it simplifies aiming. You don't have to aim up or down, the game vertically aims for you. Also, the difficulty is scalable. The easiest difficulty is soft, even by old school standards. Lastly, the game is a lot of fun even compared to today's graphically superior heavyweights like Call of Duty or Halo.

FPS isn't a hard genre to pick up on. Just get any of the recent highly rated FPS's. I'd recommend Bioshock, Crysis 1 and Warhead, F.E.A.R. 1 (it's older but a lot of fun), CoD4, Team Fortress 2, Half Life 1, 2 and Half Life 2 Episodes 1 and 2, STALKER, Deus Ex: Human Revolution (although it's more of a stealth RPG, but it doesn't have to be if you want to shoot everyone).

Up until recently I hated the FPS genre as a whole. Would refuse to play any of them just out of principal. The game that changed my mind?

My First FPS was actually Left 4 Dead. My man had helped me through the levels on easy...After that I had played the first three Halo games. I would try those...

These are all some excellent suggestions, including ones I hadn't even considered.

Halo does indeed have a Mac-native version - I own it, so I guess I'll be lending that to her as a starting point.
