Any Escapist has by now seen this advertisement by Sony. Many would agree it strikes a chord with them.

I have to ask you, fellow Escapists, what characters would be drinking to your name? Feel free to pick up to five that stick most to your mind, and share a short reason why they made a difference in your gaming life.

Here are five of mine:
1. Gordon Freeman - Let me explore through his eyes a cold war missile complex converted into a massive lab, defied a totalitarian system, and drove a badass buggy and airboat.
2. Edison Trent - Explored new star systems, participated in interstellar commerce, and fought against an alien security organism gone wrong.
3. Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad - Explored the cities of the crusades, Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem, in a struggle between forces that an ordinary person would never see. Possible by proxy through the mind of Desmond Miles, using his genetic memory.
4. Steve - Reminded me how fun it is to take a world, and recreate it however I could with what materials were available.
5. Maximillian - A man whose stature I share, who I can experience the sheer fun of taking over the world through blackmail and larceny with.

Geralt of Rivia, from both the Witcher and The Witcher 2. I helped him save Temeria twice, with much merriment along the way

Kyle Katarn - Through him I got to feel like a Jedi. I got to grow in the Force and experience some of what the galaxy has to offer.

Commander Shepard - His decisions were my decisions and they helped shape the events of a galaxy. I met knew people of different races and whom I share many great, though sometimes sad, experiences.

Random stormtrooper #2187 - Together we crushed the Rebellion and brought order to the galaxy. No matter where we fought, be it in space or on ground of some new world, I knew we would be victorious.

Gage Blackwood - I helped him uncover the truth about the human race and time travel while stopping a potential war between two alien species. Traveling through time looking for clues and blending into each time period brought about many great experiences.

Here's five I would have that didn't get a play in the ad:

FemShep: Pulled my ass out of the fire, right after we dived right in.

Garuda 1 (Ace Combat 6): Brought down a flying carrier and four gun platforms, all while dodging fire from that nation's top aces.

Sam Fisher: Helped me take on a PMC and the NSA determined to destroy my country, with a single pistol.

Nico Belek: He provided more help to me than my cousin could ever dream of mustering.

and Jackie Estacado (The Darkness): He made me embrace the Darkness without being shackled to it.

Ryu Hayabusa: I got him through the Xbox Ninja Gaiden without dying once.
Ibuki(SSFIV-SF3: TSO): I made her the star of the show against spamming assholes.
Yuri Lowell: Taking down the Radiant Winged One solo without taking a hit.(4th attempt)
Ramirez(MW2): Saved his iss so he could be asked to do even more impossible things. 'Ramirez! Take down that Tank with your toothbrush!'
Nathan Drake: He's not dead yet thanks to me.

Girraga - WoW druid. Months worth of playtime, first experience as a healer, lots of fun moments and [in-gane] world saving from raiding

Diablo II barbarian built around the skill Warcry - I love wacky builds and rarely used skills. This is the character that started it all.

The Jedi Exile (KotOR II) - The most invested I've been in a character's decisions.

My dwarf fighter Bhaalspawn - First RPG

Batman - He's the god damn Batman! (The character I've been most immersed in).

Link: Out of the 9 Zelda games I've played, I've beaten 7 of them. If nothing else, I've beaten the two NES Zelda games. Those alone are worth a toast in my honor

Master Chief: I played through and beat the trilogy, Halo 2 being the only one I haven't finished on Legendary yet.

Commander Shepard: For good or ill, man or woman, I've beaten ME1 and 2. Technically, there would be 2 Sheps here drinking, a Paragon Male and a Renegade female. I still want to count this as one though

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of all of their games, I've only beaten their best one, Turtles in Time. I've beaten Re-Shelled too but for that, I'd say they owe me a drink...

Mario: Not only have I helped him beat Bowser in Super Mario Brothers and World, He wouldn't have made it that far if I hadn't guided Yoshi through the kingdom when Mario was a baby...an annoying ass Baby...little bastard owes me a drink.

A few:

Isaac Clarke, because I had 90% less deaths than the average player on my first playthrough :)

Sam Fisher, because I'm a freaking ghost in most Splinter Cell games, hand-to-hand as much as possible, like a bawse.

Kyle Katarn, because those Jedi Knight games were THE shite!

Otacon in MGS2, because I always choose bros before hoes. (besides, magic stealth cloak vs ammo? In a stealth game? Are you kidding me?! choice is obvious)

Steampunk Mr Foster.

For laying waste to the hordes of freaks attacking London in style, shotgun in hand and snarky remarks on his lips. Especially the chainsaw-wielding scrakes. Oh yes, they get what's coming to them.

Hmm...this is a toughy, but I will try my best!

Ezio Auditore da Firenze- For going along your journey into a world of questions that need answers that are in short supply. For visiting places in time that I would kill to be in, and for sharing your pain in the loss of your father and brothers, and helping to go after those people and show them no mercy.

Heather Mason- For experiencing the same terrors and horrors, and sleepless nights, that you had to experience to get to the truth, no matter how painful. And show that ***** Claudia who's boss!

Cole McGrath- Running and jumping along side you to find what the hell happened to your world and why you had to get those powers. As well as showing me what true power can do in the right hands (ba dum tish!) as well as the wrong ones.

Kratos- Reminding me how awesome Greek mythology is and how much fun it can be running around that time of Grecian lore. Showing me what revenge can do to someone and how sometimes it can never be enough, no matter how many Minotaurs you murder!

Lightning- When shit got real, you took action and kicked some ass, even if it meant your downfall. Taking on creatures bigger and scarier than I've ever dreamed, and winning.

Commander Sheppard - I played the hell out of both games and to this day I haven't let anyone die in ME 2.

Gordon Freeman - this is actually me toasting him for allowing me to see such an incredible world and meet so many great characters.

Revan - The first game I ever went overboard on, playing 80+ hours easily on my first playthrough and even more on later runs. The game that made me realize how amazing Bioware is.

Ratchet and Clank - I've seen these guys through a lot and I'm considering dropping the outragous amount of money to but a PS3 just so I can play in their universe more.

The Lone Wanderer (fallout 3) - my first Fallout game and the one that made me go back and play the others. I put so much time into traversing the wastes, meeting strange people, and stealing everything they own. Thank god Bethesda released Broken Steel to make the end of your story a worthy conclusion.

Sora and Riku - I've been with them through everything. We've gone to many worlds (with wonderful memories for me) and fought the darkness, and in the end we saved each other. Though they're too young to drink, we'd toast those awesome adventures.

Lara Croft - Though we've had our struggles in the past, Lara and I have always saved the world. She's one of my greatest aspirations. I can't wait to fight for survival with her in the next installment.

Ezio Auditore - One of the greater examples of a character changed and matured by the world around him, Ezio showed me a world of countless possibilities. I'll be sticking with him until the end.

The Hero of Oblivion - Thanks, my Oblivion character, for showing me a world I will never forget.

Heather Mason - The most realistic character I know, Heather and I went through hell and back (or at least, Silent Hill) to avenge the first character to one of my favourite franchises. She taught me a lot about one's identity and gave me a positive outlook on female characters in games.

Sorry if that was a little melodramatic, but that video put me in that kind of mood. :D

Killing Floor. Think Left 4 Dead, but instead of having to reach an objective and escape, you instead have to fight off 10 waves of enemies and then defeat a boss in an 11th wave. Most people that play it seem to end up putting maybe 40 hours into it at most, whilst those few of us that enjoy it immensely rack up hundreds of hours within a few months.

The Warden: For fighting against impossible odds to end Ferelden's blight, losing her family, finding new friends and falling in love with a prince along the way.

Cloud Strife: For showing me just what a fantasy world could really be like, and how sometimes a hero isn't what or who you think he is. And for introducing me to Vincent Valentine, on who my crush is now approaching 15 years with no sign of abating.

Kratos: For kicking the stuffing out of ancient mythology.

Ezio Auditore: For (almost) single-handedly taking on the Borgia and Templars and showing them just who was boss. Never losing his humanity while he did it. And for being just that little bit of a ladies man. And having that voice. Rawr. (I took a holiday to Rome earlier this year, and spent most of the time going "Ezio climbed this!")

FemShep: For letting me take on the galaxy and show just what she's capable of when her back's against the wall.

Oh. I know Killing Floor, I was just hoping that you were talking about some awesome Steampunk RPG set in Victorian London or something. But it's Killing Floor. Ah well, can't have everything.
