what game from this console generation makes you say "if your a gamer at all, you must play this game"

would you say something like call of duty because its popular?
or heavy rain because its unique?
or wii sports because it got so many people into gaming?

i would say unreal tournament 3, the reason why is because it has 9 difficulty settings, if your new to shooters it can teach you the controls with super easy bots, if your competent it can be in the middle, and if you can do well against the godlike bots in unreal tournament 3 you can play most online shooters and get a few kills without getting frustrated.

what do you think?

I don't think we can label ourselves to "true gamers" anymore just by one game now.
the definition of gaming has changed so much and some game genre's and type have been added or lost in the past few years, to a degree that there is such a wide range of games available.
So that there are now many people who consider themselves gamers whilst never having played certain games that would make others cry out WHY!?!??!

if any, i'd say there is no game like this, though i wish there was

Yeah, this is really tough to nail down. Gaming has come such a long way since the 80's, that it's nearly impossible to find a single game that appeals to everyone. For instance, 1st person shooters are everywhere now, and probably 2 out of every 5 big releases these days fall in that genre, yet I know gamers who literally get motion sickness watching one get played, probably due to a lack of a central character to focus on. It can be a personal preference that simple to make it a game that THAT particular person will NOT want to play, while everyone else loves it.

I guess in a long-winded way, I'm saying that gaming has branched out so far these days, that there's nothing out there that can appeal to everyone. Except maybe Limbo.

If you're a true gamer you try multiple games across multiple genres. Not necessarily every one, but a bunch.

I'll play some sports games - Baseball and Golf, not so much a fan of Basketball, Hockey, Football or Soccer.

I'll play some FPS games - Arena shooters like UT3 as well as story based ones like Bioshock.

I'll play some platform games - Little Big Planet and Super Mario Galaxy for example.

Now not everyone else will agree with me, but a true gamer will probably have at least one sports, one FPS and one platformer game, among a whole bunch of others that they'll like.

Heavy Rain unique?
Really? It seemed really contrived and uninspired to me... like it could've just as well been made as a choose your path book from the 80s.

While I too think that there isn't any one game for any generation that defines it, I would recommend anyone with a current system play Fallout 3.

I feel like last generation had a lot more various gamer defining titles like San Andreas, Burnout 3, or Katamari.

No game like that, in my opinion - that you have to play if you're a gamer. You play what you want to play. I'm not going to force you to play Mass Effect just because I like it, that's cruel and what school kids try to do (though more often with Call of Duty than ME).

Eh, none really come to mind, but that's more because everyone's tastes can be so radically different. I know plenty of people who hate Mass Effect 2, even though it's one of my favorite games. I also know plenty of people who love all those Kingdom Hearts games, but I just can't stand em. Different strokes for different folks.

Though, if there were one game that came close, I would say Portal. Not the best game this generation, IMO atleast, but it's pretty damn easy to get into, and for a while steam was literally just giving it out for free. Though even for that, there are people that literally can't play First-Person games, so I really don't know.

I think the battle against the concept of being called a true gamer has been chewed and spat out.

There isn't a game that everyone should play. Everyone can play whatever the hell they want. If I must throw something; then let it be, um, Civilization V.

I think if you're a gamer you could have a lot of fun and gain some insight from playing more than one game from each generation of console. I don't mean playing every genre of game because, well, if you hate FPS games, playing the best of the generation still isn't likely to make you an FPS believer and you won't have any fun.

I say, seek out the game that most agreed was "weird", seek out the game that most agreed was the "best selling", try the game that was labeled "the best, awful experience to be put on disc". It's fun to play the hilariously bad games too, after all.

You'll get a tasty sample of many games from the generation of your choosing and a lot of different play experiences.

There isnt a game everyone should play, but the game i would recommend from this generation would be Little Big Planet (and its sequel). The create/play/share thing represents how well online features have been successfully incorporated into gaming in this generation. The fact that the sequel lets you create even more diverse games (puzzle, platformer, shooter, racing game, etc), only makes the choice easier to me, since it can please a wider crowd.

Deadly Premonition
Why? Because it represents everything gaming is about, as well as what it isn't about.

Because it is a true inspiration to see how a game truly has been crafted with love, overlooking things like super-advanced physics or amazing visual quality.
It is an incredible look at how a game can get everything wrong, and yet still get everything right.
It's almost like a recipe for how to make an amazing game, as well as the complete opposite, and judging by these kind of qualities, I think this should stand out and be judged as the experience it is, as well as an example of how a game can be looked at, not by quality, but by what the developer wanted to make and show us.

Also, for the 98% of people who probably believe this was all sarcarsm: It wasn't.

It's gonna be really hard to tell which games can be considered the "ones that defined this console generation" until we're already on to the next one. If I had to take a guess right now... I think Mass Effect will be regarded as one of the best. Also, despite how much we could argue about it's quality, CoD will undoubtedly have left an impact on gaming through this console generation.

Assassin's Creed or one of its sequels. Mainly because they are the unique games of this generation, the "Risk that Paid off" if you will. It could have easily bombed. IMO, it shows people that unique games can still be successful.

Yea. I even tried it with the move and while the controls make more sense with that (even though it?s mostly still QTEs), I still feel like I?m watching a USA Networks made for TV movie. I look at it like a Bioware game, I get why people like it but it?s not what I?m looking for when I play. I get the feeling a lot of devs this generation are thinking that because grownups are playing games, we need to be bored to death. I got that same feeling from gta4.
I can definitely agree with you on Little Big Planet. If you have a ps3, you should have that title. They give it away with controllers now I see. Gotta love the soundtrack too. That?s The Go Team right?
