I'll elaborate a little more.

On Dawn of War 1. Me and a few mates of mine came up with a Time Attack way of playing the game. We would just defend one point of the map, on the hardest difficulty setting until we died. Whoever lasted the longest, would essentially win.

Another example is with Dragon Ball Raging Blast. The first person to the final transformation was the only one who could use their ultimate attack.

So what different ways of playing a game have you came up with?

Getting the "Paci-Fist" achievement for the XBLA version of Perfect Dark prompted me to try playing through the entire game using only my fists. It's surprisingly fun dodging and weaving around enemy fire to close the distance and lay the smack down on some guards. It makes me wonder why more first person games don't go with the "martial arts master vs. goons with guns" approach.

My dad isn't really a gamer, but I got him interested in a few titles over the years. When it was time for me to move out I left some of his favorite games back at their place. Since then he's come up with some interesting rules to spruce things up a bit. For example, in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 he plays as the Rebels in order to protect their female sniper character. He'll find an AI-controlled one and tell it to follow him. From then on out he has to ensure that she stays safe. If she dies for any reason, then he's "lost" the game and has to start over.

Keeping the royal lineage pure in Total War: Medieval 2 and altering my foreign policy and aggressiveness based on the personality of my king. Can lead to some interesting games when your lineage takes a nasty turn and some less than desirable traits start getting handed down through the generations. And turns the game into more of a RPG/Simulation than just a pure exercise in RTS brute force.

A New Vegas playthrough, as Saxton Hale (only your fists, no other weapons, inlcuding brass knuckles or power fists). Taking Nelson from the Legion with your BARE DAMNED HANDS is very satisfying.

I wish there were mods available that gave you tan, kahki colored shorts along with boots and a bare upper chest. Just put on a cowboy hat and then you are good to go. If I had any knowledge of how to make it I'd do it in a heartbeat.

A few days ago, my friend and I were both talking on skype, and found out that we were both having an urge to play Fallout 3. My friend then suggested the idea that we both start new characters and see which of us could complete the main questline first. So, it's sort of like a race to the finish deal.

Turning single player games on the Wii and PC into multiplayer games by splitting control. One person gets the wiimote/mouse and the other person gets the nunchuck/keyboard.

WAAAAYYY back in the day, I found a way to make Alex Kidd in Miracle World much more interesting. For those that don't know, it was like a pre-cursor to Mario platformers I think. Anyway, very similar reasoning applies: Try to get through it killing no monsters....

Making up my own backstory.
Way back when going through the Halo: Combat Evolved Campaign, me and a friend applied our own story about a pair of Super Soldier mercenaries, which I carried on doing in games like GTA and Splinter Cell. So far my guy has lived through the Crusades, acquired a time altering sword that has let him fight through the American Civil War, both World Wars, The Cold War (during which time he faced off against his old mentor while stopping a nuclear equipped Soviet Tank) and has even become a Spector in the far, far future.
May sound sad, but I would deny that it makes gaming a lot more interesting and immersive (until a dead body starts glitching out, which I attribute to my guy fucking with the time stream)

Tying in with my last point is to forgo fast travel in games like Fallout 3. Just take your time and explore a little.

A friend and I played a few hours of a runthrough of Fallout: New Vegas in which every single person we found we had to kill. That was our rule. Went surprisingly well, all things considered.

That, or playing worms 2 with custom weapon damages and blasts. Nerfing things and bumping things caused much hilarity when trying to play normally, especially against level 5 AIs!

To get my mileage out of Haze, I made games where it was me vs 15 other bots. Despite the fact Haze's AI was probably written on the back of a used napkin, it was still loads of fun. Really intense at points too.

I still maintain it's the only way to play the game.

Escape to mexico in saints row 2
You and a buddy in co-op on the hardest difficulty.
You have to head to the northernmost point on the map and gain 5 star wanted level.
You must then hijack a bear and make it to the airport. You are only allowed to use bears so if it blows up get a new one, first one to make it to a plane and take off wins.
Difficulties are the FBI vans actually win in a head on collision with your bear. And the helicopters will blow most planes off the runway.
Many laughs can be had :)

I'm currently trying to play through Dark Souls without throwing my controller out the window... It's a surprisingly difficult self imposed challenge really.

Apart from that I roleplay in Fallout NV, the last character i made was an absolute misanthrope. Y'know when you're really annoyed at something so you save and wipe out the entire room before reloading? That was my entire playthrough... Except there was no reloading

What's that guys at Primm? You want to live? WELL YOU SHOULD HAVE LET ME STEAL ALL YOUR GUNS THEN!

Bizarrely, also Perfect Dark. But for the N64.
In the Combat Simulator (the fancy name for multiplayer) set all six weapon slots to only spawn shotguns, then add 8 simulants, all set to be PeaceSims.
The PeaceSims never use guns and their only objective is to disarm you. So you have 8 simulants all racing to be the first to clock you on your head-piece and make off with your shotgun. Unless you can gun them all down in time, which given the poor reload speed of the shotgun, isn't as easy as it sounds.

At the moment I'm going through Fallout 3 armed only with a kitchen knife. It'll be interesting should I choose to venture into Old Olney.

I've also done a low level playthrough of FF8. Thankfully I was obsessed with the card game, so I ended up being able to refine them into obscene amounts of stat junctioning spells. It took a long time, though.

I mostly play jrpgs , i usually ( the second time around ) give myself a handicap to make the game harder . For example , final fantasy 7 i did a original weapon run. Everyone used the weapon they staryed with from start to finish . Legend of legaia , i did a unarmed run ( didn't use any weapons) i actually think this made my rasuru ( left hand) stronger , not sure though. I also did a 3 heart run in zelda games . Plasma cutter only run in dead space 1 and 2 (although i did this on my first playthrough with both and on survivalist mode which is a step over normal ). As you can see , for me challenge is fun , so i try to challenge myself as much as possible . I also did a melee only run in FF1 ( no white or black or red mages ), i also did a no melee run ( magic only , not nearly a difficult, but fun none the less).
