There have been a few, all for different reasons.

The first three that came to mind were Metroid Prime, the Halo franchise, and Dead Space.

Halo because I just love how slick it all is. It's not really a groundbreaking FPS HUD, especially these days, but it provides all of the information you might want to know in clear, concise manners. Plus, the fact that they took the effort to make it emulate the Spartan helmet is just that extra bit of detail that I really appreciate.

Same thing with Metroid Prime. In FPS games I like feeling like my character isn't just a floating camera, and both of those games do a pretty good job of it. Also, dat map.

As for Dead Space, it does with its HUD what many other games only wish they could do. Everything feels very natural and purposeful, and feels thematically consistent with the world we're presented. It's the half-way point between having no HUD at all (which very few games admittedly do) and having a really obvious, "game-y" HUD (which most games tend to do).

hmmn, I like quite a lot really, I love TF2's HUD, Halo's, Skyrim's, most of the C&C HUDs and so on.

Still there's quite a few I dislike a little like the one from the Fable series and Supreme Commander's but I'd really need to sit down and go through a load of games to remember the bad ones.

Human revolution because part way through the game your HUD gets a bug and you have to go to the cyborg doctor to get it fixed. It's one of the few games I have played were the HUD is a part of the world.

Metro Last Light on Ranger.

Even without Ranger mode its got some really neat stuff I wish more games would do. For example being able to read up on what you're supposed to do next by bringing up a dairy in game and holding a Zippo next to it to provide the necessary light. Or wiping clean your helmet when it gets splattered with rain, blood or mud.

The "quest log" thing especially. It would work in almost every first person game. And shit, it would bring so much more immersion to say, Skyrim for example.
Not to mention, most of the time the only way to know how much ammo you have loaded (besides that quick inventory screen when you press Tab) is by counting the exposed bullets in your magazine. The Redux engine that's coming out is going to have animations dedicated to tilting the gun forward for you to count remaining shots, much like Red Orchestra or the Source mod No More Room in Hell. It's pretty much the only thing Metro was missing, beside maybe a way to count remaining reloads.

Gotta say the PS1 versions of NFS3/4. I love the minimalistic icons and the focused tach.

I thought metroid prime's hud was quite clever when I first started playing it.

Since I'm currently playing Persona 4 I've fallen in love with the battle HUD as it looks like a television screen. Which is funny since you're fighting shadows inside television.

Max Payne 2, keep it simple and still well-stylised. I prefer HUDs small, unless its like the mini-map in battlefield, I like it big cause I can see the detail and more of it. Gives you a massive advantage when you use it.

i liked the design of the minotaur boss health in god of war 1, the idea of having his health bar being armored and it chips of as his armor is broken was brilliant.

I also like TF2 Hud, its small and effective and the best way to sum it up is less is more.

Out of curiosity has anyone ever encountered a terrible hud, i have never really consciously said "This hud sucks" before.

I can't name any specifically, but there have been action/platformers games where the health bar is set too small and in the corner of the screen or is a number on a semi transparent background(gets lost in the BG) so you often die without knowing you were close to death.

I think some early 3D shooters didn't have a crosshair so shooting was made to be guesswork.

I think the Dead Space series has my favourite HUD in any game. It's just really cool how they managed to integrate all the relevant UI functions as parts of the player's suit or in-world holograms rather than having the traditional sort of HUD. There is some fridge logic as a result (like with the stasis meter and oxygen counter being on the user's back, where they can't see them), but a lot of that can probably be explained away. For the most part, it's a very immersive and aesthetically distinct way of doing things.

The HUD in the Elite Dangerous beta is pretty promising right now. Not sure if that's in the genre OP was looking for, but it's pretty sweeeet:

I quite like the HUDs from Kingdom Hearts games, because it changes depending on which world you're in.
It's a neat little touch.

I think Thief 4 and Dishonored got the right idea with customisation, you can go from full on 5 year old mode where you only need to follow the fluorescent lights while the game also keeps repeating which buttons to press for the 15 bloody hours, or you can turn all that shit off individually even down to fading HUD elements.

The other one is a menu system in Divinity: Original Sin, essentially each inventory comes up as it's own window which can be arranged as you wish and interacted with fully, this includes crates/barrels/cupboards that will open tiny boxes and close as you walk away. Also turn based combat game with a hotbar, thank fucking christ someone understand how to incorporate better mechanics in old concepts.

I really like how they integrated the HUD into the RIG(engineering suit/armor) in Dead Space.
It looked nice and was very intuitive, also reduced clutter on-screen.

Oh man! I remember the first time I opened my inventory and such and realized it was projecting into the game world and I could rotate my view around the projections... Amazing. They really pulled it off well for a 3rd person game.
