Sorry it took me so long to respond - after a few minutes of no responses I went off to do some reading and got distracted. But very interesting stuff so far.
Sorry about all the confusion.. lemme clear that up:

What qualifies a console shooter? Would Left 4 Dead count?
By console shooter I suppose I meant any "traditional" shooting game on consoles. That might be a very loose term, but in general that would mean a game with a campaign, most likely some sort of multiplayer, and of course, shooting as the primary means of defeating enemies. (Left 4 Dead wouldn't count for a different reason - see the last part of my post.) But Portal on the other hand, I wouldn't count. Don't get me wrong, I love Portal; but it's fundamentally different from the other games listed above, and I wanted a focus on these sort of games.
Edit: Just to clarify, are we talking "the best" (whatever that means) or "my favourite"?
Another good question. I meant which one you liked the most, really, but I wanted some sort of objective reasoning behind that which is why I added the 'or best' part. As in, I don't want responses along the lines of "KILLZONE 2 BECUZ ITS ON PS3 WHICH IS TEH BEST!!1", if that makes sense.

Isn't half-life two in the generation of the original xbox? That's where I first played it. Now with the orange box I realize they did have to cut bits (in some cases large bits) out of levels but it still played just fine on the xbox.
Yes, I did not include Half-Life 2 or anything from the Orange Box. Half-Life 2, as good as it was, is a port of a last gen game (and a PC game, but I digress), so even though it was released on a disc specifically for the 360, I would not count it.

Console means designed for console. If its a port of a PC game, doesn't count. So that nullifies Portal (which is a puzzle game anyway), Bioshock, TF2 and Left 4 Dead.
Finally, I would generally agree with this post. I didn't realize Left 4 Dead was a port, so I originally might have let it slide, but Team Fortress, etc are
PC games that you happen to be able to play on consoles; not console games.
