I remember powering through the last part of the original Red Faction through gritted teeth. I had begun to really hate the game, but wanted to finish it out of pure stubbornness. As soon as the ending cutscene played, I popped it out of the PS2 and took it back to the game store to trade it in, the only game I have ever traded in. They gave me 98 cents for it.

WoW. I always have fun with the new content obviously but when it all gets cleared in a month or two and you could give a shit about gear you lose interest very quickly.

final fantasy 12. that game was horrible (broken combat system, nonexistent story, zero character development) but my friend bet me that i would never finish it because it was so bad. i showed him wrong...one of the few cases where i was both the winner and the loser

Nothing really.
When I stop having fun(even for just the individual play session), I quit.
Yup. Thread solved in the first reply.
Anyone else is just doing it wrong.
There is at least one exception. Grinding your skills so that you unlock the better content of the game. Other than that I don't tolerate a game when it isn't fun anymore.

Aside from grinding in RPG:s or being really close to the end and just forging on despite losing the fun I usually stop playing if it's no fun (case in point, just 15 minutes ago I decided to stop playing Ni no Kuni after playing it for about 10 hours, it just wasn't very fun).

However, there is one game I ALWAYS play despite it often being more frustrating than fun... Pro Evolution Soccer. It's one of those love-hate relationships I just can't do without.

Dragon Age: Origins

Started playing. Got bored. Continued playing anyway as I was less than a tenth of the way through the chuffing thing. Got bored and fed up with the whole experience. Had a break for a few months. Started playing again out of a sense of guilt. Started having fun again. Got bored again... *rinse repeat until end of first playthrough*

Assassin's Creed (series).

If I hadn't purchased II, IIb & IIc at the same time before starting the first one, I wouldn't have continued past Altair. My fault for buying games when they're cheap before really finishing what I already have. I'm still working through IIb. At this point, I just want to get my money's worth and find out how the damn story ends.

Oblivion.

My awe and appreciation of Morrowind made Oblivion a no brainer to buy when it first came out on PC. I spent the better part of ten years playing Morrowind and only stopped meandering about when Skyrim was announced. I thought that I should at least finish III so that I can finish IV so that I could play Skyrim when it came out. Admittedly, it may have been a "pig is full, meal is sour" development, but I couldn't wait to finish Oblivion. I essentially finished it as a level 5 Dunmer, ignoring all the side quests. 54 hours later, I was glad to turn it off. Didn't even try the Knights or Shivering Isles expansion. I can't put my finger on why I didn't enjoy the game. I do know that it has made me hesitant to start up Skyrim, even though it sits on the shelf waiting for me.

The whole Mass Effect Series. I replayed the original Mass Effect around 3 times. The first two were opposites so the choices were different and the third playthrough was to get my choices for ME2. The game got boring after the first vehicle section on BDTS DLC. I put that third playthorugh off for a week then came back and finished the playthrough. I replayed ME 2 around 4 times, not actually exaggerating, and I'm on my 5th playthrough now. It giot boring after my 2nd playthrough but I still wanted to see all the content. Finally ME3. Only played it twice. First played it with a default Shepard as when ME3 came out I didn't have ME2 for PS3 yet, and then I played it again with my ME2 choices. So yeah around 250 hours worth of Mass Effect playthroughs. And also Skyrim. Oblivion was a true gem add to that the SI expansion and it was amazing. I will say it here Oblivion is better than Skyrim. I might be biased as Oblivion was my first open world RPG in which I put around 150 hours. But I simply loved the idea of breaking into peoples houses at night and kill them. Skyrim was some more of the same with better graphics but I already had my fill with Oblivion. Still clocked 80 hours in Skyrim.

Recently I purchased and beat Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and ended up 100%-ing the game in maybe 3 days. I love me some Ratchet and Clank, which is why I'm playing through and 100%-ing the HD collection haha.

La Noir, it stopped being fun after the homicide bit of the game. Actually it stopped being fun before that when the game decided to ask you to play a guessing game as to where you were supposed to go next when you hadn't been there because you hadn't had to.

Everything after that was dull, the end bit was dumb, the guy basically goes, "Hmmmm, me using this gun is far too easy, I'll use this flamethrower from now on" just to add artificial difficulty to the end of the game. I basically played to the end because I could, I just wish I'd stopped after homicide.
I'm surprised you made it to the end, once the guessing games started I pretty much got bored and gave up.

OT: I guess Skyrim, once you complete the short main story quest it just all seems a bit pointless.

Metroid Other M

It was shit, there's people who say it's good for some reason or another but I honestly think they're mental. The gameplay wasn't even fun or interesting, it was just so bland and any moments of interest were shot down by the fact you can regen your HP and missiles with no cost or worry.

Why did I do it? Well I spent 50 bucks on a game I knew was going to be bad, but friends said it was gonna be great. I wanted it to be good, but it was so bad and I wanted to get my money out of it before I sold it. (made 38 of it back)

Far Cry 2, because "Fuck you, game, you will not beat me!"
But seriously those driving distances were anoying as hell.
This, so hard. Being shot at everywhere I went became irritating after about ten minutes, but I refused to let the game win.

Well, unfortunately, trophies are my crack, so... most games..?

I am trying not to be so obsessed with trophies (with varying degrees of success) but I generally hit this point with most games. Especially games with grindy trohpies.

Take the floor Final Fantasy XIII. Christ in a handcart. Farming for that treasure hunter trophy went beyond fun or rationalisation. I must have killed that Eden Adaman well over a hundred times, so much so that I had to put myself into a state of higher consciousness to make it through.

Shadow of the Colussus I played long after I stopped having fun with it (so pretty much after the first five minutes.) God of War, I played so long after I stopped having fun - by playing the sequels.

Conversely, I actually did stop playing Oblivion when it was no longer fun. About five hours in.

Runescape. I played it for about 6 months and after 2 weeks straight of harvesting cows for leather, meat and bones I realised that I was just grinding my time away and there was no fun to be had. Fighting monsters was cool, but grinding all the other skills was just boring.

On a related note, I have put well over 1000 hours into Minecraft since Christmas when I bought it, and I still keep finding fun things to do.

Diablo 2. One or two Baal runs was fun, but if I started to get bored, I was compelled to keep going or run Mephisto until I got a somewhat interesting drop. That can take a while.
