What game genres do you miss?

I was just thinking while playing dark forces 2 in preparation for the old republic testing weekend, that certain game types don't really feature as heavily any more.

My biggest regrets nowadays are semi serious flight Sim types (tie fighter, x-wing: alliance). Seemingly being to serious for for arcade gamers.

Another i miss is point and click. I know, they are making a resurgence as 'retro classics,' but actual original titles with well placed humor by the bucket load?

Anyone else have any thoughts about what they would like to see return to the fore of gaming?

Proper oldschool JRPGs (either turn based or action based). With none of this automated battle crap.

I'm beginning to wonder if the classic JRPG peaked with Crono trigger/Seiken-Densetsu-3...

I mean, Sands of Destruction was alright, and Radiant Historia isn't bad, but....I haven't played a GREAT JRPG in a while. That might change once I'm able to borrow persona 4 from a friend of mine, though.

I love puzzle platformers, but you don't see a lot of them anymore these days. Recent ones have been Braid, Limbo and Portal, with Portal being the first and only (to my recollection) AAA puzzle platformer. But what I like about them is that you have a world to move around in, but exploration is done almost completely through the mechanics. Couple that with the fact that you need to use your grey matter to solve them and every one of them needs to be creative to be appealing and so you get to try out a variety of experiences.
Mostly, however, I'm limited to playing some really indie stuff if I want a fun puzzle platformer (like Time Fcuk). So I would like there to be some more professional releases for the genre. Which reminds I'm really looking forward to that quantum physics puzzler that's coming out next year.

TURN BASED STRATEGY.

Most particularly tactical turn based strategy, ala X-Com and Jagged Alliance.

2K Marin can go die in a fire, thanks.

I've always wanted to ask someone who's into the genre, how does Fire Emblem hold up in this regard?

They just don't make 'um like they used to...
This is my answer, too. Only one proper survival horror game in recent memory and it's from 2010. =/

Alas, my platform of choice is the PC, and has been for 30 years. I've little to no experience with console TBS.

You might want to pick up a DS, because there were a lot of renowned TBS games on Game Boy Advance and DS. That's where all the classic-style JRPGs went, too.

I hear ya. My favourite strategy games of all time are the Advance Wars games, at least right up until the point that it goes grim and depressing.

Stealth.
Where did you go stealth?
Why did you have to integrate yourself as just a mechanic along other mechanics in a game?
And why is apparently 'noobish' to be stealthy in COD now?

Proper RPGs. Way too few around and far between.
I always wonder what is meant when people say this.

Anyways, more mech games with heavy doses of customization, ala Armored Core.

Building a giant death robot while fretting over power grid management and maximum leg weight...just fun.

Where is my starfighter? I spent hours saving the galaxy when I was a kid. Now all I can do is run around with a shotgun? FOR SHAME!

Also: Where is my Battlemech? Was MW4 the last time I'd ever get to slap four PPCs on a chassis and then blow the shit out of all my cowering foes?

I miss the old LucasArts adventure games. I thoroughly enjoyed Escape from Monkey Island and to this day, Grim Fandango is still one of my favourites.

Racing. and I don't mean 'driving game' I mean you and around 7 or so others driving around a closed coarse at high speeds. No gimmicks, no explosions, no weapons. Just you, your car and your skills. The last game like that to be mainstream is Gran Truismo 5

- Turn based strategy akin to Advanced Wars or Gladius
- Secret of Mana type RPG's
- Card based RPG's like Shandalar for Magic the Gathering or Baten Kaitos.
- RPG Puzzle games such as Puzzle Quest were fantastic

Space trading simulators.
Well, sure, there is EVE...

Also: What genre would Dungeon Keeper and Evil Genius be?
I miss that too.

This! Contrary to the popular belief TBS are way more immersive for me than real time experiences. Even new entries to pinnacles of the genre are coming out in hybrid real time systems. I'm still hanging on for the new JA anyway.

Adventures are still around and having a blast in the hands of indie and smaller companies. I'm pleased to see some are received pretty well. I still miss AAA quality epic adventures though.

I'd like to see a few new Shoot 'em ups out there (a la Strikers 1945 and the like).

There were a couple that appeared on PSN a while back, but those just ended up as nice diversions. Every now and then, I load up Ikaruga on the good 'ol Gamecube and get me some bullet hell action just for the heck of it. I understand it's mostly an arcade thing and I never expected it to be a huge, sweeping genre at all, but still, the lack of them makes me sad inside.

Also, all the people who said Survival Horror. Now that is a style of game that needs a proper resurrection.
