Silence in the Library. I slept for two weeks with a light on. The first week I tossed my sheet off my bed. Good thing it was summer.

For me it was Aliens - when I was 6 or something. Scared the living crap out of me, I couldn't even go to the bathroom myself. Yeah Nightmare on Elm Street as well, gee I should really watch that again someday.

For games, I think the first one that really scared me was Resident Evil 2, playing alone at night. Oh yeah, and System Shock 2. Mainly the noises the cyborg/mutants make, goddamn they were....unsettling.

Mel Gibson "Signs" movie. Had to sleep for about a month with the lights on after that. I was 8.
Wow, haha, same. :p

I couldn't deal with aliens at all as a kid, I don't know why.
The worst one was Mr Burns as the alien in The Simpsons, that episode scared me so fucking much, and I went into seizures at the sound of the X-files music basically.

I'm over it in films and tv (still don't watch that episode to be safe), but I reckon if real aliens landed now I might possibly kill myself out of fear, even if they're peaceful :/
Yeah, I HATE movies about aliens. Not the black dribbly acid filled ones from the Alien movies. The ones about pale gaunt naked human shaped aliens with big heads and empty dead black eyes and no capacity for compassion or mercy. UGH.

For anyone freaked out by the idea of aliens, do not under ANY circumstances watch "the fourth kind." It is kind of set up like a documentary with supposed re-enactments of people's encounters with aliens and it just makes the irrational part of your brain believe that everything in that movie might actually have happened.

You never see them, just audio recordings, just endless nightmare fuel...["that..that's not a snowy owl looking at me from outside...YEAAARG WHAT ARE THOSE THINGS!! HONEY GET UP, THEY'RE IN OUR ROOM! *deep horrifying alien speak and sounds of furniture crashing etc* HONEY, WHY WON'T YOU WAKE UP!? *panicked sobbing drowned out by metallic grinding sound* YEEEEAAAAARG!! *abducted*"]

I just can't handle that shit.

UGH. I am totally with you on the kill myself if aliens actually are real and touch down on earth.

Yeah, that's exactly the same as me, it was only the traditional 'Greys' aliens I didn't like. And that film is the reason I hate and fear barn owls with a passion.

Clock Tower on SNES was one game that I played as a kid, and I remember some bright, lighted nights from my childhood. Also, the book Darlah 172, made me afraid of the moon. Just looking at the moonlight was enough to send me under the bed.

Pretty much every Stephen King book I read between the ages 13 and 16. Also, the flash game Exmortis. Scared me more than any other game, Amnesia included.

The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
Damn you and your brilliant atmospheric piece of literature, Lovecraft! That book had me terrified for a month, I couldn't sleep with open windows and it was a horribly hot summer...

The Ring, saw that at a midnight showing when it first came out. I was quite young and it scared the ever loving crap out of me. I unplugged my TV the first few nights after seeing it.

Has anyone read the graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth? Well, the drawings, the font that was used for each character, and the general creepiness to it all combined to scare the bejeezus out of me. That book messed with my head. The way the Joker looks....eugh. Sooo creepy.

EDIT:

I'm surprised by the lack of forums posts about Amnesia and the Penumbra series scaring the shit out of people. I guess it's just general knowledge that those games have terrified anyone who has played them. =P
